Bartronica: Lair Of The Barcadian

August 4, 2015 By ausretrogamer

bartronica_HDRAfter a hard days work, where does one go to quench their thirst and get a fix of gaming nostalgia? That’s an easy one to answer – you make your way to Bartronica, a city barcade establishment at 335 Flinders Lane, Melbourne.

Nestled between Elizabeth and Queen (streets), the barcade is in the perfect spot in Melbourne’s Central Business District. The entry to Bartronica is via downward stairs, and upon entry, the establishment is revealed in all of its glory, beginning with the well stocked bar. Speaking of which, there are plenty of beverages which would definitely quench your hard earned thirst. As you down your drink, you notice the upright arcade machines; NBA Jam, Street Fighter II, The Simpsons, Mortal Kombat II, Golden Axe and 1943, and these are just the tip of the iceberg – there are plenty more upright machines jostling for your attention. It doesn’t end there, the venue also has driving and shooting cabinets plus six great pinball tables to get you flippin!

For those seeking comfort, Bartronica also has cool lounges for you to sit and take a load off. If you like to play from the comfort of the lounge, there are old school consoles from Sega and Nintendo which are free to play! The consoles provide a fun way to challenge your friends in some awesome multiplayer gaming action, like Super Mario Kart 64, all while kicking back and sipping on a drink.

With their wonderful hospitality, Bartronica makes everyone feel welcome – it is the kind of place where you would visit quite frequently, on your own or with friends. So the next time you are in the city and in need of a watering hole with a twist, then head on over to Bartronica, you’ll have a blast!

The Magic Of Sega: 3D Arcade Classics For Your 3DS

July 6, 2015 By ausretrogamer

Sega3D_AllBefore Yu Suzuki embarked on the Shenmue saga, he created some of the most technically impressive and enduring games for Sega. During that golden age of arcade machines in the 80s, you would have been hard pressed not to have played on at least one Sega arcade machine – there was the into the screen blaster, Space Harrier, the Top Gun dog-fighter After Burner II, the superb Super Hang-On, the Blue Thunder channeling Thunder Blade, the rail shooter Galaxy Force II (Deluxe Edition), and of course, the sublime driving game with that awesome radio with cool tunes, Out Run.

Sega3D_games

The conversions of these arcade games on our beloved 8 and 16-bit systems weren’t much chop, I mean, they were ok, but let’s face it, there was a vast chasm between the technically superior arcade hardware and the less-refined home based systems of yesteryear. Fast forward 30 odd years and you have home systems more powerful than a cabinet ten times the size! Imagine if someone told you in 1989 that you would have an arcade perfect version (Ed: actually, even better than the arcade!) of Space Harrier, After Burner II or even Out Run in the palm of your hands? Surely you would have had them committed. Well, before you call the psych ward, that day has come – If you are yearning for some vintage Sega arcade gaming nostalgia on your Nintendo 3DS handheld (Ed: Who would have thought that we would ever say Sega and Nintendo in the one sentence!), then rack up some Nintendo eShop credits and have yourself a blast!

The Thrill Of The Chase: Lost and Found Market

June 19, 2015 By ausretrogamer

LostandFoundWhat does one do when their weekend schedule is clear? Well, you can choose to lounge around at home to keep warm in this cold Melbourne winter, or you can head outdoors to a flea market to grab yourself a bargain!

As it turned out, Ms ausretrogamer and I did the latter – we hit the Lost & Found Market in Brunswick East for a spot of vintage kitsch shopping. From vinyls, old Barbie dolls, to an Apple Mac from the 80s, the market did not disappoint. Here are just a few of our favourite items from Lost & Found:

Twin Galaxies Arcade and eSports Event Centre

June 2, 2015 By ausretrogamer

TwinGalaxies_Title_1Just in case you have been off the grid in the last week or so, there have been some major announcement in the gaming world. No, we are not referring to Splatoon, which was released to much hype, but the other big news of the day was about the Twin Galaxies Arcade and eSports Event Centre.

TwinGalaxies_1

After being in the wilderness for what seems an eternity, Twin Galaxies has come out and announced the rebirth of Twin Galaxies Arcade! The 120,000 square feet purpose-built gaming centre will be the home for eSports World Championship tournaments, large presentations and conferences,  and the official home of the “Museum of Pinball” and Twin Galaxies “Arcade Expo”.

The private facility, which is partnered with Guinness World Records, also has a full outdoor live concert area, fibre optic internet for live broadcasting and multiple console stations equipped with everything from the latest modern gaming systems through to the older stuff like the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) and Nintendo Entertainment System.

TwinGalaxies_2a

It seems that Twin Galaxies has positioned itself to be the de facto organisation of gaming tournaments and competitions, much like the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and their Olympics! Go here to read more about the Twin Galaxies Arcade and eSports Event Centre.

Willy’s Arcade: A Home Entertainment Nirvana

April 29, 2015 By ausretrogamer

WillysArcade_TitleWhen you dream of having an arcade and pinball parlour integrated in your home, Gary McTaggert’s Willy’s Arcade is surely the perfect blueprint.

The former Valve programmer has the most awesome home arcade setup we have ever seen, from the classic arcade cabinets (Ed: which there are a lot of!) and pinball machines, to the fantastic nerdy artwork adorning the walls, and that oh-so-brilliant diner in the kitchen – it is truly the stuff of dreams!

Timezone Forest Hill Chase

March 2, 2015 By Ms. ausretrogamer

Ausretrogamer and I are no strangers to arcades – check out our previous stories about the giant Timezone Family Entertainment Centre on the Gold Coast and San Francisco’s Musée Mécanique.

We recently discovered a new fun arcade a little closer to home – Timezone Forest Hill.

Timezone

Before visiting I was dubious we could have as much fun as promised by the pictures on the website, but I was wrong. Despite its relatively small size, there were plenty of quality machines: Batman, Mario Kart 2, Tekken 6, Virtua Tennis and Time Crisis 4, among others.

The fun promised by the photos on the website seemed too good to be true

Tekken 6 and Virtua Tennis – Game, Set, Match

However, the highlight was the Stern Star Trek Pro pinball machine, one of the Australian Timezone Supanova Pinball Championship qualification tables. I think we will be heading back before entries close on 29 March for ausretrogamer to try his luck at qualifying for the Victorian state final!

And what better way to finish off than a visit to TGI Fridays where the geeky / retro theme was continued.

Australia Day, Ausretrogamer Style

January 26, 2015 By ausretrogamer

Some Australians celebrate Australia Day with a barbie (Ed: that’s barbecue for the uninitiated), others choose to sink a few beers and watch the cricket. For Ms. ausretrogamer and I, we chose to hit the road in search of some arcade and pinball machines.

Luckily for us, there were a few stores opened on this public holiday Monday. We did find a warehouse on the outskirts of Melbourne packed with arcade machines and pinball tables from all eras. We definitely got our fix of retro gaming eye candy this Australia Day!

The Thrill Of The Chase: Out and About

January 19, 2015 By ausretrogamer

An impromptu lunchtime sojourn comes up trumps! With no intention of hunting for retro or pop culture goodies, I was surprised what I found in Melbourne’s CBD (Central Business District) as I was out and about. From Sonic comics and video gaming related books, to bartop arcade machines at the most unlikeliest place, it was a lunch break I didn’t expect.

A great start to the week indeed. Oh yeh, my wallet was also worse for wear.
