A Case for a Joe Louis Video Game

October 11, 2022 By David Cutler

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

Why has there never been a Joe Louis video game? Buster Douglas has his own video game and his only rise to fame was being the first boxer to defeat Mike Tyson.

You could play as Joe Louis in Entertainment Art’s “Knockout Kings.” And the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 “Fight Night Champion” gave you the option of fighting as Louis as well. Both are exceptional boxing games. On so many nights in college, I played “Knockout Kings” until 2 a.m. with my friends.

Many young people don’t know how dominate Joe Louis was throughout his career. The “Brown Bomber” had a lifetime boxing record of 66-3. He has the longest single reign as champion of any boxer in history; from 1937 to 1949. There should be a video game centred around Louis for that long reign as champion alone. People under thirty know his name, but do they know how exceptional he was in his boxing prime?

One of the worst sports films I ever watched was “The Joe Louis Story.” The 1953 film was a turkey of a biopic on Louis’ life.

It has a horribly acted, cheesy opening where a depressed sportswriter is sitting at his desk and he cradles up to his typewriter and says, “I’ll write the real story.” He does an atrocious job narrating the film.

Coley Wallace, who plays Joe Louis, smiles a lot throughout the film. He is unprofessional and his delivery of dialogue sounds like he memorized it just before the cameras started rolling. He may’ve been cast just because he resembles Louis; it certainly wasn’t for his acting chops. There are moments during the film when it appears Wallace doesn’t know where his mark is. It’s awkward. You would think a producer or studio executive would’ve noticed that while watching a final cut?

The boxing scenes are not well crafted, choreographed violence like in “Raging Bull” and “Creed,” they’re documentary-like footage of Joe Louis’ fights. I guess that’s because the film had a small budget. It totally takes you out of the narrative of the film; a narrative that is already weak and unsteady.

In the middle of the movie, there is also a strange musical number that takes place in a nightclub that comes out of left field. It’s so kitschy; it makes you wonder if someone on the production owed the singer a favour.

There was nothing boring about the “Brown Bomber’s” life. We need a great video game and film about the Detroit native’s life.

Turn Your Xbox Series X|S Into A Legit Emulation Powerhouse

August 4, 2022 By ausretrogamer

PLEASE NOTE: This is now an outdated post and it’s instructions SHOULD NOT be followed or used!

Say what? Yep, you read that title properly, you can legitimately download and install emulation open source apps from the Microsoft Store for your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S consoles!

Sick of setting up emulation on multiple devices? Do you want to centralise all your gaming, both modern and retro, on the one console? If you have an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, this is now a reality!

PLEASE NOTE: This is now an outdated post and it’s instructions SHOULD NOT be followed or used!

Thanks to gamr13 and the rest of the clever dev community, the process to turn your Xbox into an emulation beast is simpler and does not need any funky bypassing with whitelisting, going into dev mode or other illegitimate modifications.

PLEASE NOTE: This is now an outdated post and it’s instructions SHOULD NOT be followed or used!

If you have an Xbox One, you can play everything from the 8-bit era all the way up to the 32-bit consoles, like the PS1. If you are part of the crowd that has an Xbox Series X|S then you can play old school games from the dawn of video gaming all the way up to the Dreamcast, GameCube/Wii, PS2 (limited) and PSP! You’re basically making your Xbox console into a RetroPie killer!! Woohoo, we can finally play Virtua Tennis 3 (PSP) on our Xbox Series S!!!

PLEASE NOTE: This is now an outdated post and it’s instructions SHOULD NOT be followed or used!

We know what you are thinking, how complicated is it? Do you have to fiddle with controller configuration? Well, it actually isn’t complicated at all and the controller configs are done for you – even we were able to get it setup in less than 15 minutes – obviously this depends on how many retro games you have – which we will not discuss here.

PLEASE NOTE: This is now an outdated post and it’s instructions SHOULD NOT be followed or used!

Instructions:

  1. Fire up your Xbox Series S or X;
  2. Go to https://gamr13.github.io using the Edge browser on the Xbox and on the GAMR13’S APPSTORE tile, click the Download App button;
  3. In the Microsoft Store, click on the Get button, followed by the Got It button;
  4. Quit out of the Edge browser;
  5. Open Gamr13’s </> AppStore from your dashboard;
  6. Install the emulator(s), tools and games you want from the AppStore; then quit;
    1. NOTE: RetriX is a great front-end if you prefer it to RetroArch
  7. Use the Durango FTP app to copy/transfer over the required BIOS files and game files (roms) – obviously we won’t link these here as you should legally own these files.
    1. NOTE: If you prefer, and we highly recommend it, use an external drive (256GB USB-3 stick) to host your required files (BIOS, games etc).
  8. You are all done! Enjoy your nostalgia!

Oh yeah, if you are having troubles playing your PS1 or PSP games in RetroArch, then check out the DuckStation or PPSSPP Gold standalone apps respectively. DuckStation has the added benefit of upscaling PS1 games to 1080p at 60fps, making PS1 games look absolutely amazing. The standalone FlyCast emulator works great for Dreamcast, just in case you can’t get your DC games going on RetroArch.

PLEASE NOTE: This is now an outdated post and it’s instructions SHOULD NOT be followed or used!

If you prefer video instructions, then you can follow gamr13’s tutorial here.

RetroArch setup

RetriX Setup

NOTE: This post is informational only. The reader accepts all risk and responsibility in installing and configuring any of the applications/tools/emulators mentioned in this article. These are all open source retail apps available on the Microsoft Store.

PLEASE NOTE: This is now an outdated post and it’s instructions SHOULD NOT be followed or used!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge – Review

June 22, 2022 By ausretrogamer

Cowabunga! Sorry, we really had to start with that!

How good do we beat’em up fans have it right now? Both Final Vendetta and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge get released within a day of one another. The last time we had it this good, I had a mullet and the singing budgie, Kylie Minogue, was killin’ it with her Stock Aitken Waterman hits. Oh yeah, and we are late doing this review because this game is deliciously addictive, just like a capricciosa pizza (minus the anchovies)!

You’ve probably read (or watched) a ton of reviews about this game already, so we honestly don’t know what else to say that hasn’t already been said – if you are into scrolling beat’em ups (playing solo or co-op), then adding TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge to your games library is a no-brainer, GET IT RIGHT NOW!

source: DotEmu

For those that need an extra push that are asking, how darn good is this game, well let us tell ya! We played Final Vendetta before Shredder’s Revenge and called it the beat’em up genre’s magnum opus (it’s darn good), but we honestly reckon Shredder’s Revenge is just as good (if not better!). The main pull for us is the fact that this game oozes nostalgia with its beautiful full-colour pixel visuals, aural (yay Tee Lopes!) and play mechanics by transporting us back to early 1990 in the video rental store where we first played the 4P Konami arcade game which totally blew our mind. Shredder’s Revenge has blown our mind too! Obviously it is a step above the original arcade with ample levels that are choc-full of foot clan baddies to smash with satisfying moves, attacks and brutal combos – there are 21 in total. Some moves do consume your Ninja Power bar, so you have to be strategic when to use it. Being TMNT, there is also a radical mode (basically god mode) that can be unlocked to mow down everyone on screen. Oh yeah, you can also taunt your enemies before you unleash your fist of fury. Did we also mention that you can play with up to six players simultaneously? No? Well, we have now – it’s just so gnarly! What else can we tell you about this game that no one has said already? It’s so bodacious!

We love the fact that you can play Shredder’s Revenge in Story or Arcade mode, with the latter basically giving the player a harder challenge with limited lives, continues and no saved progression – just the way we like it. Both Story and Arcade modes offer an easy (chill), hard (okay) and tough-as-nails (gnarly) difficulty levels, so it all depends on your mood and skill level.

If you need more convincing, then perhaps this game isn’t for you. If you are sitting on the fence, we say get off it and get playing TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge on your chosen system ASAP, you’ll thank us for it! Seriously though, if we had a rating system, we would give this all the stars in the observable universe. Bravo and thanks Tribute Games and DotEmu for giving us a superb game.

Review: Remote Life

June 1, 2022 By ausretrogamer

The first horizontal (or side scrolling for the retro crowd) shoot’em up that took the world by storm was Irem’s R-Type. There was also Konami’s Salamander (aka: Life Force) too, followed by the Thunder Force series on the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. These titles have become iconic in the shmup genre, so it is our privilege to announce that there is a new contender to be added to this illustrious list, Remote Life.

Just looking at the screenshots we have in this review, you’ll agree that Remote Life looks darn amazing. Coupled with the gorgeous visuals is a great soundtrack and sound effects, but most importantly, the action is top notch! With a myriad of weapons to pick up and cycle through, your ship can arm itself to the teeth to take care of enemies (and other obstructions) standing in your way. The game mechanic and control system is intuitive with modern controllers (moving, shooting, cycling weapons etc), making Remote Life an absolute blast (pun fully intended!) and fun shmup to play on your given system.

To think that this fabulous shooter was created by a single developer (Next Game Level), totally boggles the mind. It has a AAA look and feel, without the price, which is a massive win for us gamers. The inspiration of Remote Life may be old schools shoot’em ups, but it stands on its own, with its own unique shooter features.

Remote Life successfully merges the classic shoot’em up formula with its own new and unique improvements to differentiate itself from the crowd. One very cool feature is the 360 degree shooting, which is unusual for this genre, expanding the combat mechanic, while the presence of support machines such as allied automatic turrets or temporary drones, and even usable vehicles that drastically change how combat plays out, are welcome additions that modernise the shooter gameplay. The variety is another positive, with differing types of enemies – with new ones revealed in each level, and many unique and visually amazing mid and end-level bosses – each with their own attack patterns to keep you on your toes.

As mentioned, the weaponry is varied with new weapons introduced at each level, each requiring the player to pick up them up. The twist in the weaponry is the limited ammo, so you will have to be wise in what weapon to use on any given level. There are 16 missions which are quite varied, with some feeling more “open world” than others, so there is a ton of content to test your shoot’em up mettle!

If you have any interest in shooters/shoot’em ups, then we can’t recommend Remote Life enough – it is a visual, aural, brutal and fun extravaganza! This is one of the best shmups we have played in a long long while!

  • Game: Remote Life

FIFA Football Stays the Same

May 12, 2022 By David Cutler

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

Some video game franchises are so iconic, like the changing seasons, there will always be a new one. FIFA Soccer, or FIFA Football, depending on what country you’re in, is one of those franchises; but lately it feels like the popular game has become complacent and somewhat stale.

EA Sport’s FIFA Soccer 2006 is one of my favorite sports games. When it was released almost two decades ago; I couldn’t wait to get out of class and play a match, before I would work on my homework. On the weekends, I would play FIFA so much that I would lose track of time and realize it was suddenly Sunday. I found it difficult to put down my controller and turn off the addictive game.

The glorious EA Sports FIFA 2006!

FIFA 2006 doesn’t seem that much different than FIFA ’22. There haven’t been many radical changes to the franchise in years. Perhaps that’s why FIFA is the bestselling sports franchise, generating more than $20 billion in sales over the last twenty years. FIFA is such a popular game because gamers who love the franchise don’t particularly like big changes to the familiar gameplay and graphics. In all fairness, EA Sports’ Madden hasn’t changed that much in the last decade either.

The last EA Sports FIFA will be the ’23 edition

I like watching the PS4 Tournament Open Series. I get more enjoyment watching FIFA tournaments online than I do other EA Sports games on the market. Madden tournaments are fun to watch on television, but they’re on all the time. FIFA tournaments are less frequent, which makes them more entertaining and pleasurable when I happen to find one.

FIFA ’28 (or EA FC by then) will likely look a lot like FIFA ’22. The sports franchise is a gaming institution that’ll still be going strong decades from now. The players will change, but the game modes and graphics will not change dramatically.

It was recently announced that FIFA and EA Sports will end their successful partnership. The game will not change because of the breakup, most of the world’s popular clubs and players will still be playable because of separate licensing deals.

Slipstream: Retro Arcade Racer Review – Nintendo Switch

April 8, 2022 By ausretrogamer

With the Australian F1 GP being on this weekend, we’ve been playing Slipstream non-stop on our Switch for this last week, and we must say, this is the closest we’ll get to a modern OutRun, especially OutRun 2006/Coast 2 Coast (with a mix of F-Zero & Sonic The Hedgehog), with amazing drifting, slipstreaming and speed mechanics, complimented with a cool time rewind feature and a thumping synth pop soundtrack.

Slipstream has been a labour of love for Brazilian solo developer, Sandro Luiz de Paula (ansdor) since 2015. The love and attention to detail really stands out. Sandro’s Slipstream has pulled us right into one of our favourite arcade racer periods of the 80s and early 90s with gorgeous 2D sprite scaling and colourful pixel art graphics. This all amounts to an authentic retro experience on modern consoles with smooth and constant 60fps gameplay.

The entire package of Slipstream, from its graphics (with Pixelated, CRT and NTSC filters), speed and racing mechanics, awesome soundtracks to its six game modes, all combine to draw you into racing across a variety of twenty exotic locations from all around the world, including cities, deserts, forests, mountains and beaches. With a plethora of other retro inspired racers out there, Slipstream stands out with its speed, drifting, rewinding and slipstreaming mechanics, which add depth to the driving gameplay, resulting in a strategic, challenging and fun experience – what more could you ask for?! Oh yeah, it gets better, grab a few friends or family members and have yourself a local 4-player split-screen race.

The six game modes add longevity and variety for solo players, with different challenges. If you are time poor and need a quick fix of racing, then the single race or time trial modes are for you. If you have a bit more time on your hands, then the other modes (Grand Tour – just like in OutRun, Cannonball, Grand Prix and Battle Royale) provide ample challenges to test your racing skills. There are also some secrets to discover, which we won’t spoil for you here. Just like the arcade racers from yesteryear, Slipstream’s difficulty is dialled up, but luckily you don’t have to pump coins to continue enjoying the racing!

For under US$10/A$15, you get bang for your buck here, with an abundance of modes and amazing content. This all amounts to transporting gamers back three or so decades, when racing games were pure fun. The nostalgia that Slipstream induces is strong, so if you ever played and enjoyed racing games in the 80s and early 90s, then we highly recommend you add Slipstream to your games library!

Conducting Our Reconnaissance on the Recon 500 Gaming Headset and Recon Controller

November 23, 2021 By ausretrogamer

Objective reviews are always tough! What we love may be absolutely loathed by someone else. But, we are always up for a challenge, especially when it is to convince us that a set of products we’ve never used would blow our minds. This was the case with being urged to review the Turtle Beach Recon 500 headset and the Recon Controller on our Xbox Series S – let’s say that we didn’t need too much convincing to accept the challenge!

Now if you are not one for wired gaming peripherals, then you may want to stop reading here and go and play some video games. If you are intrigued and want to know our thoughts on the headset and controller, then read on!

Recon Controller (Wired) – Xbox (Series X|S & Xbox One) & PC (Win 10)

There is a lot to love about the Recon Controller. Firstly, it is versatile to be used on the latest Xbox consoles (Series X|S), Xbox One and also on any PC running Windows 10! The other very obvious one is the additional buttons and controls on the face that manage all of the audio controls – this was probably our favourite aspect of the controller, as we could easily mute/unmute ourselves instead of fiddling the same controls on our headset. The four EQ presets were also cool, which you can choose to suit your own aural tastes. The mic monitoring and control was a welcome feature, as we could manage and adjust our own voice for clear online chat comms.

From an ergonomic perspective, we actually preferred using the Recon Controller over the Series S pack-in controller – which we didn’t expect! The grips, which are purported to have micro-cooling channels and are a comfy shape to hold, did feel good in hand, especially when playing Forza Horizon 5 for a few hours. Even after a couple of hours, we didn’t suffer any sweaty hands or fatigue, which meant we could game longer without giving our poor hands a break. The analogue sticks were a tad clickier than the Xbox Series S controller, but that didn’t deter play and we got used to their smooth control pretty quickly. On the other hand, we immediately loved the D-pad on the Recon as it wasn’t as harsh with its clicking as the Xbox controller – it was way quieter,  meaning we can use it at night when the household is asleep.

The 3 metre (10 foot) cable is a nice length, but it depends how you have your gaming system setup – if you are sitting 4 metres away, then you may need to move your chair (or couch) a tad closer. Since our gaming chair is within a metre of our console, the cable didn’t really hamper our play. Another very welcome addition are the two (Pro-Aim) mappable quick action buttons underneath the controller. These buttons can be used to program your favourite functions, which you can also save up to four profiles.

The Recon Controller took us by surprise as it blew our expectations by a long long way. It is now our go to controller on the Xbox Series S. Having our Windows 10 laptop nearby, it is versatile to unplug from the Xbox and into our laptop to play on it. If you are in the market for another controller for your Xbox (Series X|S and XBOne) or PC, then you should seriously consider this one!

Recon Controller (Wired) by Turtle Beach retails for $99.95 on Amazon AU.

Recon 500 Multiplatform Gaming Headset – Xbox (Series X|S & Xbox One), PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch & PC

It is always welcome to have a gaming peripheral that can be used across multiple devices, and let’s face it, we all have a mix of gaming system, from green, blue to red!

We used the wired Recon 500 headset with our Recon Controller on the Xbox Series S and let’s just say, they go together like hand in glove. However, the strength of the Recon 500 being wired with a 3.5mm jack, is that it can be used on pretty much all modern day consoles and PCs. Since we had recently reviewed the EPOS H3 Hybrid headset, we could pit the Recon 500 against it and see which one we preferred.

The Turtle Beach over ear headsets we have previously tried, all seem to have large cups, which for us, is great. Perhaps the shape of our head and ears are perfectly suitable for this, as the cups sit nicely over the ear, meaning they are comfortable and you get the best audio blast from the larger cup. Pitting these against the EPOS H3 Hybrid, we found the Recon 500 to be a lot more comfortable on ear. The headband is nice and soft, ensuring the top of your head is well looked after, especially if you don’t have too much hair to provide cushioning!

The build quality is pretty good and durable for a $130.00 headset, but it does not compare to the higher quality of the EPOS H3 Hybrid, but then again, the EPOS headset is 120% more expensive – so don’t forget that. More importantly, how does it sound? Well, the patented 60mm Eclipse dual-drivers that separate the high and low frequencies gives you an immersive and ultra-detailed gaming audio – It’s like having a massive soundstage between your ears. As mentioned earlier, the precisely engineered earcups (injected with wood pulp composite) deliver rich and natural sounds that need to be heard to be believed. We keep going on about the earcups, but that is because they are supremely comy and suit our head and ears so well – they are amazing!

Coupled with the Recon Controller, we were able to use the EQ presets (on the controller) to change the sounds, which the headset happily obliged. We did find an EQ preset that we liked, so we stuck to it. Playing modern games with such personalised sounds is a great immersive experience. We also tried the headset on our Switch, and just like the Xbox Series S, the sounds were crystal clear and meaty for us to fully enjoy our gaming experience.

We aren’t eSports professionals, we found the TruSpeak removable, noise cancelling mic delivered reliable and super clear voices in online chats. Having a removable mic meant that we could also use the headset with out smartphone to listen to some tunes.

If you are in the market for a gaming headset that you can use on pretty much on all current gaming platforms, and you don’t want to spend more than $130.00, then we’d say you can’t go too wrong with the Turtle Beach Recon 500 (wired) headset.

Recon 500 Gaming Headset (Wired) by Turtle Beach retails for $129.95 on Amazon AU.

Madden NFL 22 and Real Life

September 9, 2021 By David Cutler

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

Before every NFL season begins, I like to play the full schedule of the reigning Super Bowl champion from the previous season. A few weeks ago, I played the Tampa Bay Buccaneers full 2021 season on Madden ’22 on my Xbox. My takeaway of how this season will go for Tom Brady and the Bucs is rather simple: They’re going to be very good. I only lost 3 games playing their ’21 schedule, but they were interesting losses.

Since I was a teenager, I’ve been playing a full season of Madden before the start of the NFL season. The teams that I lose to with the defending champions are usually the teams that the real squad end up losing to. It’s strange, but it’s the way it usually works out.

In my simulated, Xbox world, the Buccaneers lost an away game to the Washington Football Team by a field goal. Washington’s defense smothered any running attack by the Bucs, and Brady was on his back several times. They kept it close, and the Bucs failed to have the ball last; the way Brady and Bucs’ head coach Bruce Arians like it.

The Buccaneers offense is supposed to be phenomenal this season, but when I was in control of them, playing Madden, they had a ton of dropped balls and they couldn’t convert on 1st downs. My ’21 Bucs lost to the Colts, at Indianapolis, by 17 points. It was a blowout, and I couldn’t get my offense going. The short little passes that Brady is so good at were not connecting. All my receivers seemed covered on every passing play I’d select.

Playing the Buffalo Bills on Week 14 was difficult, but my Bucs won by a field goal. During that game, Brady had a last-minute drive that set up my kicker for the win. I lost to the Saints at Tampa Bay. None of my offensive players could hold on to the football in that rainy game. I like the elements in Madden, but not when they cost me a victory.

I’ll see if the Buccaneers will lose to Washington, the Colts, or the Saints this season. Some ESPN analysts are suggesting that the Bucs could go undefeated this season. My opinion: Not a chance. When you’re the defending champion, every opponent circles you on their schedule. Opposing teams will be ready.
