Barrels of Fun Unveils Epic Second Pinball Game: Dune Pinball

April 15, 2025 By ausretrogamer

Barrels of Fun, the boutique pinball manufacturer behind the acclaimed Labyrinth machine, has officially unveiled its second release: a pinball adaptation of the iconic sci-fi franchise Dune. The announcement confirms long-standing rumors and marks a significant expansion for the Houston-based company.

The Dune pinball machine draws inspiration from the expansive universe of Frank Herbert’s novels and their cinematic adaptations. While specific gameplay features have yet to be detailed, the machine is expected to capture the essence of the Dune saga, immersing players in its rich narrative and distinctive aesthetics.

Pre-orders for the Dune pinball machine are now open through authorised distributors, with pricing at USD$11,600, this is an increase of USD$1K over their maiden pinball game (AUD $21,990). The machine is available in multiple editions, each offering unique features and artwork to cater to collectors and enthusiasts alike.

With the Dune pinball machine, Barrels of Fun continues to solidify its reputation for creating immersive, story-driven pinball experiences. Fans and collectors eagerly await further details and the opportunity to explore the sands of Arrakis through this new interactive medium.

For more information and to place a pre-order, visit the Barrels of Fun official website.

October 7, 2019 By ausretrogamer

If you needed a reason to head to Chicago for Pinball Expo 2019, well this may be the reason!

Troy Smith (MTZ Arcade) will have his ultra super duper rare (High End Pins (HEP) restored!) KRULL pinball machine (based on the 80s sci-fi cult film) at his booth for attendees to drool over.

Blast Some Xenomorphs in Alien Pinball

January 30, 2018 By ausretrogamer

Back in March 2017 we were going gaga over Heighway Pinball’s Alien machine. Fast forward almost a year and a lot has changed. We won’t go into specifics of the company upheaval from last year, but rest assured that the new Heighway owners weren’t going to let this important IP go to waste.

Eerie glowing egg bumpers and the Xenomorph waiting to snatch your ball!

We are finally seeing more and more Alien machines reaching their customers and hitting barcades across North America. We are hoping Australian establishments site this cool machine ASAP! We definitely want to wage a flippin war against the Xenomorphs, so we may need to visit Wayne at Mr Pinball, the Australian distributor of Heighway’s highly anticipated machine, in the very near future to get our Alien fix.

Choose your mission, Alien or Aliens and watch out for those pesky facehuggers!

Alien Pinball is an absolute treat for fans of the first two films of the classic sci-fi horror series. From the facehugger slingshots, glowing egg bumpers and the scary Xenomorph head that snatches balls from the playfield, it’s up to you, the pinball wizard, to complete the two sets of missions (there are five missions in each set) to reach the ‘All Out War’ multiball wizard mode.

Just like Ellen Ripley, the fate of the universe rests in your hands, so search and clear all decks, watch for the proximity alert, avoid the acid burn and before you yell “game over, man!” just remember, in space no one can hear you tilt!

Steven Spielberg To Direct ‘Ready Player One’

March 27, 2015 By Ms. ausretrogamer

spielberg plus cover

Deadline have reported Steven Spielberg is set to direct the film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s sci-fi bestseller Ready Player One (Random House Crown, 2011). If you haven’t read the book yet, check out diaf23’s review here.

Ready Player One Cover

Ready Player One is expected to follow Spielberg’s The BFG. Interestingly, this will be his first film with Warner Bros. since A.I. Artificial Intelligence in 2001.

Apparently the two biggest hurdles will be acquiring the rights to the myriads of pop culture references and finding the technology to bring Ready Player One’s virtual world to life. It will be very interesting to see which references do and do not end up in the movie.

With The BFG due for release in 2016, you still have plenty of time to read (or re-familiarise yourself with) the book – so get reading!
