Modding Our Arcade1Up Pinball With IntecGaming’s Nintendo Switch Panel

There were a couple of things we were looking forward to this year, Stern Pinball’s Insider Connected Kit for our Star Wars pinball machine, and IntecGaming’s Nintendo Switch Panel for our Arcade1Up (virtual) pinball machine.

Well, it was almost 2 for 2 in 2022, however, our Stern Pinball Insider Connected kit was delivered incomplete – which means we will have to wait for the next boat to arrive down under.

On the flip side, the IntecGaming panel for our A1Up pinball machine arrived and we can’t wait to get it installed! Just in case you have no idea what this thing is or does, check out our previous post here.

We will write about our exploits of getting this mod installed, so stay tuned (and wish us luck)!



Hacker Runs DOOM on Electronic Badge

Wish we were as clever as programmer Phil Ashby.

DOOM seems to be able to run on anything electronic with a screen, so Phil didn’t want to miss out. He took his electronic Tidal badge from the 2022 ElectroMagnetic Field Festival (aka EMFCamp) in the UK and got it to run DOOM, yes, DOOM!

Real Boy – The Less Awful Virtual Boy Handheld

Creator of mind-blowing portable consoles, Shank Mods, has done it again! This time he has wowed us with an even more amazing creation, the Real Boy – a ‘less awful’ and more awesome Virtual Boy portable system!

According to Shank Mods, this was a year in the making, with every detail painstakingly put together to create the super impressive Real Boy, complete with red backlit buttons!

Our eyes and brain would definitely prefer playing on this Real Boy instead of our real Virtual Boy.

The Sega Saturn Laptop That Will Give You Wood!

Oo’er, this is one slick portable wooden Sega Saturn!

c_mon’s creation is the first Sega Saturn laptop we have ever seen, and definitely the one and only wooden Sega Saturn lappie! Oh yeah, don’t get too excited about buying one, this was a commissioned piece for one lucky gamer.

For posterity’s sake, here are the specs:

  • CNC-cut wood with CNC artwork / engraving
  • 5″ Sony PSOne screen
  • Standard Sega Saturn controller ports
  • Power and Reset buttons
  • Cooling fan
  • EL wire used to look stylish
  • Stereo sound with composite video
  • 9V 4A DC adaptor

SNES Classic Mini: To Hack Or Not To Hack, That Is The Question

Hack or not to hack the SNES Classic Mini: that is the question and my dilemma! On the one hand, I want the SNES Mini to remain as it was intended by Nintendo, and on the other, I want to load it up with more games than you can poke a stick at!

Apart from entering the murky waters of gaming rom legalities, I also don’t want to risk bricking my cute little SNES. I am aware that the hack to load more games is well tested and there are easy to follow instructions out there, but I choose to leave my SNES Classic Mini as is – with its 21 legal video games!

I’ll admit that in the past I dabbled in the shadows of piracy by exchanging C64 games on tape in the schoolyard. Even though I thought it was cool to do this back in the day, I am now filled with regret that I had cheated the creators of making a pretty penny for their creation. The other and less moralistic reason for not wanting to hack my SNES Classic Mini is that I’ know I would suffer from being spoiled for choice. When faced with a choice of hundreds of gaming roms, I know I’d skim past a fair few of them, thus missing out on playing some real gems, and worse still, not play a load of games due to the sheer volume of choice.

Whatever your choice, you can do whatever you see fit with your SNES Classic Mini. I just chose to leave mine alone.
