10 Years Of Classic Gaming at PAX Aus

Cheers to 10 years of inducing intoxicating gaming nostalgia at PAX Aus!

Another PAX Aus is done and dusted, but this was no ordinary year, it was the 10th year the event had been held here in Melbourne (Australia, not Florida).

For this celebratory year, the Classic Gaming (CG) area was moved from its usual Freeplay section to the main Expo Hall, rubbing shoulders with modern AAA gaming heavyweights and indie devs.

Starting the Classic Consoles (as it was known back then) area in 2013 with Retrospekt, Retro Domination and our (Ausretrogamer) team, we knew it would be a hit with attendees of all ages – which not even Melbourne’s inclement July weather could stop anyone getting their nostalgia hit at the inaugural PAX Aus event.

Over the years, the Classic Gaming area has grown from strength to strength, with its popularity ensuring that it returns at every PAX Aus – with an even bigger floor space! The inaugural teams may no longer be involved, but the baton change with the Weird and Retro and the Press Play On Tape Podcast crew has ensured the growth and sustained popularity of the Classic Gaming area.

For the tenth anniversary, the Classic Gaming area didn’t disappoint, with a plethora of amazing machines from yesteryear to tickle every nostalgic nerve in the body. From all of our old favourites from the 8-bit and 16-bit era (hello Atari, Commodore, Sega and Nintendo) all the way through to some darn awesome old-school PC power – and whomever thought of using the Dance Dance Revolution mat to control your (Doom Slayer) character in Doom (cheekily christened Doom Doom Revolution) should be given a knighthood! We hear that we have to now call Aaron (aka: Blahjedi), Sir Aaron of Press Play On Tape podcast, from now on 😉

Back in 2015, Skott Kellett proposed to include pinball in the Classic Gaming area, which was an instant hit! The pinball section has now become a permanent fixture of the Classic Gaming area, ensuring gamers can get their mechanical hit via the silverball game. Skott is still the main wrangler of the pinball section, with games provided by Reality Games Australia, Mr Pinball Australia and the Australian Pinball Museum. We were lucky enough to experience some quite rare and hard to find pinball games, from Dutch Pinball’s The Big Lebowski, CGC’s Cactus Canyon Remake, Pinball Brothers‘ Queen, to American Pinball’s amazing Galactic Tank Force, complete with tank tracks and backbox turret!

But wait, there was more! PLAION Australia had the yet-to-be released Atari 2600+ console on display, which was impressive. We have been quite critical of Atari over the years, but even we are quite excited to get our hands on the new 2600+ console!

Last but not least, it is the people that bring the Classic Gaming area to life that we love the most, from the CG showrunning team members to the PAX Aus Enforcers, and the public that come in and reminisce with us about systems and games from a long long time ago.

The Legend of Super Mario: The Zelda X Super Mario Bros. You Must Play

The Legend of Zelda takes on Super Mario Bros. in this cool mashup!

There is one way to make us play the original The Legend of Zelda, mash it up with one of our fave NES games, Super Mario Bros.!

Hacking games and mashing them up isn’t anything new, but when the hacked sum is greater than the individual games, we take note. Swedish ROMHacking user NESDraug has hacked together two of the greatest NES games, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. to create an awesomely playable The Legend of Super Mario mashup game. Featuring Super Mario elements set in the original world of Hyrule might just make us experience a Zelda-like game on the NES – yes, we are one of those in the minority that never were into or wanted to play Zelda games.

If you want to experience The Legend of Super Mario, you can get the game patch from ROMHacking right here. Oh yeah, you will need a patching tool (like Lunar IPS) to patch the original rom file with the .ips patch file – that’s all we can tell ya without incriminating ourselves.

Atari’s 1975 Hi-Way Arcade Game

It is always quite interesting when stumbling upon footage of an old arcade game that many of us either didn’t experience or had long forgotten about it. One such game is Atari’s arcade driving game, Hi-Way. Hands-up those who saw or played this game in an amusement centre? We bet not many of you did – but if you did, count yourself lucky, as this was and still is a hard game to find!

Atari’s Hi-Way (aka: Highway and Hyway!) is a black and white vertical driving game where players avoid oncoming cars – just listen to that glorious sound! Produced in 1975, this (almost 50 year old) Atari game was built with discrete logic chips, using transistor–transistor logic (TTL) chips!

The Forgotten 1970s Toys

Rhetty For History recently took a trip down nostalgia lane to bring us all the popular toys and games from the 1970s, noting that many had since been forgotten (well, not by us!).

The 1970s had a lot of toys for kids to choose from and some of those have remained popular to this day. Other toys weren’t so luck and some have been lost over time. In this video we will remember some of the 1970s forgotten toys!

We definitely remember games like The Hungry Hungry Hippos and Simon, but had definitely forgotten about The Bionic Woman board game, Lite Bright and Wooly Willy – did we even get any of these in Australia? Actually, there were quite a few games & toys from that era that induced nightmares too (not looking at you Jack-in-the-Box!).

Our fave toys from the 1970s were the Steve Austin action figure, the Kenner Star Wars action figures and pretty much every Matchbox car under the sun! We are probably forgetting some, but the ones we’ve mentioned are seared in our  hippocampus.

STARCADE – The Classic Arcade TV Game Show Will Be Recorded Live at Netherworld

If we lived in Brisbane, we’d be all over this awesome event that Netherworld is hosting this Saturday (May 20th)!

This Saturday is STARCADE!!! A classic arcade TV game show recorded live in the Netherworld with YOU as the star! Register to be a contestant via events.humanitix.com/starcade !

A love letter to the classic 80’s arcade show Starcade, everyone is encouraged to look the part! The show will be broadcast on the day via twitch.tv/netherworldarcade with no tuning into the community television station needed.

Over a number of 4 player heats, players will be pitted against other contestants in both classic arcade trivia AND classic arcade gaming, so you’ll need both brains AND arcade brawn to make it through to the final round. Each round will consist of quick fire, hand on the buzzer trivia questions followed by some classic games chosen at random.

Registration comes with your first drink and a Starcade enamel pin. If you don’t want to participate in the game show, you’re more than welcome to just rock up to watch along in the audience! It kicks off this coming Saturday (May 20th) at midday and is suitable for all skill levels.

Numskull Designs Launches Space Invaders Quarter Arcades

Whoa, what a way to finish off the week! Numskull Designs have launched their new entrants in the Quarter Arcades series, Space Invaders and Space Invaders Part II!

With Space Invaders celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2023, Numskull Designs are releasing the iconic and influential masterpieces in the form of two new quarter scale arcade cabinets –Space Invaders & Space Invaders Part II. Pre-orders are now open via the Numskull Designs site right here.

Space Invaders originally burst in the scene in the golden era of arcade gaming and set the bar for those that followed. Since its release in 1978, it has gone on to become a global pop-culture phenomenon. Developed by Tomohiro Nishikado, the game has been cited as revolutionising the arcade industry as well as having an influence on many famous video game designs since.

A X68000 Mini Is Coming

Now here is one out of left field! Not to be outdone by the likes of Nintendo, Sega and a plethora of other minis on the market, Mizuki (a one-stop service provider from planning to mass production of electronic products) teased on their Twitter account that they are planning to produce a X68000 Mini, which by the look of the photos, looks pretty darn awesome!

It looks like the product will have a pop-up carrying handle on top of the main body, just like the real Sharp X68K! Complete with a mouse that is also a trackball and a LED keyboard, which they are considering to add a keycap exchange gimmick – so clever!

Is your mind blown yet? Ours definitely is. No other official announcements have been made, but let’s just say that WE WANT THIS ASAP!

You Can Now Play OutRun on Atari 8-Bit Computers!

Say what?! Yep, OutRun can be played on your Atari 8-bit (A8) XE/XL computers!

This is a Work In Progress (WIP), so there is more content/improvements coming, but for now, it is still looking and sounding pretty darn good!

Read up on the development/progress of OutRun on the AtariAge forum and download the WIP file direct from here. Brush the dust off your A8 computers (grab your Atari MAX cart) and get some OutRun into ya!
