Netherworld – Daytona USA Tournament

June 15, 2023 By ausretrogamer

Day-toooooo-naaaaaa USA! We absolutely love Daytona USA, it was and still is one of Sega’s most iconic arcade driving/racing games!

If you always fancied yourself as great Daytona USA player, then listen up, there is a tournament this Saturday (June 17) at Netherworld in Brisbane that you may want to participate in.

Rev your engine and put the pedal to the metal – the Netherworld Speedway is hosting the Daytona Cup with our major race sponsor Slipstream Brewing Company! Alongside a selection of Slipstream Brewing Co beers we’ll be pouring a special collab brew just for race day – the Powerslide East Coast IPA. Qualifying (time trial mode) happens from 10am to 3pm with the top 8 from each track going into the finals from 3pm. The finals (linked 4 player normal/battle mode) will be separated into Beginner, Advanced and Expert races with prizes awarded to the top 3 drivers on each track. For a little overtime, the top four overall participants with the highest points across all tracks earn a chance to compete in a one off Grand Prix mode on the advanced stage for ultimate glory.

Daytona USA Arcade – A Sorry Sight

September 7, 2022 By ausretrogamer

There is a special place in hell for the peeps responsible for this sickening sight!

We found this post by Sammy Levin on the Aussie Arcade Facebook group and were quite saddened to see an iconic Sega arcade game treated in such a way. Thankfully, Sammy updated his post to say that it was saved – woohoo! Phew, it is great to know that this sad story has a happy ending.

Long live Daytonaaaaaaaaaaa USA!

Sean’s Amazing Retro Video Game Art and Arcade Model Builds

June 8, 2022 By ausretrogamer

We have many talented friends around the world. One local multi-talented friend, Sean Tagg (aka:  ) is not only an accomplished Donkey Kong player, but he is also an arcade restorer, OutRun expert and an amazing artist (amongst many other talents)!

Out of all of Sean’s accomplishments and creations, it is his meticulous artistic skill and flair that always captures our attention and astounds us with each of his amazing creations. Sean’s artwork (like on his Shinobi runners) and model builds of iconic video games are simply stunning to say the least. If you don’t believe us, check out the video below!

Your Top 10 Favourite Classic Video Games

September 9, 2020 By ausretrogamer

The folks at Replay Magazine have been quite busy of late conducting classic gaming surveys, like Your Top 4 Favourite Classic Video Game Characters of All-Time, and their latest one, Your Top 10 Favourite Classic Video Games.

We were quite surprised to see Ms. Pac-Man at number 1, but then again, it is the best arcade Pac-Man game, so it deserves to be on any favourite classic video games lists. Galaga (woohoo!) was up there in second spot and of course, Donkey Kong! Oh yeah, great to see our fave arcade game of all time, Double Dragon, make the list too. But what happened to Street Fighter II?

Your Top 10 Favourite Classic Video Games by Replay Magazine:

  1. Ms. Pac-Man
  2. Galaga
  3. Donkey Kong
  4. Pac-Man
  5. Asteroids
  6. Daytona USA
  7. Double Dragon
  8. Galaxian
  9. Mortal Kombat
  10. Mr DO!

Nintendork Gets Nostalgic At Hersheypark

August 8, 2018 By Guest Contributor

By: Nintendork

It’s one of those things you never thought about when growing up – that these huge and heavy arcade machines would one day disappear and the amusement centres housing them would become extinct.

I always thought that arcade machines would be here to stay and that they would remain popular as ever with everyone. How wrong was I? Luckily for me, Hersheypark in Hershey, Pennsylvania is the big exception. Hersheypark could have gotten rid of their old arcade cabinets long ago but they decided to keep them and maintain them in working order. I love having my physical console games from when I was little and in this instance it is great to see these big arcade games remaining exactly the same as when I was a child, making them that extra bit special. To know that I put quarters in their Double Dragon machine when I was 12 and am playing the exact same game right now and doing the same thing beating up baddies means the world to me.

Hersheypark is the perfect destination for a hit of gaming nostalgia. Enjoy the pics!

Gone Retro Hunting

February 1, 2017 By ausretrogamer

What does one do on a lazy Sunday afternoon? They go hunting for some old school classic gear at the local vintage market in Brunswick East.

After a few goes on the Daytona USA and Tazmi’s TX-1 arcade machines, we got hunting. So, what did we find you may ask? Take a gander below…

Here we go!

One always starts their hunting by playing some Daytona USA

Then one must take it back a notch to playing the three-screen marvel, TX-1

Wish we could take this one home!

Cockpit is a bit worse for wear, but it’s still functional

Once we exhaust our coins, we get hunting. This is a pretty good start!

Now that is one cool framed movie poster!

The singing budgerigar – with a giant poster inside! Whoa!

Who you gonna call?

We wonder if we’ll see a The Last Jedi cup in the near future…

Master System games under $15! That is unheard of! *smiles*

Lights, camera, action!

The menacing King Kong Bundy!

Not the VHS tape we were looking for…

Skateboard anyone? Tony Hawk would be proud.

Liberace would’ve loved this phone!

A Fisher Price record player! No way!

Forget the Fisher Price record play, this is what you should play your vinyl on!

Those eyes!!!

Game of Nightmare, anyone?

G.I. Joe! Hang on, Sloth from The Goonies! *mind blown*

Duck Monster? Nah, that’s a P!
