PAC-WOR: A Pac-Man & Wizard of Wor Mashup For The C64

February 24, 2022 By ausretrogamer

What do you get when you cross the two classic arcade titles, Pac-Man and Wizard of Wor? Give up? You get PAC-WOR!

If you are a fan of Pac-Man or Wizard of Wor (or both), this Commodore 64 mash-up by Krissz will be right up your alley. The mix of gameplay is closer to Pac-Man than Wizard of Wor, but that just makes it more exciting and devilishly harder. Playing as Pac-Man (Pacwor) means you can’t shoot the Burwors/Garwors/Throwors, instead you have one power pill (poWOR) per dungeon which enables Pacwor to chew these evildoers within a limited time frame. Clearing the dungeons is usual Pac-Man fare, eat all the pills!

This is a cool mashup which we like, but we just wish there was more than one power pill per dungeon, especially in the latter ones where the Burwors and their evil mates speed up their movements!

Download and play Pac-Wor for free via CSDB.

Our Favourite Retro Games on the Pico-8

February 1, 2021 By ausretrogamer

There are a heap of great Pico-8 games out there, but for those of you yearning for a hit of nostalgia on the fantasy console, you may find it difficult to find that classic 80s game you enjoyed in the arcade amongst the plethora of available Pico-8 games.

Well, we are here to help you find a few needles in the massive haystack of Pico-8 games that will help with your hunger for nostalgia. Get your Pico-8 ready, and start favouriting these games:

Wizard Rule: If it’s Wizard of Wor you are after, then this port is absolutely amazing. We can’t stop playing it!

Galactic Wars: Um, it’s Galaga, and it’s awesome.

Pico Tetris: As if it wasn’t addictive enough on the Game Boy, this version is just as addictive.

Pico Sprint: A suped up version of Super Sprint on the Pico-8, need we say more?

Pico Frogger: Leap onto the highway and avoid the cars and other obstacles to reach the other side. The iconic arcade game is superb on Pico-8. If in case this Frogger version doesn’t feel right, then check out Minionsoft’s Frogger.

Bomb’n Picoman: eliminating your enemies by placing bombs strategically, just like Bomberman, it’s darn enjoyable.

Sonic 2.5:  Don’t be thrown off by the .5, there is nothing half about this version of Sonic The Hedgehog. This is a work of art and has the speed to match.

MOTU: If you liked Palace Software’s head-chopping Barbarian game, then this version with Masters of The Universe characters takes it to a new and cooler level.

Super Mario Bros: How can we have a list without the little Italian plumber? Easy, we add him here as SMB is cool to play on any device.

Gaplus – Galaga Edition: There is nothing Galaga about this side-scrolling shoot’em up, but that’s not to say it is bad. If you like games like Salamander or R-Type, then this game is for you!

Bubble Bobble: The cutest dinos, Bub and Bob, are back and still as awesome as ever. This game never gets old -on any platform!

Minionsoft Scramble: The Minionsoft treatment is fantastic on this classic arcade game!

NOTE: Most games are available via the official PICO-8 site, while others can be found via itch.io.

Well, there you have it, a list of a few classic old games (and some not so old) to play on the Pico-8 that will satisfy any retro gamers’ nostalgia yearnings. Enjoy!

Monsters of Terror: The Best Wizard of Wor Clone on the Amiga!

January 21, 2021 By ausretrogamer

Everyone knows by now that we love all things Star Wars, Double Dragon, Galaga and pinball, amongst many others. However, not many know that we have another love called Wizard of Wor!

We keep going back to playing Wizard of Wor on the Commodore 64, because it’s just so jolly fun and a cracking arcade conversion. Since there was never an official Wizard of Wor game released on the Amiga, lots of peeps missed out on playing a great game (Ed: unless they kept their C64 to play it on)! But don’t fret too much, as there is a top notch clone of Wizard of Wor for the Amiga, called Monsters of Terror, created by the super talented Matthias Bock (aka: flurrycow/lazycow).

Do yourself a favour, grab this game now, as it’s darn awesome!

Ausretrogamer Fun Factory – Number 1 for Fun

November 16, 2018 By ausretrogamer

After one helluva gruelling week, we are glad to be in the Ausretrogamer Fun Factory!

We always feel at ease and relaxed when we are inside of our Fun Factory. We can sit here and pick an item to stare at (even a joystick!) and we immediately get flooded with nostalgic memories. Sometimes we may even turn something on to play.

For today, we are just enjoying the view and letting the nostalgia wash over us. Hang on, that didn’t last long, we have a hankering to play some Amiga games on the CDTV! And perhaps pinball to finish up…….

Wizard Of Wor: The Flip R’Cade Board Game

March 29, 2016 By ausretrogamer

WoW_Box_TitleAh Wizard Of Wor, that otherworldly labyrinth duel that was the ultimate showdown against evildoers. What was there not to like about this arcade game – you got to prowl a maze-like dungeon teeming with Worlings, Worluks and other evil minions of the titular sorcerer either in cooperation with or against a friend – choosing the latter always had the risk of ending a perfectly good friendship. We loved the arcade game (and its many home conversions) so much, that we gave it a healthy review score of 92%.

Wow_conversions

Many of you are well aware of the classic video game, but did you know that there was a Wizard Of Wor board game? If you answered no, then look around at the photos strewn in this piece and wonder no more – the board game replicates the video game (to a certain degree). Instead of using a joystick to move your Worrior on a screen, you use the Flip R’Cade Game flipper-shooter to either shoot or advance your plastic game piece(s) around the maze on the board.

WoW_Box_Rear

If you are struggling to grasp how this game is played, here is our quick overview: you play with two players – player one assumes the role of the Worriors and player two the Worlings and Wizards. Don’t stress about this, as the players reverse their roles to complete the game. Anyway, the objective of the player controlling the Worriors is to destroy as many of their opponent’s Worlings and Wizards before their Worriors are destroyed (by either landing on a Worling or Wizard, or being shot by a Wizard), while the player controlling the Worlings and Wizards tries to destroy all four (4) Worriors of their opponent while protecting their Worlings and Wizards from destruction. Clear as mud? Argh, that’s what instructions are for!

While there is no two player co-op in this board game, rest assured, you will get a lot of pleasure beating your opponent on points. Oh yeah, and unlike the video game version of Wizard Of Wor, the board game definitely requires two players to get the maximum fun out of playing it!

The calm before the storm! Let’s assemble!

The Wizard Files

May 25, 2015 By ausretrogamer

Wizards_HDRWhat’s up with wizards in video games – why do they wear those hooded robes and why must they have long white beards? Well, most of them do. I guess I would have to be into sorcery stuff to know such things *wink*.

My first interaction with a wizard in a video game was in Wizard of Wor. The evil wizard was one scary dude – with his face hidden under his blue hood, he would move swiftly about the dungeons, taunting you to shoot him. The satisfaction when you got him was overwhelming, but the disappointment was just as intense if he escaped. Damn wizard!

Wizards have featured in many video games, some were good and others were evil. Some wizards were even awesome characters you could select – just like Merlin in Gauntlet! Here are a few famous (or infamous) wizards that you may have played as or against, in a video game. Who were your favourites?

 Wizard_Merlin Wizard: Merlin

Game: Gauntlet

Comment: “Wizard needs food – badly!” – Merlin was always a popular character choice in Gauntlet.

 Wizard_wizball Wizard: Wiz

Game: Wizball

Comment: Not your conventional wizard, but Wiz was most definitely dabbling in wizardry. Wiz even had a feline companion, Nifta!

 Wizard_Wor Wizard: Wizard of Wor

Game: Wizard of Wor

Comment: The titular evil wizard that lurks in the dungeon and taunts you to shoot him before he escapes through the side exits, is one shifty dude.

 Wizards_Chaos Wizard: Wizard 1

Game: Chaos: The Battle of Wizards

Comment: Wizard 1 battles it out till the death. Last wizard standing, wins!

 Wizard_Axil Wizard: Axil The Able

Game: Heavy On The Magick

Comment: The neophyte wizard Axil has a few magic tricks up his generously big sleeves. Those goblins, vampires and wyverns don’t stand a chance.

 Wizards_TheWizard Wizard: The Wizard

Game: Atic Atac

Comment: Do you want to swing an axe, a sword or cast awesome spells? That’s easy, casting spells is always damn cool.

 Wizards_Sabreman Wizard: Sabreman

Game: Pentagram

Comment: Your typical wizard with a pointy hat, beard and dapper robe, sets out on a quest to resurrect a mystical pentagram. Oooooooooo!

 Wizard_Sorcery Wizard: Sorcerer

Game: Sorcery

Comment: Travel from your home in Stonehenge to free the enslaved and save your three wizard mates from the Necromancer. It is all up to the Sorcerer!
