Thinking back to the 1999 Christmas season, we were still playing our Nintendo 64 quite a lot, but we were saving up frantically for a Sega Dreamcast. Star Wars games featured prominently in December 1999, but after the massive disappointment of The Phantom Menace prequel released earlier that same year, we steered clear of these games as a matter of protest. It was our loss, as some of these new Star Wars games on the 32-bit and 64-bit platforms were absolute crackers! Other notable games that we loved playing around that time were Driver and Soul Reaver on the Playstation.
Casting an eye over the top 5 December 1999 games charts for each platform, we were mostly looking forward to slicing and dicing in SoulCalibur and shooting zombies in House Of The Dead 2 on Sega’s Dreamcast!

Rewind the clock 18 years to December 1997 and take a gander at what the top games were on the Saturn, Playstation and PC. Surprised? Well, you shouldn’t be. The Christmas games charts were always a great barometer of the types of games that we were going to see more of in the coming new year. Suffice to say, the iterative annual sports titles (your FIFAs and Maddens), including driving games (Formula 1), were always going to play their part in the charts.

While some of us were bopping to the Spice Girls‘ “Who Do You Think You Are” and No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak”, others were busying themselves playing some absolute classic games on their console of choice.
The start of September in 1997 was tinged with sadness with the passing of Mother Teresa and the funeral of Diana, Princess Of Wales. With Elton John’s Candle In The Wind song topping the music charts, we were also introduced to another hit song, Tubthumping from Chumbawaba. In the video gaming sphere, Electronic Arts was pervading the top 5 games charts on a number of platforms, from the PlayStation and Saturn, to the ubiquitous personal computer.
