20 Years of PlayStation: 1994 – 2014

May 13, 2022 By ausretrogamer

We say better late then never!

This 8 year old infographic by Reddit user AdiostΒ (aka: Dmitry Pankin) celebrates the PlayStation timeline from its beginnings in 1994 with the groundbreaking PS, all the way through to the PS Vita Slim in 2014 – 20 years of awesome play (well, 28 years, but who is counting)! πŸ˜‰

Handheld Emulation Battle: Anbernic RG280V vs PS Vita

January 7, 2022 By ausretrogamer

Emulation is fraught with so much controversy, sometimes for good reason. In this post, we won’t be getting into the moral discussion of emulation nor it’s comparison to playing games in their native format/system. With our recent acquisition of the Anbernic RG280V, we have been asked multiple times, is it better that the PS Vita? Well, as with any comparison, it all depends on the use cases, sprinkled with personal preferences, like playing in a vertical (RG280V) or horizontal (PS Vita) orientation, is it pocketable or does it have an OLED screen, to name just a few.

Let’s get one thing straight, we aren’t comparing apples with apples here. The PS Vita, even though it’s getting long in the tooth, is a powerful beast with an awesome OLED screen (the 1000 series), able to play and emulate everything up till the PSP, plus everything in between like the Nintendo 64, GBA and Sega’s Dreamcast. In comparison, the RG280V is able to play and emulate all your old classic 8, 16 and 32-Bit systems without any issues, including the PS1 and GBA games. So, just on sheer number of systems that can be emulated, the PS Vita wins the battle. However, be mindful that modding the Vita to play emulators isn’t for the faint of heart, so be prepared to manually configure it to make it all work properly. For what it’s worth, getting PS1 games to emulate properly on the Vita was rage inducing. The RG280V on the other hand is (almost) plug and play – just drop your games (legally obtained roms, of course) in their relevant folders and you are good to go – all configuration is set for you, including button mapping and the like. Oh yeah, the RG280V also boots up in less than 10 seconds, so you’ll be playing on it in no time compared to the boot-up sequence on the PS Vita.

We honestly love both of these handhelds, but we do find ourselves playing all the classics more often on the RG280V as it’s easier to setup and use, the D-pad, buttons (face and shoulder) and the screen (and its aspect ratio) are amazing and we absolutely love its form factor – it’s such a pocketable unit when compared to the PS Vita.

So which do you choose? Well, if you like horizontal orientation, and OLED screen and are technically inclined and don’t mind tinkering for hours on end to mod and setup the Vita, then that is the way to go. If you prefer to spend less (under AU$120), have a powerful pocketable little unit with a portrait orientation and its ease of setup and use, then the RG280V is for you – unless you have massive hands, then we’d say go for the PS Vita.

No matter which one you go with, you honestly can’t go wrong. Happy gaming peeps!

The RG280V boots up in no time when compared to the PS Vita

Ninja Five-O baby! Both systems emulate really well.

Our current favourite emulation handheld – it is rock solid

Portable Retro Emulation

July 14, 2020 By ausretrogamer

What is it about the need to β€˜hack’ handheld systems to play old school video games? Is it the challenge (to hack), is it the fact you are doing something shady or is it purely to just play your β€˜backup’ video games from gaming generations gone by?

What ever the reason, there have been a plethora of options for retro gamers to either soft or hard mod their portable beasts to play classic games. In parallel, there have been dedicated emulation handheld systems to help with your hit of nostalgia, like the GP2X, Caanoo and the latest beast, the RK2020, to name just a few.

CycloDS – the softmod hack for the Nintendo DS

We have quite a few handheld systems that we use to play our favourite retro video games,Β some emulate better than the others, but our favourite right now is the PSP for playing Mega Drive and SNES games. We have the exciting newΒ RK2020Β retro handheld coming to our office, so stay tuned for our review on that little beast πŸ™‚

WARNING: Hacking your systems is not without risk and can also void your warranty.

June 11, 2020 By ausretrogamer

There comes a time when we have to let go of things, even those we hold precious and dear in our gaming collections.

Weird and Retro’s Serby has decided to part ways with his massive PS Vita collection – and what a mouthwatering collection it is! If you are after some hard to find and precious PS Vita games or systems, then read on! Before you ask, “Why would you sell this awesome stuff?”, then all we can tell you at this stage is that Weird and Retro have a project in the works that has been a labour of love – but more on this in the future when more details are known.

Celebrating Our 8th Anniversary!

January 5, 2020 By ausretrogamer

It is amazing to think that we started ausretrogamer 8 years ago! How time flies when you are having fun!

When we started our site and social media channels in January 2012, we had no idea what was to come. We were pleasantly surprised to find so many like-minded people who enjoyed playing and talking about old games we used to play many many decades ago. Nostalgia is a powerful force that binds us all – long may it continue!

To all the people that have contributed and to those that are still contributing content and everyone that engages with us, thank you very much – you all rock our world!

Looking forward to another year full of retro gaming goodness πŸ™‚

Podcast: Vertical Hold – The Retro Gaming Special Episode

November 15, 2019 By ausretrogamer

Being invited to guest appear (or should that be speak?) on a podcast is always humbling, very cool and a bit nerve-racking. It is exceptionally cool when invited by two of our good friends, Alex Kidman and Adam Turner to come on their Vertical Hold: Behind The Tech News podcast.

Episode 254 of Vertical Hold goes all retro in the modern era, from revived Nintendo and Sega classic mini consoles, huge arcade control decks from Capcom that hook up to your TV, to questionable emulation and some iffy jailbreaking – this episode has it all!

Thanks again to Alex and Adam for having us on their podcast – we make a great triple AAA* team!

Ripping It Up On Tearaway

December 5, 2013 By ausretrogamer

Tearaway

This is going to be a blasphemous post. If you are scratching your head and wondering why, then let me explain – this site is usually reserved for classic gaming or anything that brings back that intoxicating allure of nostalgia.

Well this time around, this retro gamer has been squarely whacked in the chin with a game that cannot be put down. The game I speak of is none other than the sublime Tearaway. Up until a week ago, my PS Vita sat idly on my desk totally unloved. It is amazing what a week in gaming can do – the Vita now enjoys an abundance of attention and Tearaway has a lot to do with it.

Tearaway is one awesomely imaginative game. It takes a paper aesthetic and uses it as a launching pad for inventive ideas and player creativity. The interactivity within the Tearaway world is a joy to behold – from dispatching scraps (enemies) by piercing the ground beneath them with your fingers, to creating papercraft designs to integrate into the environment. It is absorbing like a dry sponge sucking up water!

Tearaway is a purely addictive adventure 3D platforming puzzle solving game that utilises the PS Vita’s functions perfectly. If you were looking for an excuse to buy a PS Vita, this may be it.

Console War: 3DS vs PS Vita

July 9, 2013 By ausretrogamer

3dsVSPSV_1

Finally, we are privy to the conversation between Nintendo’s 3DS and Sony’s PS Vita. So what is the conversation about? Let’s just say that the poor little PS Vita is after some friendly advice from the 3DS. This may start a Nintendo vs Sony war!
