Every Single Nintendo Game From 1985-2000

February 27, 2024 By ausretrogamer

We know this is now old news (over 5 years ago), but for those that missed Aaron Norton’s (aka: NintendoTwizer) Nintendo collection, check it out!

Unfortunately (or fortunately for) Aaron, he sold it all for US$164,000 (approx. AU$250,000), which some say is a pittance, considering the complete collections of NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy and GameCube games!

Anyway, we are glad that Aaron did one last tour of his collection before it was sold – WARNING: You may drool!

Pokémon Pinball Machine – It’s For Real

September 18, 2022 By ausretrogamer

A dad of a Pokemon fan created an incredible real life Pokemon pinball machine!

Imagine being skilled enough to reskin an old pinball machine into an amazing Pokemon pinball machine?! Luckily for Redditor bosgetti, their father had the requisite skill set to create such a unique, customised and incredible pinball machine.

In case you were wondering, the donor EM pinball machine was a Chicago Coin Hi-Score Pool.

PS: Check out this amazing machine on imgur now!

An Alternative 80s iPhone

June 30, 2022 By ausretrogamer

Now this alternative-history 80s iPhone by Redditor, Echonix9, is so darn clever!

But alas, it is only a prop! Don’t despair, we can still enjoy in imagining having such a device in the 80s. Echonix9 also added a light-pen peripheral, with Redditor Danamania going a step further by adding an old school green on black display (see below pic)!

Echonix9 advises that:

This took about 4 weeks to make from modelboard and laser cut acrylic. Apparently it looks like a render which I can only take as a compliment!

The display is vacuum-formed acrylic, though I essentially let the soft plastic droop into the shape of the screen. I then back-sprayed it with grey and a little silver.

I first created a CAD model in Rhino, using the rough overall dimensions of a pocket TV I have. This allowed me to print off scale plans and have the front panel cut from modelboard with a CNC machine.

With the 3D model I could also laser-cut the back and sides from acrylic, with icons and holes for sockets. There was a lot of filling and hand-sanding to get it smooth and the corners just right!

Details like the aerial, db9 socket and power switch on the opposite side were bits from my electronic stash.

I’m simplifying what is quite a unconventional method of making something like this, especially considering I have a model I could just 3D print, but I learnt a huge amount by giving it a go, making mistakes and taking advantage of the equipment I won’t always have access to, outside of education.

This Myki Reader is DOOMed

May 11, 2020 By ausretrogamer

So that’s what happened to our tram’s Myki card reader – it got turned into a DOOM playing machine!

Got Doom working on a ticket validator (myki) from r/itrunsdoom

To be honest, it is a better use of a Myki public transport terminal. Who would have thought that the classic FPS could run on such a device!

Well done to reddit user zbios for hacking the Windows CE based Myki system to run the classic shooter we all know and love!

DOOM on baby!

Retro Gaming Graffiti

January 31, 2020 By ausretrogamer

Let’s start by saying we don’t condone illegal graffiti. However, when graffiti is welcomed as street art and makes a societal impact, we definitely take note.

The /r/Graffiti Reddit thread is one place that is full of great graffiti, some topical with recent events, and some tugging on our nostalgic heartstrings.

Here are a few that caught our eye, even the freight train carriage with the three-button NES controller! Check out the rest on Reddit.

Get Your Keyboard To Match Your Original Game Boy

November 14, 2018 By ausretrogamer

In my mind’s eye, if I imagined a Game Boy type keyboard I could use on my computer, it would definitely not look as cool as this creation by The Key Company!

The iconic look of the original Game Boy, with its white, navy, maroon and black colour scheme oozes cool Nintendo late 80s aesthetics which would look pretty awesome on other devices, like keyboards! The Key Company is currently running a group buy for their GMK DMG key-set, which is based on, surprise surprise, Nintendo’s iconic handheld. The GMK DMG key-set was designed by Reddit user Futurecrime, with colour matching being professionally done by German industrial equipment maker GMK to directly match Nintendo’s Game Boy colour scheme.

The Base kit, which is USD$169, includes 150 keys designed to cover a majority of keyboards sporting Cherry MX-compatible stems. Pull off one of your normal keys, and if there is a plus (+) sign shaped plastic peg underneath, they’ll fit. The base kit includes some super cute novelty keys sporting Game Boy button graphics, along with a set of direction keys in black with grey stripes.

There are cheaper kits, like the Pocket kit, which costs USD$48 – it comes with keys to fill in some of the more popular smaller keyboard layouts. There is also a $22 Spacebars kit which contains various sizes of space bars in the Game Boy maroon colour.

So if you are into the original Game Boy and want to pair up its colour scheme with a device you use often, like your keyboard, then check out the GMK DMG group buy at The Key Company site for more details. If you prefer to wait for the key-sets to hit the streets (Reddit’s Mechmarket), then diarise April 2019 right now!
