The Oregon Trail: The Story of a Classic Computer Game

The origin story of The Oregon Trail game dates to a long, long time ago when three teachers created this legendary game. Bill Heinemann, Don Rawitsch, and Paul Dillenberger in 1971 created this game to teach kids about the 19th-century pioneer. 

After this game was created, it got famous because of its interesting concept and easy-to-understand interface. Kids who grew up between in the ’70s and ’80s know how popular this iconic computer game is. 

Many people think that this game is long forgotten and dead. But that’s not true because it’s popular among young players even today. To keep the gaming audience intact, this game has seen quite a few revisions that have only made it better.

Why Do People Love This Game?

Did you know that The Oregon Trail game online has been released on multiple platforms by multiple game makers who acquired the rights? But the main essence of this game hasn’t been adulterated. It remains the same, which is the prime reason behind its popularity. 

Below are three ways in which this game depicts the life of 19th-century travellers. 

Death

One of the main themes of The Oregon Trail is death. And dying in the game is kind of fun. Wondering why we are saying that? Because people of a party might suddenly fall ill and die.

Most of the time, the cause of death was a simple broken leg or drowning while crossing a river. But people in the game have also died due to cholera, measles, typhoid, exhaustion, dysentery, and snakebite. 

Besides people, the death of animals due to illness, mainly oxen, was quite common. If the members of a party want, they could even organise a funeral for the people who have died and then move ahead on the trail. 

Hunting

The next interesting aspect is hunting, which kept almost all the players hooked to the Oregon Trail game online free. For hunting, players would require pixelated guns that they can purchase at the beginning or during the game. 

During the game, you can get different hunting options. Also, you can hunt a variety of wild animals, which includes squirrels, deer, rabbits, elk, bison, and bears.

When this game was initially released, it didn’t have advanced graphics. Also, to kill an animal, players would have to type “POW,” “WHAM,” or “BANG.” Whether you make a successful hunt or not depends on how quickly you can type the letters. And if there was a spelling error, you might miss the target. 

After that, the game got updated, including a little man who could shoot in eight different directions at the fast-moving animals. And the most recent version made it possible for players to hunt using crosshairs, which could be controlled using a mouse. 

Players mostly targeted bison because they were the slowest moving animals, but they offered the most weight in the food. Next are the squirrels that moved fast but gave very small weight to the food. 

Now the thing is, even if a player killed a large animal, they could only carry 100 lbs in their wagon. It was done to give a real-like feel to the game players. 

Scoring 

The third interesting aspect of The Oregon Trail game original was the scoring. Players would get a score at the end of the game. The awarded score depends on a few factors like remaining possessions, survivors, cash, and the profession that players have selected at the beginning. 

Different professionals offered different points. For instance, the given points would double if you have selected a carpenter. And tripled if you have selected a farmer. But if you have selected a banker, you won’t get any bonus. 

Why Was the Oregon Trail Established Originally?

The original Oregon Trail was established due to the following: 

Mining 

Mining made the Oregon Trail famous because travellers moved south of Oregon during the California Gold Rush to make money. While moving, they followed the route once used in the Oregon Trail between 1848 and 1855. 

Fur Trading

Fur trading was another reason that led to the establishment of the Oregon Trail. Wondering how? During the 1940s, fur trading became the primary source of income for the people of Canada, the U.S., and the Pacific Western area. 

Why Was the Oregon Trail Difficult? 

While the game was fun, the real Oregon Trail was difficult. This difficulty came mainly due to three factors: pestilence, war and the harsh natural environment. 

Pioneers faced difficulty finding clean water, and many had to resort to drinking dirty water, resulting in dysentery and death. Water-borne diseases such as cholera and smallpox also affected the masses. The conditions were only worsened by the bad weather. 

In the final years of the trail’s use, conflicts between the pioneers and natives became common. This made moving westward using the Oregon Trail more challenging than ever before. 

Traversing the Oregon Trail was no easy feat – but the game makes it all fun and games for the sake of entertainment. 

Conclusion

The cartoonish and silly parts of the game, like death by dysentery, will seem funnier now that you understand the realities of the Oregon Trail and the story of how the game came to be.

What A Japanese Arcade From The 1970s Looked Like

We love finding old raw footage from the golden age of arcade gaming. This time, it is from a Tokyo arcade parlour from 1979.

As we wind back the clock some 40+ years, this news story features Tokyo’s arcade parlour, World Game, as it stood in 1979! It is so awesome to see patrons pumping coins into arcade machines, like Space Invaders, just like we did all those years ago!

Space Invaders Invincible Collection – Review (Switch)

The granddaddy of all of shoot’em ups, the legendary Space Invaders has come blasting to the west onto the Nintendo Switch (and PS4), so let’s take a trip down memory lane!

In celebration of the iconic arcade game by Taito, the Space Invaders Invincible Collection packs 11 games based around Tomohiro Nishikado’s shooter that kicked off the arcade golden age 40+ years ago. Before we go on, we better let you know which games made the cut in this collection – they are:

  • Space Invaders (1978, Arcade) – original black and white arcade game
  • Space Invaders (1978, Arcade) – original colour  arcade game
  • Space Invaders Part II (1979, Arcade)
  • Lunar Rescue (1979, Arcade)
  • Space Cyclone (1980, Arcade)
  • Majestic Twelve: The Space Invaders Part IV aka: Super Space Invaders ’91 (1990, Arcade)
  • Super Space Invaders ’91 (1990, Arcade)
  • Space Invaders DX (1994, Arcade)
  • Space Invaders Extreme (2018)
  • Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE (2018)
  • Arkanoid vs Space Invaders (2016) – included as an additional download (not available at the time of this review!)

We were a bit puzzled with Majestic Twelve: The Space Invaders Part IV, as it is the same game as Super Space Invaders ’91. Also, the inclusion of Lunar Rescue and Space Cyclone, both based on the Space Invaders arcade hardware, are an odd addition, but they are a welcome distraction from your standard Space Invaders action, even if they bear some resemblance to the classic shooter.

The vertically oriented Space Invaders games all have the option to rotate the Switch screen to Tate mode, which is a relief, as the screen is quite limited in landscape mode on those earlier arcade titles. Other features include scan lines (on the pre-2xxx games) to give you that authentic arcade monitor glow and feel, and a welcome option is the save / load, which is great if you get interrupted and want to save and come back to start where you left off.

The pre-2000 Space Invaders games (except Super Space Invaders ’91 for some reason) have two modes of play – normal, which is your standard rules arcade game; or challenge mode, which the player competes for the highest score with special rules for each game. After you have a game or two in normal mode, it is the challenge mode that will keep you coming back for more Space Invaders action. Being high score chasers ourselves, we love the challenge mode.

The conversions of all included titles are faithful to their originals, so we can’t fault the visuals, sounds or play mechanics, if you have played any of these games before, then you will feel right at home playing them on the Switch.

Space Invaders is an iconic game that is still fun for a blast 43 years after it debut in the arcades. This Invincible Collection on the Switch packs quite a few of the arcade games with a number of variations which are a lot of fun, especially Space Invaders Extreme, but the high entry cost (AU$99.99) to play Space Invaders and its variants on your Switch is a tad too steep. If you don’t have Space Invaders Forever and you are a hardcore Space Invaders fan, then this is the definitive collection to have, so grab it right away. For those of you that are on the fence, you may want to wait for a price drop to make this a compelling addition to your Switch games library.

ABC News – This Day Tonight: Pinball Parlours (1976)

We absolutely love archival footage from television broadcasters, especially footage from amusement centres (or as we used to call them, parlours) from back in the day!

The below video is from the popular segment on ABC News’ ‘This Day Tonight’, with this particular occasion focusing on Pinball Parlours in Australia in the mid 70s. This is very intriguing with some very enlightening discussions with Malcolm Steinberg (from Leisure & Allied Industries (LAI) and Timezone fame) about video gaming and pinball entertainment that are apt to this day.

So, how much did you spend on gaming back in the day? In 1976 a player might’ve spent as much as $5 (approx. $35 in today’s money) on amusement machines!

Arcade Raid Over Dubbo

Have you ever dreamed of raiding a warehouse full of arcade machine we used to play back in the day?

Well, that dream is now a reality, thanks to Dubbo Arcade and Amusements! From looking at the photos on their Facebook page, we reckon they may have pretty much what most of us are after, either an old school arcade machine from the 80s or 90s, those hard to find arcade game boards, Hankin cocktail tables, or perhaps a jukebox or a pinball machine to tickle your nostalgic nerve.

Whatever you are after, we reckon a visit to Dubbo may be in order 😉

Tetris 35th Anniversary Silver Coin

Last year’s NZ Mint commemorative Space Invaders 40th Anniversary Silver Coin totally blew us away. Luckily for us, there is another classic video game anniversary this year which NZ Mint will help us celebrate and commemorate with one of their beautiful and special silver coins.

35 years ago, a puzzle game was born from the imagination of computer programmer, Alexey Pajitnov. That puzzle game was Tetris! Inspired by Alexey’s favourite puzzle board game, Pentominos, Pajitnov created an electronic version that let players arrange puzzle pieces in real time as they fell from the top of the playing field. The resulting design was a game that used seven distinctive geometric playing pieces, each made up of four Tetriminos. The genius of Tetris is in its simplicity which hooks you in immediately, but to master it you need the precision of a skilled surgeon and the reflexes of a cat.

Tetris was dubbed the first ‘killer app’ when it was bundled in with Nintendo’s Game Boy handheld system. We easily spent thousands of hours playing Tetris all those years ago and the passion to play it till this day still burns brightly as the first time we made four lines vanish on screen! That fun little puzzle game from 1984 has been responsible for hooking people into playing video games.

To commemorate the 35th anniversary of Tetris on June 6, NZ Mint has released a limited edition 1oz silver coin. The silver coin features the Tetris game’s iconic Tetrimino shapes on a chequered, proof background, arranged in a way to make it appear as if they are falling, much like in the game itself – very clever and iconic! The coin is housed inside a specially designed Tetris-themed arcade cabinet and includes a colourful image of the Kremlin, paying homage to the game’s Russian origins. The cushioned black felt base which holds the coin can be slipped out by lifting up the arcade cabinet, revealing the gorgeous coin. The entire package, from the coin, the felt cushion and arcade cabinet housing oozes quality and gets the nostalgic juices flowing.

If you are a coin collector or you loved (and still love) playing Tetris, then the Tetris 35th Anniversary limited-edition silver coin is the perfect memento for you.

Mi-Sex: Computer Games

Watching the ABC’s Classic Countdown on the weekend, we saw a music clip that triggered a torrent of nostalgia. The music clip in question was Mi-Sex’s Computer Games.

Released in 1979, Computer Games was way ahead of its time, both in the context of the nascent computer and video gaming age, and the use of Control Data Corporation’s data centre to film their music video, which features a number of arcade games from 1979 – can you name them all? The answers are further down below – don’t you dare cheat!

For those of our vintage that remember this hit song, here it is for you to enjoy once again. And for those that haven’t heard this before, kick back and enjoy!
