Sneak Peek At Atari’s New Gameband Smartwatch

February 7, 2017 By ausretrogamer

Last week we reported on the imminent new Atari hardware, and now we can tell you a tad more. With just 3 days to go till the official Gameband Kickstarter launch (1:00am February 9th AEDT), some teaser sneak peek photos have emerged of the Gameband Atari and Terraria Edition smartwatches.

As can be seen in the photos (from left to right); there’ll be a straight Gameband Edition (Black, sleek and shiny), an Atari Edition (red, black and retro) and a Terraria Edition (brown, green and indie). Apparently there will be a super early bird price on Kickstarter (starting at $99USD) for a limited quantity – too bad the Kickstarter will launch at the ungodly hour of 1:00am our time :-/

According to Gameband’s CEO, Feargal Mac Conuladh, the Gameband Smartwatches will be “An insanely powerful Smartwatch, wrapped in gaming design and content.”. We shall see!

We reached out to Feargal to state that the launch was going to be at 1:00am on February 9 (our time), meaning a lot of Australians would miss out on the early bird special. He responded thusly:

@ausretrogamer you telling me gamers down-under are in bed by 1am? 😉

— Feargal Mac Conuladh (@feargalmac) February 7, 2017

It’s always good to see a CEO having a sense of humour!

February 6, 2017 By ausretrogamer

Video pinball has come a long, long way and Arcooda is leading the way with their innovative and advanced Arcooda Video Pinball machine.

Hot on the heels of their partnership with FarSight Studios (makers of The Pinball Arcade), Arcooda has just announced that it has partnered with Barnstorm Games Limited, to release Timeshock! – The Arcade Edition, an advanced video pinball cabinet version of the popular and realistic Pro Pinball:Timeshock! game.

If you remember the Pro Pinball series, then you’ll no doubt have fond memories of Timeshock!, one of just four video pinball tables released in the series between 1995 and 1999. With advanced pinball physics, a brand new lighting engine and photo realistic graphics at spectacular resolutions, Timeshock! – The Arcade Edition will take pinball simulation to heights never before seen on a full sized video pinball machine.

Working with Arcooda, Barnstorm Games will add many new features suitable for full cabinet support including multi backglass display, multi colour DMD, real pinball parts support including: pinball coils, plunger, shaker motors, advanced tournament feature and much more.

To say we can’t wait to get flippin’ on the Arcooda Video Pinball machine would be a massive understatement!

Sydney Game Developers Jam Together

February 6, 2017 By ausretrogamer

How long does it take to create a video game? According to the trail blazers at the Global Games Jam, just 48 hours – all in the spirit of good fun of course!

The flagship event of the 2017 TAFE Open Week saw 183 game developers converge on the North Sydney campus for the Global Games Jam. Global Games Jam is an annual international event in which competitors from around the globe are given a theme to create a fully playable game in just 48 hours. 2017’s event saw over 36,000 jammers in 702 sites across 95 countries create over 7,000 games in just one weekend!

Artists, musicians, coders, designers, writers, producers and more spent a hectic sleepless weekend creating games inspired by the deceptively simple theme of “waves“, with matters being complicated by our list of optional diversifiers. The games that emerged at the end of the weekend took the theme in many directions, some very literal and others more esoteric. We had ocean waves, sound waves, Mexican waves, enemies attacking in waves, players communicating by waving their hands, and so much more.

“Global Games Jam offers both TAFE North Sydney students and the wider Sydney gaming community the chance to come together and share their love and passion for gaming.” says Daniel Hale, Game Development Course Coordinator at TAFE North Sydney.

Having competed in every Games Jam since January 2015, Ray Frihy and Memia Lin are certified Games Jam veterans – at just 18 years of age! Both began their studies at TAFE North Sydney at 16, completing the Diploma of Interactive Games and are now currently completing an Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media.

For them, Games Jam has been instrumental in developing their technical skills for game development, as well as giving them the real-world experience of working towards deadlines and collaborating as a team – essential skills necessary to succeed in the highly competitive gaming industry. This sentiment is echoed by their teacher Daniel Hale; “Ray and Menia are both great examples of the budding talent we are seeing at TAFE North Sydney. Games Jam offers them and others students the chance to meet directly with industry professionals and demonstrate their amazing talent, we believe it is really important to nurture talent and provide them with the skills necessary for a successful career in games development.”

Now in it’s third year, TAFE’s Global Games Jam saw the cream of Sydney’s video game development crop come together as a community to share their knowledge and passion for gaming. A fantastic live stream hosted by Bajo (Steven O’Donnell from ABC’s Good Game) led to the reveal of the “waves” theme after a keynote video created by the team at Extra Credits. This led to a frenzy of creation, which didn’t stop at the weekend. Many games developed in previous Game Jams have become fully realised games. The Global Game Jam is open source, hardware and software agnostic and all projects are protected under a Creative Commons license. Some standout mentions from this year included:

Wave Breaker – A tsunami survival game with a bizarre Nicholas Cage Easter egg.

CYCLONE_RYDER.EXE – A wave pattern maze game that is deceptively difficult.

Electric Surfaloo – A surfing themed game which pits Broseidon against an onslaught of beach goers.

That’s My Queen – A truly unique and entertaining concept that requires you to make the correct hand gestures to your kingdom’s subjects as you pass by in your car.

For a full list of games created and participant lists follow the link to the official Games Jam site here.

Timezone Plans Expansion: Bringing Back The Arcade Parlour

February 3, 2017 By ausretrogamer

Pew pew, remember chucking coins in arcade machines and having a blast at your local Timezone? We do. Then came the PlayStation and Xbox era, and everyone decided to get their gaming entertainment at home.

Well, time has come where people are again seeking gaming entertainment outside of the home. With this demand, Timezone’s announcement that they will be expanding their amusement centre network in Australia is absolutely perfect timing.

We have always loved visiting Timezone centres around Melbourne and also on the Gold Coast, so this expansion news is great for all those seeking some great child and adult-friendly gaming entertainment. It’s going to feel like the ’80s and ’90s once again. Go Timezone!

Jump in one of the Ferraris!

Yours truly enjoying some After Burner Climax!

Yahoo! Mario Kart 2!

Let’s get shoot’n

Oh man, can’t wait for some head-to-head Daytona USA action!

We love flippin’ at Timezone!

Movieland Arcade: A Hit Of Nostalgia In Vancouver

February 2, 2017 By ausretrogamer

Ah Vancouver, the city of many cruise ships and retirees boarding these massive vessels! This post has been a long time coming, but that’s because we’ve been distracted – till now!

Continuing on with cool places we visited while on our North American trip (like the Seattle Pinball Museum, Toy Shack and A Gamer’s Paradise in Vegas), the city of Vancouver delivered its own piece of gaming nostalgia via the Movieland Arcade!

There are some amusement centres that are stuck in a bygone era, a period of time when arcade parlours in the 80s were lined with machines, both of the arcade and pinball kind, checkered linoleum flooring, cheeky signage, an attendants booth for exchanging your notes for coins and of course, the smell. Well, it is safe to say that Movieland Arcade encapsulates this 80s era perfectly.

Situated at the hipster end of Granville Street in central Vancouver, Movieland Arcade cannot be missed – its distinct red tile facade enticing you to go in and experience some real gaming nostalgia. With pinball tables and arcade machines ranging from the 70s to the late 90s, you better exchange your notes for a shed-load of coins as you will want to play them all!

Movieland Arcade reminded us of the arcade joints we used to frequent in the 80s on Swanston Street and Russell Street in the centre of Melbourne. Unlike those arcade joints going the way of the dodo, Vancouver can count itself lucky with a place like the Movieland Arcade.

Whoa, we spot Movieland Arcade across the road!

You definitely can’t miss the distinct facade of this majestic arcade parlour

We better grab some more coins!

Here we go! Hmm, pinball or straight to the arcade machines?

We shall start from the left and work our way to the right..

You have to go slow when you are in here! Too many awesome distractions!

We can’t go past some Neo Geo action

Killer Instinct is next!

Whoa man, haven’t seen a Gauntlet Legends machine in almost 20 years!

Some single racing action on Daytona USA!

Inserting coins now!

Nothing beats some 8P head-to-head racing!

We spy Medieval Madness! Time to destroy some castle!

Needing some gun action, which Area 51 will satisfy

We enjoy gunning down zombies!

Hmm, not sure if these ‘movies’ and that ‘theatre’ are appropriate, but…

OMG, Raiden Fighters! There go all of our coins!

Our shmup senses have gone into overdrive! Get us some more coins!

We spent our last few coins on some Playboy action *wink*

Darn it, the booth attendant must’ve had a toilet break. We’ll be back.

Gone Retro Hunting

February 1, 2017 By ausretrogamer

What does one do on a lazy Sunday afternoon? They go hunting for some old school classic gear at the local vintage market in Brunswick East.

After a few goes on the Daytona USA and Tazmi’s TX-1 arcade machines, we got hunting. So, what did we find you may ask? Take a gander below…

Here we go!

One always starts their hunting by playing some Daytona USA

Then one must take it back a notch to playing the three-screen marvel, TX-1

Wish we could take this one home!

Cockpit is a bit worse for wear, but it’s still functional

Once we exhaust our coins, we get hunting. This is a pretty good start!

Now that is one cool framed movie poster!

The singing budgerigar – with a giant poster inside! Whoa!

Who you gonna call?

We wonder if we’ll see a The Last Jedi cup in the near future…

Master System games under $15! That is unheard of! *smiles*

Lights, camera, action!

The menacing King Kong Bundy!

Not the VHS tape we were looking for…

Skateboard anyone? Tony Hawk would be proud.

Liberace would’ve loved this phone!

A Fisher Price record player! No way!

Forget the Fisher Price record play, this is what you should play your vinyl on!

Those eyes!!!

Game of Nightmare, anyone?

G.I. Joe! Hang on, Sloth from The Goonies! *mind blown*

Duck Monster? Nah, that’s a P!

Meet The Jetsons Pinball Machine!

January 31, 2017 By ausretrogamer

Meet George Jetson, his boy Elroy, daughter Judy, Jane, his wife! We loved The Jetsons cartoon, so when The Pinball Company and Spooky Pinball announced The Jetsons Pinball Machine, our collective interest was piqued!

Designed by Dan and Nathan Goett, with stunning art by Jon Chad, coupled with sounds and music from the classic TV show, The Jetsons pinball machine will be one cool flippin’ experience! The LED lighting and the full colour 15″ LCD dot-matrix system will give your peepers something pretty cool to stare at! According to The Pinball Company and Spooky Pinball, the rule-set of this full featured pinball machine will be action packed and easy to learn for the whole family.

The Jetsons pinball machine will begin shipping in late March, with a production run limited to 300 units, making this an instant collectable pinball table. If you are in North America and pre-order one now, you will save $1,000USD. We still await on news regarding The Jetsons pinball machine coming to Australia.

Woohoo, it’s The Jetsons!

Love the vibrant artwork

The art is so cheery, it takes us back to our childhood

The playfield looks a bit sparse, but we’ll reserve judgement till we have a go!

No old school plunger here!

The devil is in the (art) detail

Oh yeah, Little Dipper School!

Jet Again!

Elroy, Judy and our fave canine, Astro, are all there!

The multi-ball cast!

The Flyer!
