It’s On Like Donkey Kong – DK turns 45!

On this day (July 9) in 1981, Nintendo unleashed Donkey Kong in the arcades! Ah, the golden age of arcades!

Since then, millions of gamers have fallen in love with the great Nintendo gorilla. DK (as he is affectionately known) has gone from being the villain to now being the hero.

From humble beginnings, kidnapping Pauline and throwing barrels at a moustachioed plumber, DK has come a long way and truly grown up. He has definitely kept us all entertained. Happy 45th Birthday big fella!

‘Rampage’ Arcade Game

When I played “Rampage” as a kid, it was on a small screen, and I often found all the destruction at times boring. I never liked “Rampage” all that much on my NES; I’d rather play “Double Dragon 2” or “Metroid.” But playing “Rampage” on an enormous screen in an arcade is something different all together. It felt like a totally different game to me.

I only played the “Rampage” arcade game because I couldn’t get on a fun bowling game that I’m somewhat good at. When I’m smashing buildings and vehicles, there’s something liberating and thrilling about it. The screen is so huge, it feels like you’re submerged in the ultra-violent game. It’s all fun until the choppers show up and counter your destruction of the city. When I’m into the game, I usually ignore anyone who’s firing at me when I’m George, Lizzie, or Ralph. Destruction of vehicles and structures is my focus before my time runs out. I like to play as George the most.

 

I don’t like eating people on the street, I never have. It’s sinister and creepy to me. I enjoy crushing cars and punching helicopters as they whiz past my head. There’s a feeling of accomplishment when a tall skyscraper topples to the pavement. The destruction is the point of the classic game, so when I destroy, it’s thrilling for a moment.

“Rampage” is a little repetitive, but the arcade game’s visuals are so enthralling you forget about it as you progress to a new level.

I’ve never watched the Warner Bros. movie with The Rock. I’ve heard it’s not that bad, but I’m not sure how you make a good film out of a game where you’re just smashing and demolishing things. But I’m sure the CGI effects were decent.

Roll Out! Stern’s Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye Pinball Machine Is an ’80s Fan’s Dream Come True

Stern Pinball has officially “rolled out” its latest cornerstone release, and it’s one that will hit Aussie retro gamers square in the nostalgia core – Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye. Announced on May 20, 2026, the new machine brings the iconic Autobot vs Decepticon war to life under glass, blending classic ‘80s vibes with Stern’s latest pinball tech.

Back to Cybertron (and the ’80s)

Unlike Stern’s earlier Transformers table (which leaned into the Michael Bay films), this new release proudly taps into the original 1984 animated series and The Transformers: The Movie. That means familiar story arcs, authentic video clips, and a heavy dose of Gen 1 flavour woven directly into gameplay.

Players step into the role of the Autobots, teaming up with Optimus Prime to stop Megatron from harvesting Earth’s energy, conquering Cybertron, and ultimately dominating the universe – classic Saturday morning stakes, now played out through silverball action.

More Than Meets the Eye… Literally

Back to the Future: Classic Gaming at PAX Aus 2025

Old-School Was Cool at PAX Aus 2025 🎮✨

We saved the best of PAX Aus 2025 till last 😉 Because as much as we love the new, shiny, RGB-filled world of gaming, our hearts will always belong to the pixel-packed past. The Classic Gaming area once again felt like coming home – a warm hug of CRT glow, joystick clicks, and the unmistakable chime of 8-bit magic.

Every corner was a trip down memory lane: old-school computers, consoles, handhelds, and pinball machines all humming in harmony. There’s just something about playing retro games on their original hardware – the tactile clunk of inserting a cartridge, the flicker of a cathode ray screen, the rush (and rage!) of losing your last life. No emulator can replicate that kind of nostalgia.

And those display cabinets? Chef’s kiss. They were packed with rare and droolworthy treasures, including the ultra-obscure Apple/Bandai PiPP!n ATMARK dev unit and PiPP!n @World, plus the Sharp Famicom Titler AN-510 and the elusive Sharp FamicomStation (aka Famicombox). Retro hardware heaven!

Of course, the silverball scene was just as strong, featuring pinball machines that just landed on Aussie shores – like Pinball Brothers’ Predator and Jersey Jack Pinball’s magical Harry Potter. Picking a favourite was near impossible, but as lifelong ‘80s Arnie fans, Predator definitely got our thumbs-up, with Labyrinth and Dune hot on its heels.

There’s truly nothing like the Classic Gaming area at PAX Aus — it’s where the roots of gaming are celebrated, preserved, and most importantly, played. Here’s hoping it returns in 2026 to remind us once again why the classics never die.

Review: Irem Collection Volume 3 (Xbox) – Blast from the Pixelated Past

If you’re a fan of side-scrolling shoot ‘em ups and wild retro weirdness, Irem Collection Volume 3 from ININ Games is like opening a time capsule filled with pixelated power-ups, dragons, and the kind of creative enemy design only the ’80s and ’90s could conjure. This lovingly compiled collection brings together three of Irem’s most eccentric and thrilling shooters: Mr. Heli/Battle Chopper, Mystic Riders, and Dragon Breed. And trust me—you’re in for a ride that’s as bizarre as it is brilliant.

🚁 Mr. Heli / Battle Chopper (Arcade & PC Engine)

A Classic Is Reborn – The Atari 7800+

Play Like It’s 1986!

Just in case you have been away on Mars or off grid somewhere on Earth, you may have missed the news that (the new) Atari are at it again, mining their legacy IP to create a contemporary product that tugs on retro gamers’ hearts!

This time around, it’s the Atari 7800+, which is based (on looks) on the 7800 console that was released in 1986. The beauty about the 7800 was that it could play both original VCS/2600 and native 7800 game cartridges, and thank heavens, the 7800+ will be able to do the same. However, the 7800+ will have an added advantage by being able to play the newer 2600+ and 7800+ carts as well – how cool is that?!

So fetch your old 2600 and 7800 game carts and get them ready for some action!
