Epic Games and Disney Collaboration

In February, The Walt Disney Company put out a press release that Disney and Epic Games would collaborate on all-new games and an entertainment universe that will “further expand the reach of beloved Disney stories and experiences.” Epic Games is the video game and software developer that gave us “Fortnite” and “Gears of War.”

I feel like the two companies coming together and collaborating didn’t get much attention. The business possibilities for both seem limitless. What does the merger mean for parks? Could Disney have a “Fortnite” theme park that incorporates some of the features of the popular game? What “Fortnite” fan wouldn’t want to visit a park that encapsulates the game with a Disney twist? It could be very successful. And you already have two established brands that aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Does this merger of giants in entertainment mean that we’ll be able to play or have Disney character skins in “Fortnite”? That would be something that would bring in new fans for both Disney and “Fortnite.”

There are several Disney characters I would like to use to play “Fortnite” with. Donald Duck would be interesting, because visually it would be hilarious, and you know he’d have some cool weapons and a cigar in his mouth. Playing with Disney villains would be fun. Captain Hook would be a savage skin to use when navigating “Fortnite” terrain. Ursula would be cool as well. She would be ruthless and strategic in a game where you must use your intellect. She may have a difficult time dodging fire from opponents with all her tentacles. Her powers could be limitless in the game being a powerful sea witch.

Playing as one of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” could be thrilling as well. Rocket and Drax would make for one hell of a tag team.

 

 

Sega Reboots Classic Dreamcast Games

According to this Bloomberg article, Sega is gearing up to reboot a couple of iconic Dreamcast titles, Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio as part of their Super Game initiative!

These titles will be first ones released under Sega’s Super Game initiative, which Sega announced a year ago. Sega’s Super Game aims to develop recurring revenue sources and build online communities around its stable of video games.

Mimicking Fortnite’s model, Sega’s Super Game setup will offer their games as free to play, be available across multiple platforms, host large multiplayer contests and include extras like vehicles, construction and social events on top of the usual combat, ensuring they get players to purchase in-game items.

Not sure how we feel about this approach from Sega, but if it works for Epic Games with Fortnite, then we guess that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – if you can’t beat them, copy their business model!



Boba Fett Gets His Own Fortnite Skin

Boba Fett is hot right now. The Star Wars character has his own hit show on Disney+ and action figures of Fett are in high demand by collectors. Boba is cool again like he was in 1978, when he was introduced in the “Star Wars Holiday Special” and “The Empire Strikes Back,” in 1980.

Now, Disney has announced the bounty hunter’s addition to Fortnite. The Boba Fett skin in the battle royale is available to purchase by itself or as part of a Boba Fett Set. The set includes the bounty hunters Z-6 Jetpack back accessories, Gaffi Stick pickax, and Fett’s Starship glider. Several Star Wars characters, like The Mandalorian, Kylo Ren, and Rey have their own Fortnite skins. The release of “The Book of Boba Fett” is the reason for the addition of Boba.

I never saw Fortnite broadening their revenue stream with merchandise, like blankets, toys, and backpacks. The game is a phenomenon. Star Wars and Fortnite joining forces (no pun intended) is a perfect business collaboration. I see Star Wars and Fortnite merchandise out of the corner of my eye at my local Target.

The Disney+ series is introducing Boba Fett to a whole new generation of Star Wars fans. The first three episodes of “The Book of Boba Fett” have had moments of brilliance, and moments of incredibly slow pacing. For the first two episodes of the series, Kevin Costner should get a cheque from Disney. There are some odd similarities between “Dances with Wolves” and some of Boba Fett’s scenes with the Tusken Raiders. Banthas, the creatures that the Tusken Raiders and Boba ride, really get slaughtered in this series. What did the banthas do? The banthas’ deaths were shocking and seemed unnecessary.

In the first episode, I enjoyed seeing how Boba got out of the Sarlacc pit, or the Great Pit of Carkoon. It’s even better when you go back and watch “Return of the Jedi” again. I wish we could have seen more of Boba in the Sarlacc pit. How long was he in there?

I love the veteran actor Danny Trejo but seeing him as the Rancor wrangler in the third episode was a little jarring. The third episode had some problems, but I still enjoyed it. The chase scene through Mos Espa at the end of the most recent episode was tedious and unintentionally cliche. And there was fruit. A lot of fruit.

Will there be other characters from “The Book of Boba Fett” that’ll get their own Fortnite skin? Time will tell on an app or gaming platform not far, far away.

Online games, in particular, took off in a big way in the past year, thanks to global lockdowns that restricted social gatherings for many. Plenty of popular modern games, such as Animal Crossing, Fortnite, and Pokémon Go, have built-in social elements that help players feel connected. However, there are just as many communities built around retro games. Many of these communities have been running for years. Every popular retro game has a forum or Facebook page with a thriving, active community where you can engage with your fellow players in the online world.

Nowadays, it’s even possible to play many retro games online, such as spider solitaire online. These websites may or may not sync up to online leaderboards or other communities to allow you to play these traditionally single-player games competitively against others in a low-stress environment at your leisure.

Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training for the Nintendo DS made a case for puzzle games helping people keep their brains active – particularly the elderly and people at risk of dementia and memory loss. However, you can choose from plenty of retro puzzle games. They all meet the same essential criteria for keeping your brain sharp. These games provide challenges in the form of memory tests, mathematical puzzles, and logic challenges. There is scientific evidence backing the premise that playing these types of games regularly helps prevent a decline in mental acuity.

There is a growing body of evidence that playing games can positively impact our overall well-being. It is far from being the time-waster many people once viewed. PAX Aus 2019 Highlights

Judging by our PAX Aus Classic Gaming highlights feature, you would have been forgiven in thinking that there was nothing else to see at this year’s PAX Aus.

Well, we are here to tell you that there was stacks to see and experience, from great panels, awesome cosplay, pin and badge hunts to booth raids to check out the latest games and wares from indie devs and the big AAA studios and gaming companies.

A Fortnite Gameplay Coach

For part-time work, I do résumé consulting. I take past work information from clients and construct and build a résumé out of what they share with me. Recently, I had a client who just graduated from college. When I asked him to tell me about his work history, he told me that he makes money as a Fortnite gameplay coach. He said that he did it part-time and he charges $20 dollars per hour for his expertise on the Epic Games smash. The job surprised me a little, but it made sense; it seems like it’s the year of Fortnite.

I first heard about the free game when the singer Drake tweeted something about playing it with a famous gamer named Ninja. Then, quickly, I started hearing others talking about Fortnite. Now, I know people who stay in on Saturday night playing the addictive game.

My client told me that he mostly helps gamers with Fortnite: Battle Royale, and he plays along with them to guide them through combat. He helps with fighting strategies and how to be a better wall builder for shielding during fighting. And he said he always teaches clients to keep moving as if a sniper is always aiming at you from a far. The best advice he says he gives: Getting good angles during your enemies reload is vital. 

My client didn’t share with me how many actual wins he has. He sheepishly said to me, “A lot.” He added, “Every player wants wins and they’ll pay to gain them.”

As I listened to my client, I wondered if any of the information would be important to a potential employer. I suspect that many people in their 30’s and 40’s would have no idea what Fortnite was. But then, with the number of players rising into the millions, perhaps they would? The game’s just not being played by teenagers and college students. A potential employer who’s a fan of Fortnite may be impressed by a job candidate who took the initiative to start a small business to help other gamers. It’s one of the most non-traditional jobs that I’ve ever heard from a client.

There is a unique, unofficial Fortnite marketplace that exists. Fans of the game are buying other player’s profiles and skins on eBay for thousands of dollars. Fortnite, in an odd way, has become a game of status. None of the side businesses around Fortnite are approved by the makers of the game. But, when anything becomes as massively popular as Fortnite, an unconstrained marketplace is going to spring up.

I have never played Fortnite, but after my meeting with my client, I watched several live streams of the game. I don’t have a desire to play; however, as I was watching the live stream, 35,000 other people were watching as well. That’s a popular video game.
