Parasol Stars Is Coming To Modern Consoles

June 14, 2024 By ausretrogamer

🌈The Iconic Sequel To Rainbow Islands Is Coming To Modern Consoles on July 11th!

In 1991, TAITO released the third entry in its enduring Bubble Bobble series: Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III. It quickly became a hit, later being ported to Atari ST, Amiga, Game Boy, and even NES, gaining huge popularity and its own dedicated fandom.

Some thirty-three years later, this iconic platformer is ready to land on modern consoles on July 11th for only €9.99 and can be pre-ordered for Nintendo Switch as of now. Xbox pre-orders will start on 19.06.2024. Both offers an additional 10% pre-order bonus until release! Hurry up! PlayStation®4/PlayStation®5 versions will also be out on the 11th of July 2024.

Game Features:

  • An enigmatic ensemble of enemies, each with unique abilities (and charm);
  • 2-player mode: double the fun with Bubby and Bobby!
  • Dazzling parasols with magical powers;
  • Power-ups galore;
  • 8 worlds to save, plus 2 unlockable ones!

And some quality-of-life options, such as save states and the ability to rewind gameplay – woohoo!

‘Darkman’ on Game Boy

November 6, 2023 By David Cutler

Every Soul Has A Dark Side!

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

When I was a kid, I really enjoyed playing “Darkman” on my Nintendo Game Boy. I saw the Sam Raimi film in a theater, and when I saw that Game Boy was coming out with a game based on the movie, I had to have it.

The gameplay of “Darkman” on Game Boy was basically “Double Dragon” and “Double Dragon 2.” It was a simple multi-level game where you had to accomplish a different mission in each stage. In a lot of ways, “Darkman” was fun to me because I loved playing “Double Dragon.” The game does import many of the 1990 film’s highlights. The Raimi film was not a huge financial success, but now it has a bit of a cult following on physical media and streaming.

When teachers weren’t snatching my Game Boy out of my hands, I played the game at school. I would play “Darkman” on the school bus home. Sometimes, when I was really into the game, I would miss my stop. “Darkman” was one of my favorite games to play on my Game Boy. And there were a lot of film adaptations on Game Boy. Around that time, I also liked playing the “Hudson Hawk” film adaptation on my Game Boy.

I watched “Darkman” several days ago; I hadn’t watched it in years. I had forgotten how hooky some of the action sequences were. I still had a good time watching it again, but I was surprised by how much slapstick humor was in it. The cast is spectacular. Liam Neeson and Francis McDormand are terrific in the film. They’re so young. Larry Drake is excellent as Robert Durant, the ruthless mobster who leaves Peyton Westlake (who becomes Darkman) for dead. He overacts a little, but he’s very threatening and he has a short fuse. The film feels more like an old 1950s horror film than a comic book movie. Liam Neeson’s make-up as Darkman is gruesome and fantastic. It’s so good it’s distracting during some of the more dramatic scenes. But most of his face is covered with rags throughout the film, giving off an “Invisible Man” vibe.

I wonder if any gaming studio has ever considered making a new “Darkman” game. Sam Raimi would probably have to give his blessing for that. It could be thrilling if it’s a single-player game with an interesting narrative and cool villains.

For those of us with children of a certain age, there is no doubt that you would have come across the awesome Bluey cartoon on ABC TV (iView).

We have now marked November 17, 2023 in our diary, as this will be a day one acquisition for us (on probably every format available!)!

Hodder in the New ‘Chain Saw’ Game

August 9, 2023 By David Cutler

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

I’ve never been a huge fan of “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” movie franchise. I found the old ones too scary to watch when I was little, and the dreadful remakes and reboots were forgettable. I quickly erased them from my memory banks right after I watched them. The one with Jessica Beal was dreadful.

When I read about the upcoming video game in the latest issue of “Fangoria Magazine,” I thought the article was fascinating. The new game, developed by Gun in association with Sumo Nottingham, recreates the 1974 film and expands on that world. There are several maps you can play, and the detail is supposed to be stellar.

One of the big things that sold me on the game, that has an August 18 release date, was a single line that I read in “Fangoria”: Kane Hodder as Leatherface. I’ve been a Kane Hodder fan since watching him play Jason Voorhees in “Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood.” He really made the role his own as Jason in “Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.” In that sequel, Hodder gave Jason a certain flavor with his distinguished movements and traits. Hodder’s depiction of Jason in “Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday” was the best thing about that awful movie.

I’m curious to see what Hodder does with Leatherface, another iconic horror character. I’m a fan of the slasher film “Hatchet,” the project that Hodder did after playing Jason. It’s over-the-top, but a lot of fun. Hodder wears more prosthetics in the “Hatchet” series, but he doesn’t go through the motions, he’s a real character as Victor Crowley.

I’m still not sure why Hodder didn’t get to play Jason in “Freddy vs. Jason.” Who at New Line Cinema thought that was a wise decision? Jason seemed more cartoonish in that 2003 film. Hodder had a distinctive way of playing the iconic character that the actor who replaced him couldn’t replicate. The way Hodder slightly tilted his head and walked with a calm pace as Jason was always terrifying. The Jason in “Freddy vs. Jason” seemed like he lumbered around throughout the movie.

I may wait a few weeks before I buy “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” game. It looks good, but not being a big “Chain Saw” enthusiast, I’ll probably wait to hear what other gamers think about it.

Jirard Bought EVERY Nintendo Wii U & 3DS Game Before the Nintendo eShop Closes

March 23, 2023 By ausretrogamer

Jirard “The Completionist” Khalil has spent a smidgen under US$23,000 (~ AU$34,300) buying EVERY available Wii U and 3DS game before Nintendo shutters these respective eShops at the end of this month (March 2023).

This is definitely one way to preserve games, but let’s face it, we don’t all have tens of thousands of extra dollars sitting around, waiting to be used to buy up every game for these now deprecated Nintendo systems. We can’t even imagine the storage required to save and store all of these games – that’s a lot of microSD cards and solid-state drives!

Jirard should be commended, as he could have easily chosen the dark path, piracy, to achieve a similar result.

Completionist by name, completionist by nature, we salute you Jirard!

PS: When you are done watching the vid, read Kelsey Lewin’s Twitter thread on how this could solve the whole “preservation of games” puzzle.

The Legend Of Zelda Reimagined As A FPS DOOM VR Game

January 17, 2023 By ausretrogamer

Imagine the original The Legend Of Zelda being played in the first-person perspective like Wolfenstein or DOOM, in VR!

Imagine no more, as the below video shows a re-imagining of the NES classic, The Legend of Zelda, as a first-person virtual reality game! This impressive mod works with QuestZDoom, so we can finally becomes fans of playing The Legend of Zelda in this perspective (unless the VR makes us queasy!!).

We hope this video stays up. If it is gone by the time you get here, then know that Nintendo has meddled and killed off creativity!

Idris Elba in ‘Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty’

December 20, 2022 By David Cutler

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

The most exciting moment for me during The Game Awards 2022 was the reveal of Idris Elba playing a new character in “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.”

Idris Elba is one of my favorite actors. Watching him on the award show address gamers about his “Cyberpunk 2077” role was a surprising breath of fresh air. If Elba puts as much passion and skill into his role in the game as he does in his film work, fans of the game are in for a treat.

Elba is perfect for the hit spy-thriller. He will play a character named Solomon Reed. Reed is a veteran New United States of America agent, and a character players can trust to help them achieve an impossible mission of espionage. The teaser didn’t show much, but the graphics looked incredible.

Elba’s performance in his last two films, “Beast” and “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” were excellent. “Beast” was sort of brushed off by critics for being a generic, creature attack film, but I found the film entertaining. There were moments of real tension and terror that were heightened by Elba’s exceptional, hopeful performance.

Elba never gives a bad performance. I first discovered his talent on the HBO series “The Wire.” He was terrific as the cunning antagonist Stringer Bell. He was authentic as Bell, and he was enthralling every time he was in a scene.

He was also great in Guy Ritchie’s “RocknRolla” with Gerald Butler and Tom Hardy. He’s a talented character actor who moonlights as an action star as well.

I’m curious to see what Idris Elba brings to “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.” Understated or over-the-top, he’ll bring something unique to the franchise.

Construction Simulator – Review

October 10, 2022 By ausretrogamer

We’ll be upfront, we haven’t played a ‘sim’ video game in a long long time, especially one like this one!

Our expectations in playing Construction Simulator (CS) on our Xbox Series S was coming off a low base. We honestly didn’t know what to expect, and weren’t thinking about getting hooked on such a game. Well, we didn’t have to wonder for too long, as we found Construction Simulator such a breath of fresh air compared to the plethora of other genres we’ve been playing lately. We even managed to drain our controller, which left our construction crew and company perilously close to failure, that’s how darn good this game is – it makes you care and take responsibility for the success of your construction empire.

30 million Construction Sim fans can’t be wrong in loving this series, so better make that 30 million + 1 now. Aastragon Entertainment and Weltenbauer have ensured the player could build (pun fully intended!) a construction empire on a myriad of gaming systems, from the PC, PlayStation®4, PlayStation®5, to the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. CS includes a co-op multiplayer for up to four players, the largest fleet of vehicles in the history of the series and numerous new and once again significantly expanded features in a completely revised, modern look. Coming in new to this series, we have to say, it’s been a pleasant surprise.

Will you become the next Multiplex or Lendlease? Or will you become a Grocon, where you start off all high and mighty, only to go down the building gurgler – your destiny is literally in your hands. Where else could we realise our childhood dreams of becoming a builder or using an excavator – thankfully, CS offers this in the comfort of our lounge room!

The extensive list of licensed vehicles, machines and equipment from the top manufacturing brands is quite impressive, as are the huge maps across Europe and the US with different and challenging campaigns featuring 90 jobs! It’s not just pure building, this is an all encompassing simulator, including maintaining your construction yard, refuelling and vehicle maintenance and renting construction gear from your dealer, just to name a few. We can’t really compare to real life as we aren’t in the industry, but the publisher assures us that the earthmoving systems and driving physics have all been revamped, making them very close to lifelike – which is great to know.

We’d go so far as to say that Construction Simulator is our fave ‘sim’ for 2022 so far! We have no doubt the 4-player co-op multiplayer mode would be even more fun than the solo campaigns, but nevetheless, this game is the complete package, no matter how you play it! Go and build and have some fun!
