Pokémon GO City Safari is coming to Sydney this December

October 8, 2025 By ausretrogamer

Pokémon GO City Safari Is Coming to Sydney – Catch ‘Em All in the Harbour City!

Pokémon Trainers, get ready to dust off your Poké Balls and charge your phones – because Pokémon GO City Safari is making its Australian debut in Sydney this December! Whether you’re a seasoned Trainer or a nostalgic fan who remembers the glory days of Red and Blue, this is one event you won’t want to miss.

What’s Happening?

On December 13 and 14, 2025, Sydney will transform into a real-life Pokémon playground for Australia’s very first City Safari. From the sparkling waters of Darling Harbour to the leafy paths of Centennial Park, you’ll be able to explore iconic landmarks, discover hidden gems, and encounter Pokémon in the wild – all while meeting fellow fans and soaking up the city’s summer vibes.

Event Details

  • When: Saturday, December 13 & Sunday, December 14, 2025
  • Time: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. AEDT
  • Where: All across Sydney!
  • Tickets: $19 AUD for a single day, or $33 AUD for both days (with the Extra Day Add-On). Tickets are limited and non-refundable, so don’t snooze!
  • How to Buy: Head to the official City Safari website or grab your ticket in the Pokémon GO app (Main Menu → Events).

Explore Sydney with the GO Stamp Rally

The City Safari isn’t just about catching Pokémon – it’s about exploring Sydney like never before! Take part in the Pokémon GO Stamp Rally by visiting famous spots like:

  • Darling Harbour
  • Sydney City Centre
  • Royal Botanic Gardens
  • Circular Quay
  • Milsons Point
  • Manly Beach
  • Centennial Park

Spin the Photo Discs at participating PokéStops to collect up to eight unique stamps each day. Each stamp earns you an encounter with Eevee wearing an adorable explorer hat – and the stamp design changes depending on how long you “press,” so every stamp is a little different!

Special Pokémon Encounters

Sydney’s streets will be teeming with event-themed Pokémon, including Mudbray (the Donkey Pokémon), which is exclusive to City Safari 2025 events. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a Shiny Pokémon or two!

Exclusive Giveaways & Bonuses

Swing by the City Safari booth in Darling Harbour (under the Pier Street Underpass near Darling Square) to score a Pikachu sun visor – the ultimate summer accessory for Trainers on the go.

Ticket holders also get some sweet in-game bonuses:

  • 4-hour Lure Module duration (excluding Golden Lures)
  • Up to 5 Special Trades per day
  • 50% Stardust discount on trades
  • Your Buddy Pokémon might find a City Safari–exclusive Tiny Compass souvenir

Power Up Your Adventure with Add-Ons

Want to level up your experience? Add-ons are $9 AUD each and work across both days:

  • Raid Lover: Up to 12 daily Raid Passes, bonus XP, and extra Candy for raid catches
  • Egg-thusiast: 1/2 Egg Hatch Distance, double Stardust, XP, and Hatch Candy
  • Extra Day Add-On ($14 AUD): Play both days with boosted bonuses and a higher chance of finding Shiny Pokémon

How to Get Tickets

  • Open Pokémon GO, tap Main Menu → Events
  • Select Pokémon GO City Safari: Sydney
  • Choose your date, add-ons, or gift tickets to friends (must be Great Friends or higher)
  • Complete payment and keep your confirmation email handy

2023 Pokémon World Championships Drone Light Show

August 16, 2023 By ausretrogamer

Guess what went down at the 2023 Pokémon World Championships in Yokohama, Japan? Brace yourself: a spectacular drone light show featuring our beloved pocket monsters! Yep, those little critters took to the skies like they were auditioning for Pokémon’s Next Top Aviator. It was a feast for the senses, well, mostly for the eyeballs – sorry taste buds.

Hold onto your Pokéballs, because this show was a real treat. Thanks to ZoëTwoDots and their time-lapse wizardry, you can gobble up the entire dazzling display in a mere 28 seconds! No need to twiddle your thumbs for a tedious 11 minutes like the lucky folks who were actually on the scene. They say good things come to those who wait, but we say great things come to those who’ve mastered the art of fast-forward.

Gone (Adult) Toy Hunting

January 20, 2023 By ausretrogamer

Ah, let’s not kid ourselves, these aren’t exactly adult toys, but they do indeed invoke nostalgia, a yearning if you will, for us adults of a certain vintage to want raid the toy shelves of our nearest department store!

If you are lucky enough to have a BIG W near you, you may want to head in and check out the toy section, as they are stocking a myriad of toys that us Gen X’ers will go absolute bonkers over!

The toys that grabbed our attention were of course the Star Wars action figures and the Nintendo related toys. What I wasn’t expecting was the variation of Masters of the Universe stock, which also included the retro 40th anniversary line – we had to wipe our drool!

See anything that takes your fancy?

This packaging brings back memories!

The MOTU Revelation line is very tempting!

Not sure we can relate to this MOTU, but younger generations may appreciate it

Stratos ($19) versus Mer-Man ($50) – big difference

Pokemon, Minecraft and Roblox – Big W has you covered!

Cat Peach!

Our favourite Princess – we miss her so much

A dad of a Pokemon fan created an incredible real life Pokemon pinball machine!

Imagine being skilled enough to reskin an old pinball machine into an amazing Pokemon pinball machine?! Luckily for Redditor bosgetti, their father had the requisite skill set to create such a unique, customised and incredible pinball machine.

In case you were wondering, the donor EM pinball machine was a Chicago Coin Hi-Score Pool.

PS: Check out this amazing machine on imgur now!

The Pokémon Pinball DS Game That Never Was

July 28, 2021 By ausretrogamer

Since last year’s Nintendo Gigaleak, aka: Data Leak (Ed: or more accurately, hacks that lead to the leak!) that brought attention to some Pokémon source code, 3DS debug ROMs as well as the full source code for the Nintendo Wii from the BroadOn’s servers (BroadOn worked with Nintendo on the Wii hardware and software), there has been further leaks emerging in the last week.

From the many recent mouth-watering leakage news (not looking at you Wii prototype games!), the major one that grabbed our attention was the Pokemon Pinball game that was slated for a 2006 release on the DS. As massive pinball fans, this game would have been right up our alley, especially when gaming on the go with the Nintendo DS’ touch and dual screens.

Considering the original Game Boy Color title became a cult classic, this one would have been well received. The game would’ve been developed by Fuse, best known for Super Mario Ball and Metroid Prime Pinball, so we are quite sure Pokemon Pinball on the DS would have been an absolute blast!

Top 20 Best-Selling Video Game Franchises of All Time

June 29, 2021 By ausretrogamer

It is always a humbling experience when seeing these ‘best selling’ lists related to video games. This time, it is the franchises – the heavy lifters of their respective publisher’s bottom line.

No surprise who is on top, by a massive margin – Mario, Nintendo’s crown jewel. Mario has been a juggernaut franchise for decades! Any game containing the Italian plumber (formerly Jumpman) is almost a guarantee to make bank for Nintendo, from the Super Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Sports and Mario Party series, to Mario RPG! When looking at the list, Mario is in some good company with other massive Nintendo franchises, like the Wii simulation series and of course, The Legend of Zelda. The Wii series was a surprise, as we would have expected Donkey Kong or Metroid to be up there too.

Looking at the chart, you will notice a mixed bag of game franchises that started in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, with Minecraft being the sole representative for the 2010s! No wonder we keep seeing Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto games being made on new generation systems, they sell like hotcakes. Not content with being the biggest pop culture entity, Star Wars has done quite well in the video gaming realm too. Great to see Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog up there and the many sports titles we have enjoyed (and still enjoy).

See any surprises?
