Super Mario Bros. Aquarium

This gorgeous aquarium was made by designer and blogger Kelsey Kronmiller and it took her about 336 hours in total to build – but I’m sure you’ll agree it was well worth the effort.

Retro Gaming Refashioning Japanese Style

October 22, 2014 By ausretrogamer

Care to use Twitter on your Game Boy? Perhaps you would rather use Microsoft’s Office applications on Nintendo’s little coloured beast? I know, you want to Skype your friend with vintage equipment!

Ah yes, welcome to good use of retro gaming gear Japanese style! You got to hand it to the Japanese, they know how to refashion old equipment and make you notice it. I wish I was this clever. Now hand me those SNES headphones and scroll through these epic pics!

Nintendo Delights: Customised Consoles

July 2, 2014 By ausretrogamer

There are some horrific customised paint jobs on Nintendo consoles, then there is Zoran’s creations, which are, simply put, stunning. From the Super Metroid themed SNES (Ed: oh that scorched orange!), Choplifter II camo original Game Boy, and to my favourite, the TRON: Legacy N64, complete with beautiful lighting – perfect for playing Perfect Dark or Goldeneye 007 in the dark!

Just take a look at some of Zoran’s creations and let us know your favourite via Twitter or Facebook.

Exploring New York City with a Game Boy Camera

May 27, 2014 By ausretrogamer

Before digital cameras were common place, the only way you could take digital photos at an affordable price was via cheap and nasty cameras or add-on contraptions for the Game Boy.

Speaking of Nintendo’s little pocket rocket, the below photos of New York City landmarks and people were taken with a Game Boy camera back in 2000. There is a certain charm in grainy low-resolution black and white photos – heck, there are camera apps nowadays emulating this on your smartphone! We may have come a long way with camera resolution being measured in the tens of megapixels, but we still love the fuzzy feeling we get when seeing these heavily pixelated photos.

Steampunk Video Gaming

May 7, 2014 By ausretrogamer

Forged from the mechanical aesthetics of steampunk fiction, we give you the best of steampunk inspired video gaming systems.

So what do you think – Do you want your NES to look like it came out of the 19th century steam-powered industrial revolution? I like it! Anyway, I think I’ll take them all, especially that steampunkish arcade machine.

Best-Selling Portable Video Game Systems Of All Time

January 8, 2013 By ausretrogamer

GB    Lynx    Game Gear_1

In last week’s Best-Selling Video Game Consoles: 1972 to 2002 post, it was clear that Sony had taken the stranglehold in the consoles market in the mid 90’s. The portable games market is a different beast. From the early days of crude portability with the tabletops, to Gunpei Yokoi’s wondrous Game & Watch series, the pedigree of portable gaming had been set quite early. Once the Game Boy burst onto the scene (another Gunpei Yokoi creation), Nintendo knew they had a winner. Which portable systems gave the Game Boy a run for its money ? Look below, there should not be too many surprises.  [Read more…] about Best-Selling Portable Video Game Systems Of All Time
