Super Captain Toad Cake

September 4, 2017 By ausretrogamer

They say that you can’t have your cake and eat it too, but we say to hell with that!

Press Play On Tape podcast host and resident ausretrogamer contributor, Aaron Clement, showed us his son’s birthday cake which his awesome wife, Kel whipped up this past weekend. Kel’s Captain Toad cake was a work of art that looked too good to eat, but damn too delicious to let sit there for good looks. We may need to put in our request with Kel for our very own cool cake!

Oh yeah, just in case you didn’t know, the Press Play On Tape crew has formally joined the PAX Aus Classic Gaming Area, so we are looking forward to getting our nostalgia on with these very cool peeps!

Top of the world!

Mmmmm, M&Ms!

Oh wow, Kit Kats too!

Press Play On Tape: Atari’s 8-Bit Legacy

September 12, 2016 By Aaron Clement

pressplayontape18The tape is rewound, the counter set to zero, and that means only one thing: it’s time to Press Play on Tape! This month, Alex, Daz and Aaron are joined by Aleks ‘Serby’ Svetislav from Weird and Retro to take a look back at Atari’s 8-bit computer range. Alex runs us through Atari’s lineup, spanning from the Atari 400 to the ST-inspired 130XE, before handing over the Serby to discuss his beloved XE Games System!

After picking Llamasoft as publisher of choice for this month, the crew discuss the many weird and wonderful games they’ve given us over the years. The group also discovers that Jeff Minter’s games were responsible for them getting the Atari Jaguar, Nuon and the PS Vita!

On a more subdued note, it’s with great sadness that this episode sees co-hosts Alex and Darren leave the Press Play On Tape podcast. Both have made the difficult decision to step down from regular hosting duties in order to focus on other projects. The show will go on, but they both will be missed.

Thanks for listening and hope you enjoy this month’s episode!

This episode of Press Play On Tape along with all previous podcasts can be found on Podbean and also iTunes – we’d love it if you gave us a review while you’re there. It all helps!

Press Play On Tape: The Commodore Is Still Keeping Up With You

August 29, 2016 By Aaron Clement

PPOT17_TitleAs Commodore 64 month draws to a close, episode 17 of Press Play on Tape rolls in to prove that the Commodore is still keeping up with you! Hosts Alex and Aaron are joined by Ant Stiller and Hellfire64’s Rob Caporetto on a round-table discussion on everyone’s favourite 34 year old breadbin.

The group discusses what makes the system special to them, how they’ve been celebrating C64 month, and if there’s anything they’d ever do to change the system. There is also a look at some of the brand new releases that have caught their eye in recent times, and a few of the upcoming titles on the horizon.

The audience were challenged to come up with what game defined the Commodore 64 for them. The lads definitely weren’t ready for the overwhelming response – definitely proving that people are still keeping up with the Commodore!

This episode of Press Play On Tape along with all previous podcasts can be found on Podbean and also iTunes – we’d love it if you gave us a review while you’re there. It all helps!

Press Play On Tape: The One Where Sega Released A Computer

July 24, 2016 By Aaron Clement

PPOT_16_SegaIs it See-ga or Say-ga? This and many more interesting things are discussed as the Press Play On Tape podcast hosts take a look at that one time Sega entered the home computer market. Joined by Tim Arnold from the Retro Domination and +3 to Geekdom podcasts, the lads explore Sega’s history in the lead up to, and following the release of their SC-3000 computer.

The guys discuss the different versions of the SC-3000 and where it was released, before taking a peek under the hood to see what hardware drove it. Listen in as they talk about the accessories Sega made for their home computer – including what might be one of the most expensive floppy disk add-ons ever! It’d be a boring computer without games, and given Sega’s arcade history, there’s plenty to be discussed. The team runs through some of the games for the SC-3000, including a unique hidden gem from two of Sega’s greatest developers that you’ll only find on the SC-3000 (and SG-1000)!

This month Daz finally gets his chance to pick Activision as the publisher of choice. As the world’s first independent games publisher, Activision had a huge library of games to choose from, yet the audience still manage to pull a few out from left-field!

Regardless of how you pronounce Sega, the Press Play on Tape team won’t judge you. Hope you enjoy this month’s podcast!

Press Play On Tape: The House That Melbourne Built

June 7, 2016 By ausretrogamer

PPOT_15_HDR
The three Press Play On Tape horsemen ride into town and head straight to the house that Melbourne built. There they meet the great, Cameron “Gazunta” Davis!

As they are lead on a tour of this Melbourne House, Cam delves into his gaming past and absolutely blows away the horsemen with stories of making C64 games at age 8, badgering a TV Week editor to become a games reviewer, then the time he tested games for a living and becoming a Games Designer! Cam’s story doesn’t end there as he reveals his comic artist genius, his many published works, becoming a TV personality and finally his pièce de résistance, being the editor of the very last issue (#107) of legendary magazine, Zzap!64!

If that wasn’t enough, Cameron provides a comprehensive bio on this month’s publisher of choice, yep you guessed it, Melbourne House! Stop fiddling with the controls and press play now!

Press Play On Tape: Hitting The Reset Button

May 15, 2016 By ausretrogamer

PPOT_14_HDRAs the weather in the southern hemisphere gets cooler, the Press Play On Tape podcast heats things up with three hosts and one very special guest!

In this episode, we welcome Aaron Clement as our co-host and we sit down to have a chat with the C64-centric Reset magazine editor extraordinaire, Kevin Tilley (aka: Unkle K). We probe Unkle K about all things Reset – how the magazine came to be, its evolution, highlights, lowlights and any sneaky inside information on the upcoming issue.

For the publisher of choice, Unkle K chose Hewson Consultants, which had no shortage of classic video games! We hit the social media channels to read our your fave Hewson published games and we even have time for shoutouts, so you better listen in!

Oh yeh, Daz and Aaron even also get to speak to Paul Bridger the director and producer of the new documentary, The Amiga Works – Allister Brimble. Get the inside information on how he produced and self funded his first feature documentary.

Stay away from the reset button and press play on tape now!

Press Play On Tape: STart Me Up

April 12, 2016 By ausretrogamer

PPOT_13_HDRFinally, the great Atari 16-bit computer gets its time to shine on the PRESS PLAY ON TAPE podcast! With Maximum Power Up’s podcaster, Paul Monaghan as the special guest, Daz is outnumbered and admits defeat in the 16-bit computer battle. The cast looks back fondly at the ST and its many great games, from exclusives like Oids, to awesome arcade conversions like R-Type and the ultimate adventure RPG, Dungeon Master.

Rainbow Arts was chosen as the publisher of choice, with The Great Giana Sisters and Turrican getting lots of love from the lads. This month also saw a record number of responses for the audience question, which goes to show that there is plenty of love for Atari’s Sixteen/Thirty-two computer! So grab your Amiga mates and STart me up!
