‘Boom Raider’ By Fury Fingers Films

January 22, 2016 By Ms. ausretrogamer

You already know we love Fury Fingers Films’ work, and now we have one more reason to love them because they’re back with another amazing video game parody film – this time they have set their sights on Rise of the Tomb Raider. In ‘Boom Raider’ watch Lara (played by the very talented ShiveeeJam) work hard to find just the right shot to make that red barrel go ‘BOOM!’.

Fury Fingers Films

November 22, 2015 By Ms. ausretrogamer

Australian film-makers ‘Fury Fingers Films’ make funny live action films about video games with plenty of bad-ass action and visual FX.

Fury Fingers was started by film school friends Nicholas Cleary, Andrew Shanks, Daniel Vink and David Gregan. Talented stuntman and fight choreographer Anthony Rinna is the most recent addition to the team (aka the 5th Beatle).

Making films has allowed the guys to develop and showcase their skills as visual effects artists, and become confident directing action, working with stunt / fight choreographers and parkour artists. Their next challenge is to learn about rope work and pyrotechnics (wow!). All their hard work has been worthwhile too, with big players such as Konami and Crystal Dynamics (among others) taking notice of Fury Fingers’ awesome films. Look out for their upcoming Tomb Raider fan film featuring Melbourne-based cosplayer Shiveeejam.

Watch a selection of their fantastic films below, and be sure to subscribe to their YouTube channel, like their Facebook page, and follow them on Twitter to keep up to date with their latest projects because these guys are going places!

Steven Spielberg To Direct ‘Ready Player One’

March 27, 2015 By Ms. ausretrogamer

spielberg plus cover

Deadline have reported Steven Spielberg is set to direct the film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s sci-fi bestseller Ready Player One (Random House Crown, 2011). If you haven’t read the book yet, check out diaf23’s review here.

Ready Player One Cover

Ready Player One is expected to follow Spielberg’s The BFG. Interestingly, this will be his first film with Warner Bros. since A.I. Artificial Intelligence in 2001.

Apparently the two biggest hurdles will be acquiring the rights to the myriads of pop culture references and finding the technology to bring Ready Player One’s virtual world to life. It will be very interesting to see which references do and do not end up in the movie.

With The BFG due for release in 2016, you still have plenty of time to read (or re-familiarise yourself with) the book – so get reading!

A 1972 Magnavox Odyssey Promo: I Like Them Cheesy

January 2, 2015 By ausretrogamer

magnavoxPrior to super-slick marketing videos, there was cheesy (and endearing) promotional films, just like this rare 1972 footage telling you all about the ground breaking Magnavox Odyssey video game system – the electronic game of the future!

Since there was no YouTube back then, this super-8 film was distributed to TV dealers in the very obscure Magi-Cartridge film-loop format, which could be viewed on special display devices in the dealer showroom. Would this video have got your attention? I know this promo would have sucked me in to getting Mr. Baer’s Odyssey, but that’s because I like my promotional videos to be big and cheesy.

The Power Of Glove: A Power Glove Documentary

July 15, 2013 By ausretrogamer

ThePowerOfGlove_570

Nintendo’s Power Glove – it’s so bad, that it’s so damn good! The Power Glove may not have worked as promised, but it’s legacy in pop culture is undeniable. Three film-makers (Adam Ward, Andrew Austin and Paula Kosowski ) have embarked on creating a documentary that chronicles Nintendo’s notorious game controller.

Check out the official trailer below of ‘The Power Of Glove‘ documentary.

We are not alone when we say, we cannot wait for this to be released!

The Space Invaders: In Search of Lost Time

June 9, 2013 By ausretrogamer

TSI_thespaceinvaders_longFilm: The Space Invaders: In Search Of Lost Time
Director: Jeff Von Ward
Studio: Wooden Horse Productions
Released: 2013
Distributor: Amazon Instant Video – $3.99 (7-day rental) or $14.99 (buy movie)
Synopsis: The Space Invaders: In Search of Lost Time will take you inside America’s hidden game rooms and into the hearts and minds of those who have made it their mission to enthusiastically preserve these important cultural touchstones.

Let’s get straight to it – as an arcade junkie, this film well and truly fed my need for retro gaming nostalgia. Jeff Von Ward has created a masterful film in which he tracks down and interviews some serious arcade collectors, like Jon Jamshid, who has amassed an impressive 180 machines!

The collectors share their passion for preserving these historic machines and the connection you feel with them is instantaneous – from scoring their first machine, their real estate woes, to the lengths they go to seek their next arcade hit.

TSI_jasonforester

You will be amazed by the number of machines that are stored in basements and garages (as well as the stories behind them all!). You will be blown away by the dedication of these collectors and their respective arcade setup, especially Peter Hirschberg’s Luna City Arcade – an amusement heaven.

Interspersed throughout the film is some amazing archival footage, including Damon Claussen’s appearance (with his mom!) on the Starcade TV game show. The flow of this film, from start to finish, feels natural and just right.

TSI_jeffhendrix

From the moment I sat down to watch ‘The Space Invaders: In Search of Lost Time’, I did not move nor blink (that may be a slight exaggeration) until the last credit was shown. Whether you are familiar with the arcade machines or not, this film is for anyone that has a nostalgic bone in their body, or would just like to find out what makes serious collectors tick.

Verdict: ‘The Space Invaders: In Search Of Lost Time’ is a wonderful film that should not be missed. Mr Jeff Von Ward, you deserve an Oscar!

Breaking News from the Director: Jeff reports that the film has just been picked up by New York City based digital entertainment curator, FilmBuff. FilmBuff has successfully distributed niche documentaries such as ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’ (the doc or anti-doc on Banksy) and ‘Super Size Me’.
