Introducing the Wooden Game Boy – No Injection Moulding Here

June 18, 2024 By ausretrogamer

What does one do when they acquire a CNC router? Well, they put it to good use and create a wooden Game Boy, based on the OG case!

Physicist, coder and creative, Sebastian Staacks did exactly that with his newly procured machine, making a Game Boy out of walnut wood – thank fully based on the OG Game Boy from 1989. Sebastian has painstakingly documented the entire process on his site here and has also provided links to design files on Github – so if you have the itch to create something cool, then hop to it!

We gotta say it, this is one darn cool creation that we are in absolute awe of! Take a bow Dr. Sebastian Staacks.

The Time is 1-Up On This Super Mario Bros. LED Clock

July 5, 2022 By ausretrogamer

Thanks to Ms. Ausretrogamer for sending this through – this Super Mario Bros. RGB LED Clock is a DIY project we reckon we can tackle! We love the DMD look on the RGB LED Matrix!

The instructions for this DIY build by Jonathas Barbosa are nice and easy to follow, so we have no excuse to not being able to get this done (unless there is a shortage on the parts required!). You got to admit, this animated Super Mario clock makes an awesome retro decoration!

So, who is making this?

Real Boy – The Less Awful Virtual Boy Handheld

June 17, 2021 By ausretrogamer

Creator of mind-blowing portable consoles, Shank Mods, has done it again! This time he has wowed us with an even more amazing creation, the Real Boy – a ‘less awful’ and more awesome Virtual Boy portable system!

According to Shank Mods, this was a year in the making, with every detail painstakingly put together to create the super impressive Real Boy, complete with red backlit buttons!

Our eyes and brain would definitely prefer playing on this Real Boy instead of our real Virtual Boy.

Custom Mario Sunshine GameCube

December 20, 2019 By ausretrogamer

CustomMarioGCN_HDRWe love receiving emails from modders out there to show us their customisation work.

We received an email from Dorison Hugo (aka: @lyberty5 on Twitter) who tinkered with his purple GameCube to make it look like as if Mario was trapped inside the console. Dorison explains that this was a cosmetic mod, which still needed a bit of tinkering to get it done – like freeing up the space, in which he had to move the fan onto the other side of the case. Also, he had to drill small holes to allow air intake near the Mario figurine to ensure the console would not overheat.

This is a fairly simple and cheap-ish mod, with the window frame and Mario being made out of cheap water-based clay. Dorison has shown ingenuity throughout this customisation, including the use of cotton tips (Q-tips) acting as the prison bars. Dorison’s aim was to show that no real (and expensive) equipment was needed for a simple mod.

Have you customised your consoles? If you have, we’d love to check them out – hit us up on Twitter or Facebook!

DIY SNES Powered Mini Arcade Machine

February 10, 2015 By Ms. ausretrogamer

Can’t decide whether to play an arcade machine or console? No room for a full size arcade machine? Don’t worry – djkurtz92’s instructables page shows you how to create a cute little bar-top arcade machine powered by a SNES! And apparently his next project will use an original Xbox running MAME with hundreds (Ed: thousands!) of arcade ROMs, very cool.

If you are at all handy, you won’t be able to resist giving this project a go!

Here are a few pictures (including some of his previous Sega Genesis arcade machine) – and there are plenty more here.

Let’s begin!

DIY Retrogaming Clock

October 28, 2014 By Ms. ausretrogamer

Stuck what to buy for your gamer partner? How about upcycling (Ed: oo’er, fancy word!) that tired old clock you have hanging on the kitchen wall? What a great idea!

Not only will you save money, you will also get a sense of fulfillment by creating something that is uber cool and not to mention feeling proud of your DIY retrogaming time piece hanging in the games room.

OK, let’s get our hands dirty – trust us, this is straight forward and shouldn’t take you too long:

  1. Find four cool video gaming artworks (try here)
  2. Take old clock

1

  1. Stick background images together (leave one join open)

2a

2b

  1. Slide onto clock face and trace to outline onto the back of the paper. Cut the circle.

3

  1. Glue down backing paper, then glue space invaders magnets in place to mark numbers.

4a

4b

  1. Hang on wall!
