Williams Defender Source Code Posted To Github

February 15, 2022 By ausretrogamer

Fancy checking out some assembly code of a classic arcade game from 42 years ago?

Thanks to Rob Hogan, you can now check out Eugene Jarvis’ (and his fellow Williams programmers’) assembly code from one of the most successful arcade titles from the golden age of the arcades, Defender!

Oh how we wish we had the necessary skills to comb through the code to find Easter eggs and amusing comments, as we are quite sure Eugene and co. would have inserted in this tough 1980 scrolling blaster!

If you do find some surprises in the code from ‘Dr J’ (aka: Eugene Jarvis), please let us all know either via Twitter or Facebook!

PS: This Defender code is for the ‘Red Label’ version of the game, which was one of four versions (the others being: White, Blue and Green) that were distributed to arcades.

Frogger – The TV Game Show! Ribbit!

September 20, 2021 By ausretrogamer

In case you missed it, there is now a TV show based on the classic Konami arcade game Frogger!

Just like the video game, contestants will require quick thinking and problem solving skills in varied challenges to be crowned Frogger champion and hop away with US$100K! If you like Wipeout (the TV show, not the video game) and enjoy the Ninja Warrior type shows, then Frogger will be right up your alley!

PS: Unfortunately, Peacock TV ain’t streaming Frogger in Australia (Ed: Boo!)

Battlezone: One of Atari’s Best

December 1, 2020 By David Cutler

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

Several years ago, my brother bought an Atari Flashback 64 console, and I became obsessed with playing the 1983 tank video game Battlezone. As crude as the first-person shooter graphics may be, the game feels like a real tank simulator (minus the volcanoes and UFOs).

I’ve always loved tank games. Usually, the more realistic ones are the most entertaining, but Battlezone’s simplicity is what makes it so fun and interesting. I didn’t know until I did some research that Battlezone is often considered the first virtual reality arcade video game. The home version doesn’t feel like virtual reality, but I can definitely see how the original 1980 arcade version can be seen as a “3-D success”. Looking through the “periscope” viewfinder, which the player used to play the game, had to be exciting and different. The originality of it had to help the player immerse themselves in the classic game. I’ve never had the pleasure of playing Battlezone in an upright arcade cabinet; I hope one day I will.

There is also a smaller version of the cabinet where the screen was angled upwards, and there was no periscope. I think I remember seeing that version of Battlezone at a local supermarket when I was little.

When I play Battlezone, I have a battle manoeuvre where I circle around and pick off enemy tanks and flying saucers, then I pick up speed in one direction for a while until something pops up on my radar. I wish the game had a better radar, but the primitiveness of it adds to the retro feel. You must be fast on the joystick’s trigger when opposing tanks just pop up on screen in front of you. Playing the ’83 game is still a challenging and thrilling experience.

A Space Invaders Movie Is Coming!

July 25, 2019 By ausretrogamer

Pew, pew, pew! Listen to (well, read) this…… New Line Cinema is working on a Space Invaders movie – yep, a movie based on Taito’s 1978 classic arcade shoot’em up!

It seems that the Hollywood film tank is running dry (or perhaps they are desperate for new ideas?), so they are dipping into the video game well for their next new movie. We hope this isn’t another rubbish film based on a video game (Ed: not looking at you Double Dragon!). Our expectations are quite low (it’s for the best).

We haven’t seen anything about a release date apart from hearing that New Line is very close to starting production. Oh yeah, if it matters to you, they have Greg Russo (Mortal Kombat) writing the film, and the following folks running production: Akiva Goldsman (Fringe, Star Trek: Discovery), Joby Harold (John Wick 3), and Tory Tunnell (Robin Hood).

We’ll update this post as more news comes to hand!
