Bee Simulator – Nintendo Switch Review

December 24, 2019 By Mat Panek

Time to get busy as a bee in Bee Simulator from VARSAV Game Studios, out now on the Nintendo Switch.

If you have ever wondered about the life of bees and insects then Bee Simulator is the game you have been waiting for! Players take the role of a new worker bee as you try to save your hive and prepare for winter by exploring a vast level inspired by New York’s Central Park. As a bee players will collect pollen, race other bees, fight deadly wasps and communicate with other bees using sweet dance moves. Various actions, such as returning pollen to the hive, are rewarded with knowledge points which can be redeemed for alternate Bee skins, fancy hats and colourful trails. Apart from the single player story mode there is also a split screen mode where both players can compete against each other or just take in the sights and collect pollen.

On the Nintendo Switch, Bee Simulator is a very simple game graphically and looking too closely makes it feel a bit like a clockwork world. Taking a step back and enjoying the games simplicity gives it an almost childlike appeal though, making everything seem very charming and full of whimsy. Despite the limitations of the switch, it is all very beautiful, especially on some of the multiplayer maps. Wildlife litters the landscape and flowers are abundant and naturally spread around. There is a great scale to everything and Bee Simulator really makes the player feel small but in no way helpless.

Controls are a little touchy but fairly minimal which makes Bee Simulator a great game for new players to just pick up and take in the sights of a bee’s unseen world. Multiplayer is plenty of fun and a relaxing way to spend some time, we spent ages just exploring and poking at the world. Sometimes even literally by stinging the odd passerby! While more serious gamers might get a bit bored in co-op, casual players and couples will enjoy buzzing around the different locations and discovering lots of wonderful little details.

Bee Simulator is a whole lot of fun on your own or with a friend, regardless of if you enjoy completing every story and side mission or just stinging picnic goers and popping balloons. A mellow and relaxed experience full of interesting bee facts and information that makes it a great game for players of any age.

Stern Pinball Unveils STRANGER THINGS Pinball! It’s Bitchin’

December 24, 2019 By ausretrogamer

Stern Pinball Inc. announced today their new line of pinball machines celebrating the iconic Netflix series, Stranger Things!

Stranger Things is the comeback game for one of our favourite pinball designers of all time, Brian Eddy. Brian joined Stern Pinball in 2017 after being out of the pinball design game for a couple of decades. Brian is best known for two of the greatest machines of all time, Medieval Madness and Attack From Mars. With that kind of design pedigree, the excitement is quite high for his debut Stern title.

Well, from what we have seen of the three editions (Pro, Premium and Limited Edition), we reckon Brian has given us something magical – mind you, we haven’t played it yet, so once we do, we’ll give you our opinion.

source: Stern Pinball Inc.

Experience the terrifying forces in Hawkins, Indiana that turn this small town “upside down” with supernatural elements, strange sightings, and government secrets. Stranger Things pinball machines will immerse players in a search to unravel the extraordinary mysteries and secret government experiments taking place at the Hawkins National Laboratory. The gameplay focuses on unlocking the hidden meanings of supernatural events occurring in and around the town, including the appearance of a girl known as “Eleven” with telekinetic abilities. The ball is wild as Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Will, Joyce, and Police Chief Jim Hopper help Eleven close the dimensional gate.

The Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition models all feature distinct hand-drawn art in addition to the custom sculpted, interactive Demogorgon bash toy, guarded by drop targets and a rotating ramp. All models include two hideout ball scoops, a Demodog spinner, three custom ramps, and game rules that will transport players into the Upside Down.

The Premium and Limited Edition models feature a first ever video projector that displays images and animations directly on the playfield, creating dramatic interactions with gameplay action. The center of the playfield features a unique ramp that doubles as a screen and leads the player into a direct battle with the Demogorgon. These models also feature a new Eleven themed “telekinetic” magnetic ball lock.

As mentioned already, we’ll let you know what we think of Stranger Things pinball once we flip it – so stay tuned!

Custom Mario Sunshine GameCube

December 20, 2019 By ausretrogamer

CustomMarioGCN_HDRWe love receiving emails from modders out there to show us their customisation work.

We received an email from Dorison Hugo (aka: @lyberty5 on Twitter) who tinkered with his purple GameCube to make it look like as if Mario was trapped inside the console. Dorison explains that this was a cosmetic mod, which still needed a bit of tinkering to get it done – like freeing up the space, in which he had to move the fan onto the other side of the case. Also, he had to drill small holes to allow air intake near the Mario figurine to ensure the console would not overheat.

This is a fairly simple and cheap-ish mod, with the window frame and Mario being made out of cheap water-based clay. Dorison has shown ingenuity throughout this customisation, including the use of cotton tips (Q-tips) acting as the prison bars. Dorison’s aim was to show that no real (and expensive) equipment was needed for a simple mod.

Have you customised your consoles? If you have, we’d love to check them out – hit us up on Twitter or Facebook!

Project D – F1 Spirit

December 19, 2019 By ausretrogamer

If you thought the contemporary F1 Spirit video game, a remake of the classic MSX title by Konami, was awesome, wait till you play Retro Reloader’s Project D – F1 Spirit, a tweaked version of Brain Games‘ remake with Initial D arcade style elements, from the music, sound effects, to the enemies, graphics and menu.

Go and burn some rubber, drift or blast a berm in Project D – F1 Spirit!

Star Wars Pin: The Force Is Strong In This One!

December 18, 2019 By ausretrogamer

We recently visited our friends at Zax Amusements to wish them all the best for the Festive Season and while we were there we got to play Stern’s Star Wars Pin. In case you weren’t aware, this is the ‘home’ edition of Stern’s popular Star Wars commercial pinball machines.

Don’t let the ‘home’ moniker fool you, this machine shares a lot of DNA with its bigger brother, like the Spike operational system architecture, flipper, drop targets, slingshots and pop bumper sub-assemblies. Not only that, the playfield dimensions are also identical! The best part of this machine is its price, at AU$6,850 it is almost $2,500 cheaper than the entry level Star Wars Pro model. So for those budget conscious pinball fans that are into Star Wars and don’t want the complex maintenance, this machine may be for you.

So how does it play? Well, since it’s a George Gomez designed game, it of course shoots darn well! All of the 11-shots (in a fan layout) feel great when nailed, some being easier than others, which makes it great for all skill levels. What we loved most about this machine was its flow and ease of understanding in how to progress through the game, including getting to the timed wizard mode called Jedi Multiball. The implementation of sounds and iconic dialogue from the original Star Wars trilogy also add to the overall experience and theme immersion. Nothing is ever perfect in this world, so our main gripe was the small screen as we struggled to view the videos when looking up quickly while playing, meaning we missed our shot and drained our ball. Apart from this niggle, we felt that there was enough on the playfield to shoot at, from drop targets, a spinner that sounds awesome when hit and the two ramps, to keep us coming back for one more go – we were hooked by the FORCE.

For those that love easy to understand rules and objectives, this machine keeps things fairly simple – hit the F-O-R-C-E target on the left side of the playfield to light up each letter. Once FORCE is all complete, the Rebels (Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker) are then lit, which you then shoot one (for example Luke Skywalker) and proceed to complete the designated shots for that character. Once all Rebel characters are completed (including R2-D2), the timed wizard mode Jedi Multiball begins, with the objective being to rescue Luke, Princess Leia and Han Solo by shooting the lit shots before time runs out – pretty straight forward if you manage to not lose that elusive silverball.

With four multiballs, including the aforementioned timed wizard mode Jedi Multiball, super jackpots, timed double scoring, bonus mutlipliers and the clever R2-D2 ball lock (which you can use to start or steal your opponents locked ball for the R2-D2 mutliball) , there is enough depth in the game to have you playing over and over again. Without a doubt, one of our fave and most satisfying objectives and shot (apart from ripping the blaster spinner) is destroying the Death Star – the light show, video and sound are choreographed perfectly, making you feel like you had a hand in the Rebels bringing down the Empire.

This game really surprised us. We love pinball, so we were sceptical at first since this machine is targeted for the home. But once we started flipping it, all that scepticism went away. The total package does look and feel good, from the art, sound, sound effects to the video (even though the screen is on the small side) and general playfield, we felt like we were in the original Star Wars universe. If you are interested in Stern’s Star Wars Pin, you can contact the folks at Zax Amusements today to have a flip and see if it is for you. However, if after playing it you feel that this machine is not to your liking, then then check out the commercial-grade Star Wars Comic edition.

The Force is definitely strong in this Pin!

GENSOU Skydrift – Nintendo Switch Review

December 17, 2019 By Mat Panek

Time to fly into the magical world of GENSOU Skydrift, out now on the Nintendo Switch from the team at illuCalab.

GENSOU Skydrift is a Touhou Project racing game set in Gensokyo, located somewhere in japan where the world of humans and yokai (spirits) meet. No prior knowledge of the Touhou universe is required to enjoy the game but it also probably doesn’t hurt. Players choose two characters to use, each with different stats and abilities, where one acts as the rider and the other becomes the board. While racing it is possible to switch between the two to maximise each characters strong points such as offense, speed and cornering. Each track is littered with magical boost gates that will propel players along but also charge up your spell meter that, once full, will allow players to randomly claim a spell card to use. Spells are either offensive, defensive or boosts but each player also has a special and devastating “Last word” ability unique to them.

Controls are simple and easy enough to pick up but are only displayed briefly in the campaign tutorial, there are no other real reminders such as if you jump into a versus match without prior knowledge. The controls are easily figured out though by just mashing the buttons as you race and hoping for the best. Players can tightly turn or drift around corners depending on their playstyle and character selection. The whole vibe of Gensou Skydrift is very cheery and extremely Japanese with lots of visual novel style over the top moments in the campaign. Courses are diverse and interesting, ranging from human villages to magical sakura trees either being a looping track or a start to finish sprint. In every mode apart from online there is some serious AI “rubber-banding” going on to keep things lively, so no need to feel discouraged if you fall behind but also a good reason to not get too confident while in the lead.

Feeling like an extremely colourful and cheery Kart racing game, Gensou Skydrift has some very obvious nods towards more established games in the Kart racing genre but still keeps things fresh enough. An interesting alternative for those in the market for another quick kart racing game or fans of the Touhou franchise but probably not for everyone.

The Eyes Of Ara – Nintendo Switch Review

December 12, 2019 By Mat Panek

Prepare to unravel the mysteries that lie waiting for you in The Eyes of Ara out now on the Nintendo Switch from 100 Stones Interactive.

The Eyes of Ara is an adventure puzzle game that has players investigating a mysterious signal that is coming from an old weathered castle sitting atop an isolated island. Up until recently the castle has laid dormant with only folk tales remaining of its origins and ghost stories surrounding its former occupants. Arriving by boat, players start to explore the castle room by room in an attempt to uncover the secrets of this mysterious location. Apart from the amazingly intricate main story puzzles there are countless other minor puzzles, hidden passages and collectables for those with a keen eye to uncover.

The Eyes of Ara takes us back to the classics such as Myst and Riven, giving players a real sense of wonder and discovery. Just like those classics, there is an oppressive sense of isolation and confinement that gives the game a fantastic atmosphere. Environmental storytelling is fantastic and plays a key role, giving the player lots of backstory and minute details to look over, journals or notes to read and riddles to solve. Every nook and cranny has something to look at or discover, the whole castle feels very lived in and believable. Going into the world and its story any more would ruin the sense of discovery surrounding every fiber of this game.

Control on the Nintendo switch is done with only a single Joycon or via the touch screen in handheld mode which is fine but never our personal choice on the console. User interface is simple and gets out of the way of the rest of the game, being easily hidden and recalled only when needed which is superb. Every puzzle involves solving and manipulating puzzles in a very natural and tactile way that has you moving, twisting or rotating objects that is fun and rewarding. Even objects that cannot be directly interacted with will give a knock or puff of dust when clicked on, making the world feel fully immersive.

Full of elaborate and devious puzzles, The Eyes of Ara is absolutely for fans of the classic adventures games or lovers of fiendishly clever puzzles. An amazing feat for a one man game studio and a game that firmly asserts itself as a must play title, regardless of platform.
