AtGames & Zen Studios Present: The Addams Family Virtual Pinball Machine

September 19, 2023 By ausretrogamer

The Addams Family pinball machine still holds the record as the biggest selling pinball machine of all time. There is a reason for this feat, the machine is much loved, as it is so much darn fun to play, with mechs that make you go wow, to multi-balls that can make your head spin. The Addams Family pinball machine is the epitome of a fun game!

Why are we talking about a 30 year old pinball machine? Well, AtGames is now collaborating with Zen Studios to bring you The Addams Family pinball machine, packed with 15 other pinball tables and of course, the amazing The Addams Family, all in glorious digital format.

Not much more news than that, but from what we can see on the AtGames site, the machine has a reasonable spec (see specification image further below), which we are happy to see that it includes built in solenoids and speakers for haptic feedback, making the pinball realism as close as possible to the real thing. The machine can also be expanded with 140+ Legends 4K pinball tables via AtGames’ PinballNet subscription service (Ed: D’oh!) which sounds pretty cool, even though it means an additional cost for the subscription (your mileage may vary).

Pre-orders will be staggered across a number of waves, opening the first (early bird) pre-order stage on 22nd of September (US time), however, there is no mention if these will be officially available in Australia – c’mon AtGames, don’t let us down!

A Chef’s Kiss – Stern Pinball & Their James Bond 007 Decals

July 14, 2023 By David Cutler

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

I stumbled upon a tweet from Stern Pinball where it was showing designers applying decals to a James Bond 007 pinball machine. The cool decals were various James Bond movie posters from the 1960s, the Sean Connery era.

Nothing else at theatres looked like the early Bond posters, like the films. If I were to randomly see those posters on the side of a pinball machine, I’m playing it. The images make anything exciting and intriguing; a movie, a pinball machine… the perfect assortment of colors make you want to be a part of it.

Stern Pinball’s James Bond 007 (Pro)

The “Dr. No” poster looks so quant compared to the other Bond posters, but no movie poster looked quite like it pre-1962. The bright yellow with the title in red lettering made moviegoers take notice, and ask, “What is this ‘Dr. No’?” Connery with the smoking Walther PPK, alongside four of his female costars, is visually stunning to the eye. The palm trees in the lower, righthand corner of the poster gives it a Jamaican feel. It’s not easy to see, but it’s a great touch, right below the title of the first James Bond film. It shows off the Bond universe so well. It is a work of art; I’m sure ad men on Madison Avenue were enamored by the “Dr. No” poster.

I know I probably couldn’t afford a Stern James Bond pinball machine, but I want one so bad. I play a lot of pinball games on my Nintendo Switch; that would drastically change if I had my very own James Bond pinball machine.

Separately, James Bond and pinball machines have given me hours of entertainment and enjoyment. Stern Pinball can’t go wrong putting the two things together.

Stern’s Venom Pinball Set to Make Waves at Comic-Con

July 12, 2023 By ausretrogamer

Hands up who is going to the Comic-Con International in San Diego next week? If you are, we are very very jelly! Why? Well, apart from being at one of the best Cons in the world, there will also be a new pinball machine unleashed by Chicago based Stern Pinball!

Speculation surrounding the release of Venom, a game that has been shrouded in secrecy for some time, is finally reaching its climax as the renowned comic book-themed pinball machine is set to be revealed at Comic-Con (July 20-23). Designed by the esteemed Brian Eddy, with art by the talented Zombie Yeti, this game has been patiently awaiting its moment in the spotlight.

Sources close to the industry have revealed that Venom was actually ready for launch earlier, but it was shelved temporarily to ensure that James Bond 007, a crucial release for the brand’s 60th anniversary, hit the market on schedule. The strategic decision to prioritize the iconic secret agent’s milestone celebration undoubtedly raised the anticipation surrounding Venom’s unveiling even higher.

Brian Eddy (L) and Dwight Sullivan (R) with Brian’s sophomore Stern title, The Mandalorian

In an exciting turn of events, Orange County Pinballs, a trusted distributor, has confirmed that attendees at Comic-Con will have the opportunity to get their hands on the new cornerstone game. However, contrary to earlier reports, demo games from the show will not be available at a discounted price. It seems that eager fans will have to wait a little longer to bring the pinball action home, as production of the game is projected to commence in September. Nevertheless, the chance to experience Venom firsthand at the convention is an opportunity not to be missed.

Comic-Con attendees are in for a treat as the event’s program guide reveals a must-attend seminar titled “Into the Pinverse: From Comic Book to Pinball.” Scheduled for July 20 at 2:30 PM Pacific Time, the seminar promises a captivating moderated Q&A session featuring industry heavyweights such as Seth Davis (CEO of Stern Pinball), Zach Sharpe (head of Marketing), and Brian Eddy (lead game designer). Pinball enthusiasts and comic book aficionados alike can look forward to gaining unique insights into the creative process behind bringing these beloved characters to life on the pinball stage.

As the excitement builds to a crescendo, Stern Pinball has stoked the flames of anticipation by releasing a tantalizing teaser video for their upcoming game. The footage confirms the long-standing rumor that Venom will indeed be the star of the show, setting pulses racing with its intense gameplay and captivating visuals. To further ignite fans’ fervor, a very limited number of Venom LE (Limited Edition) pinball machines will be available for purchase exclusively on the Stern Store, providing an exclusive opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike to own a piece of pinball history.

The countdown to Comic-Con begins, and pinball enthusiasts around the world eagerly await the reveal of Stern Pinball’s Venom. With a dream team of designers and artists behind the scenes, this new cornerstone title is poised to make waves and leave a lasting impact on the industry. Stay tuned for the latest updates as the pinball universe braces itself for an electrifying new addition.

Pulp Fiction Pinball – The Bad Mother Flipper

March 14, 2023 By ausretrogamer

When Ms. Ausretrogamer gets excited for a new pinball machine, you know it is going to be a special one!

One of the most requested themes in the pinball world has been Pulp Fiction, the cult classic 1994 crime film by Quentin Tarantino. Almost 30 years since the movie was released, Chicago Gaming Company and Play Mechanix Pinball have answered our prayers with a lineup of Pulp Fiction pinball beauties!

The Pulp Fiction lineup!

image source: Chicago Gaming Company (prices in $USD)

The Bad Mother Flipper LE

Designed by Mark Ritchie, who also designed classic pinball machines Fish Tales and Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure in the early 1990s, this new machine is in keeping of the era,  reminiscent of the alphanumeric / early solid state machines, which translates well with this theme. Checking out the below trailer, there is no doubt that Pulp Fiction translates well into the world of pinball.

source: Chicago-Gaming Company

From their website, Chicago-Gaming Company state:

Pulp Fiction is a retro-inspired full-featured modern pinball machine. Developed at the request of Quentin Tarantino who wanted an 1980’s style Pulp Fiction themed pinball machine for his home. Tarantino’s continued involvement throughout the project shaped the final game. Tarantino rarely licenses his intellectual property, it is a unique privilege to produce a game which pays tribute to this masterpiece.

Legendary pinball designer Mark Ritchie masterfully crafted a playfield which on its surface appears comparable to games from this era but outside of initial perception features more mechanisms and greater depth than most games produced today. David Thiel forcefully pulls the player into this world utilizing over 250 iconic lines from Pulp Fiction’s legendary cast, five licensed songs from the original movie soundtrack, and a number of original compositions. Josh Sharpe developed an approachable rule set that is both intuitive and deep enough to engage even the most skilled player. Scott Pikulski’s vintage inspired art package is both stunning and perfectly cohesive.

The Limited Edition (LE) will surely sell out quite quickly, are you getting one?

It’s Time We Got A F1 Themed Pinball Machine!

March 8, 2023 By ausretrogamer

We love asking the tough questions here at ausretrogamer. Today we ask, is it time for a pinball manufacturer to capitalise on the Formula 1 (F1) popularity by creating a modern themed pinball machine based on this pinnacle of Motorsport racing? F1 cars and pinball share a lot in common, both are highly engineered and precision made machines, with thousands of parts making them tick to perfection, and let’s not forget, they require skills to get the best out of them.

Thanks to the Netflix produced Drive To Survive docuseries (season 5 now streaming on Netflix!), F1 has experienced a renaissance, seeing its popularity break records by garnering new interest from all walks of life, including interest from teenagers, women and young kids, which previously were underrepresented. With pinball also enjoying a golden era, the fusion of this racing theme into a pinball machine would definitely not hurt in expanding the popularity of the silverball game – it’s a match made in heaven!

Stern’s ‘Stern Of The Union’ Newsletter for November 2022 contained this pic with Max Verstappen that we hope is a hint!

Of course the licensing side would impact what can and cannot be included in such a theme, however, there are many different ways to infuse the F1 theme into a pinball machine, either based on a manufacturer/team, a popular driver, famous track or the F1 as a collective.

Now imagine a F1 pinball machine featuring exotic materials like carbon fibre rails, a rear wing topper and an integrated F1-style steering wheel on the lockdown bar for certain modes. As for the playfield and rules, well, we can only dream big; from incorporating qualifying laps to get to pole position, pitstops when your car needs to be fixed or requires a fresh set of tyres, to hitting a gear shifter to change gears and possibly hit DRS to kick off DRS multiball and ultimately get to the Chequered Flag wizard mode to be crowned F1 champion – the list of what to include in the design and play of such a pinball machine is (almost) limitless.

We love Stern’s Mustang, but we really want a F1 themed pinball machine!

The EM Grand Prix was cool back in the day

We are aware that there are a few car/racing themed pinball machines, from Stern’s Mustang and Grand Prix, Bally’s Corvette, Williams’ The Getaway to Sega’s Viper Night Driving and Data East’s Checkpoint (to name just a few), but we are still missing a F1 specific pinball machine, so please please let’s have one!

Imagine if you will a Stern Pinball F1 machine……
