Frogger – The TV Game Show! Ribbit!

September 20, 2021 By ausretrogamer

In case you missed it, there is now a TV show based on the classic Konami arcade game Frogger!

Just like the video game, contestants will require quick thinking and problem solving skills in varied challenges to be crowned Frogger champion and hop away with US$100K! If you like Wipeout (the TV show, not the video game) and enjoy the Ninja Warrior type shows, then Frogger will be right up your alley!

PS: Unfortunately, Peacock TV ain’t streaming Frogger in Australia (Ed: Boo!)

Top 20 Best-Selling Video Game Franchises of All Time

June 29, 2021 By ausretrogamer

It is always a humbling experience when seeing these ‘best selling’ lists related to video games. This time, it is the franchises – the heavy lifters of their respective publisher’s bottom line.

No surprise who is on top, by a massive margin – Mario, Nintendo’s crown jewel. Mario has been a juggernaut franchise for decades! Any game containing the Italian plumber (formerly Jumpman) is almost a guarantee to make bank for Nintendo, from the Super Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Sports and Mario Party series, to Mario RPG! When looking at the list, Mario is in some good company with other massive Nintendo franchises, like the Wii simulation series and of course, The Legend of Zelda. The Wii series was a surprise, as we would have expected Donkey Kong or Metroid to be up there too.

Looking at the chart, you will notice a mixed bag of game franchises that started in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, with Minecraft being the sole representative for the 2010s! No wonder we keep seeing Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto games being made on new generation systems, they sell like hotcakes. Not content with being the biggest pop culture entity, Star Wars has done quite well in the video gaming realm too. Great to see Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog up there and the many sports titles we have enjoyed (and still enjoy).

See any surprises?

Our Favourite Retro Games on the Pico-8

February 1, 2021 By ausretrogamer

There are a heap of great Pico-8 games out there, but for those of you yearning for a hit of nostalgia on the fantasy console, you may find it difficult to find that classic 80s game you enjoyed in the arcade amongst the plethora of available Pico-8 games.

Well, we are here to help you find a few needles in the massive haystack of Pico-8 games that will help with your hunger for nostalgia. Get your Pico-8 ready, and start favouriting these games:

Wizard Rule: If it’s Wizard of Wor you are after, then this port is absolutely amazing. We can’t stop playing it!

Galactic Wars: Um, it’s Galaga, and it’s awesome.

Pico Tetris: As if it wasn’t addictive enough on the Game Boy, this version is just as addictive.

Pico Sprint: A suped up version of Super Sprint on the Pico-8, need we say more?

Pico Frogger: Leap onto the highway and avoid the cars and other obstacles to reach the other side. The iconic arcade game is superb on Pico-8. If in case this Frogger version doesn’t feel right, then check out Minionsoft’s Frogger.

Bomb’n Picoman: eliminating your enemies by placing bombs strategically, just like Bomberman, it’s darn enjoyable.

Sonic 2.5:  Don’t be thrown off by the .5, there is nothing half about this version of Sonic The Hedgehog. This is a work of art and has the speed to match.

MOTU: If you liked Palace Software’s head-chopping Barbarian game, then this version with Masters of The Universe characters takes it to a new and cooler level.

Super Mario Bros: How can we have a list without the little Italian plumber? Easy, we add him here as SMB is cool to play on any device.

Gaplus – Galaga Edition: There is nothing Galaga about this side-scrolling shoot’em up, but that’s not to say it is bad. If you like games like Salamander or R-Type, then this game is for you!

Bubble Bobble: The cutest dinos, Bub and Bob, are back and still as awesome as ever. This game never gets old -on any platform!

Minionsoft Scramble: The Minionsoft treatment is fantastic on this classic arcade game!

NOTE: Most games are available via the official PICO-8 site, while others can be found via itch.io.

Well, there you have it, a list of a few classic old games (and some not so old) to play on the Pico-8 that will satisfy any retro gamers’ nostalgia yearnings. Enjoy!

While searching for a cool pinball-themed T-shirt for ausretrogamer, I stumbled across Preston Burt’s simply beautiful minimalist arcade posters on the Gameroom Junkies Podcast website. Interestingly, Preston is also a founder of the Southern-Fried Gameroom Expo (in Atlanta, June 19-21 2015) – if only I lived in the US!

My Atari Story: Sue Lamport

June 24, 2014 By ausretrogamer

The Atari 2600 is where gaming truly began for me.

The year was 1979, I was five years old. My mum bought the Atari 2600 from Boans in Perth (which is now Myer department store) as an anniversary present for my dad. I’m not sure how much it cost back then but mum reassures me it was ‘a bloody fortune’. I can remember sitting next to this huge box in a nearby cafe just staring at all the little screens pictured on this wonderful box while my mum and grandmother chatted. How I wished it was for me! I just wanted to go home and see it, what was it? Prior to this, all I knew was Pong. My grandmother had Pong on an old black and white TV. It had two paddles that slid up and down, that was it! Don’t laugh, that was fun back then. I can remember we all had a go. But the Atari, just sitting in the box as it was, fascinated me. It was colourful and all the screens on the box had something different going on, not just two white lines and bouncy square.

Sue_AtariBox

From here on I pretty much grew up with the Atari. At first, my time using it was heavily restricted but as time went by I got to use it more often. My parents soon realised they could use it as a potential for punishment, ‘Look, if you don’t behave no Atari!’. I shocked my dad one day who came home from work and saw how well I was doing on Frogger. After I had gone to bed he tried his best to match me, but he couldn’t. I also surprised my uncle when it came to games like Warlords, in how well I could hold my own against the other adults. It became a regular thing on a Saturday for mum and dad to have friends and family over to play. Everyone had to have a go at Combat, my aunty loved Asteroids, my mum’s favourites (even to this very day) are Space Invaders – especially invisible Space Invaders – and Kaboom!; but I loved them all. The first game I ever finished was Defender. I was very sick in bed at the time and mum put the Atari in my room. I guess there is no harm in admitting now that I was in no hurry to get better.

Sue_Atari_Games

I am very pleased to say that the same machine, with all those wonderful memories attached to it, still works and is still in the family today. Mum still has it in its own custom built box. The original box died years ago, so at the time my Dad (a wood machinist by trade) built his own with special compartments for the console, controllers and games. The Atari, for me, isn’t just a console, it’s a family heirloom. I have my own hand-me-down console from my aunty, and although mine is not the ‘woody’ like our original family console, it does the job just fine.

ILoveAtari

I’ve played some of the old games on today’s modern systems, such as the PSP and Xbox 360, but trust me on this; you cannot beat the Atari console itself. Games like Kaboom! and Night Driver are both fine examples of when you must use the paddles! But it’s good to see these games getting the exposure they deserve. And it is certainly something to see my kids play games on my old Atari, and enjoy them just as much as I did.
