Arts And Crafts: Retrogamer-Style

I know it’s tempting to spend all your spare time gaming – but it’s important to cultivate your creativity and your problem-solving skills, and what better way than with some arts and crafts (just remember how exciting it was when it was time for art class back in school!).

Time For Link To Break His Silence: A Live-Action Zelda Series!

main picIn the biggest video game adaptation news of the moment: Netflix is in the early stages of developing a live-action series based on Zelda – wow! Apparently it is envisioned as Game of Thrones for a family audience.

If the project pans out, it will be a rare example of a Nintendo adaptation – others include the 1989 animated Legend of Zelda series and the disappointing Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993.

Super-Mario-Bros.-MovieIn 2004 there was talk of a Metroid film to be directed by John Woo, but according to the former producer Brad Foxhoven, the project fell through when Nintendo became nervous about handing over control of their characters’ back stories and development to the film’s writers and directors.

metroidIn latest reports, Netflix is seeking a writer for the project. Let’s hope this one gets off the ground and is well received because a successful adaptation could open the door to many more exciting Nintendo-themed films and series.

On a final note, The Verge has some excellent suggestions for a winning cast, including Maisie Williams as young Link and Natalie Dormer as adult Link.

DIY SNES Powered Mini Arcade Machine

Can’t decide whether to play an arcade machine or console? No room for a full size arcade machine? Don’t worry – djkurtz92’s instructables page shows you how to create a cute little bar-top arcade machine powered by a SNES! And apparently his next project will use an original Xbox running MAME with hundreds (Ed: thousands!) of arcade ROMs, very cool.

If you are at all handy, you won’t be able to resist giving this project a go!

There’s A Party In My Pocket And Every Console Is Invited

Free To Play Retro Game Mash-Ups

Mash-ups aren’t anything new, but when you can play them, things start to get quite interesting. Check out this Super Mario site that mashes our favourite video game characters in other games or pop culture scenarios and then allows you to have a go!

All the mash-up games are Flash based and can be played on your Android devices.

The games are quite cute and fun – who wouldn’t like to beat-up Koopas, Lui Kang-style in Mario Combat!

There is also Tuper Tario Tros – a Super Mario Bros. and Tetris mash-up where you use your tetraminos to build a safe path across the level.

And who wouldn’t like to have Sonic speeding through Mario’s familiar landscape in Sonic Super Marioland – I guess Dr Robotnik has kidnapped Amy Rose.

There are many more strange and wonderful knock-off Super Mario games, from the fun Super Mario Truck Driver to Super Mario Space Shuttle with the awesome Can’t Touch This soundtrack!
