Guide: How To Softmod Your PS VITA

May 26, 2023 By ausretrogamer

This guide will provide you the steps to permanently mod your PS VITA (2000 Series models!) using the browser-based hack/jailbreadk. This mod is perfectly safe and allows you to run emulators, homebrew apps and load/play backups of your PS Vita, PSP and PS1 games. This mod will work on any PS Vita firmware version (up to and including v3.74).

As mentioned above, this guide is intended specifically for the PS Vita 2000 models, however, most steps can still be followed to mod your 1000 model. As for modding the PS TV, there are a number of differences in the process, therefore we recommend you to visit VitaHacks site for the specific guide.

OK, so you want to unleash your PS VITA, then follow along!

Before you begin, you’ll need the following items:

  • SD2Vita Pro – PS Vita Card Adapter (approx. AU$13); and
  • Samsung 256GB EVO Plus Micro SD (approx. AU$34)

NOTE: Prices are correct as at date of publication!

First thing – grab your fully charged PS Vita 2000, SD2Vita adapter and micro SD card!

Insert the micro SD card in the SD2VITA adapter

Check your system’s software (firmware) version to ensure you are at the latest version (3.74)

Connect your PS Vita to your local WiFi, and log into the PSN Store at least once before starting this mod!

Installing VitaDeploy and Henkaku is as easy as opening up the web browser app and navigate to jailbreak.psp2.dev

At the HENlo – a Playstation Vita Jailbreak site that appears, tap on “Unlock my Vita” and then “Unlock”

On the black screen menu, navigate to and select “Install henkaku” and press the X button. Once that is done, do the same for “Install VitaDeploy”. Once done, navigate down to “Exit and mount sd2vita to ux0” and press the X button

Don’t forget to insert the SD2Vita adapter (with the micro SD) into your PS Vita and ensure your device is connected to the internet before performing the next steps!

Open the Vita’s Settings app, and open “HENkaku settings”

Select “Enable Unsafe Homebrew” check-mark

Open the VitaDeploy app and navigate to “Install a different OS” -> “Quick 3.65 install”. The app will download and install v3.65. It will ask you if you really want to do it — just press X to confirm. Once complete, the Vita will reboot.

Open the Settings app and then go to System Information to confirm that you are now on v3.65 with the enso permanent hack

Now it’s time to setup the SD2Vita storage! Open VitaDeploy and navigate to Miscellaneous -> Format a storage device. Select “Format target storage” and follow any prompts. Reboot the device.

Open up your Settings app, then navigate to Devices -> Storage Devices, and enable YAMT. Reboot the console.

Open VitaDeploy -> File Manager, and make sure that the “uma0” partition is visible. Navigate to the “ux0” partition and select all of the folders except “SceloTrash” (use the SQUARE button to select). Press the TRIANGLE button and select “Copy”.

Navigate to the “uma0” partition, press TRIANGLE to bring up the menu, and select “Paste”.

Return to the Settings app and navigate to Devices > Storage Devices. Set the following options:
– ux0: SD2Vita
– uma0: Internal Storage

Reboot the Vita, then head to Settings -> System Information and the memory card size should now reflect the capacity of your microSD card (in our case, our micro SD’s capacity is 256GB)

Now to the business end of the mod – Installing the core homebrew apps!

Open the VitaDeploy app and naviate to App Downloader, and install the following apps:

– VitaShell – file management system
– VitaDB Downloader – Library tool to browse and download various apps and homebrew games
– Adrenaline – a PSP environment that allows you to play PSP and PS1 games with perfect performance
– PKGj – Powerful app that allows you to install backups of your PS Vita, PSP, and PS1 games
– Custom Themes Manager – as the name implies, this allows you to manage custom themes
– iTLS Enso – adds TSL v1.2 to the device, which fixes many plugin errors, adds more installer options, allows secure (https) internet access, and restores access to the PS Store
– Registry Editor – this allows you to improve the color saturation on the PS Vita 2000 models

Once all the apps have been downloaded and installed, exit the VitaDeploy app and reboot your Vita
NOTE: We installed additional apps, which aren’t mandatory

Now that your PS Vita 2000 has been jailbroken, feel free to explore and install custom themes (like we did – see below)

Once you have that cool custom theme, it’s time to check out the homebrew apps, emulators and homebrew games in VitaDB Downloader. Once done there, grab the backups of your favourite PS Vita, PSP and PS1 games via PKGj

We used the SwitchView UI frontend (from VitaDB Downloader) to make our Vita look like the Nintendo Switch!

Finally, time to enjoy and play some games on your freshly modded PS Vita! Bonsai!

Replikator – Twin Stick Roguelite Shooter Releases This Friday!

May 25, 2023 By ausretrogamer

Twin stick shooter ready to duplicate itself all over consoles this week

  • Price: $9.99 / €9.99
  • Release Date: 26th May 2023
  • Platforms: XB1, XBX/S, PS4/5 & Switch
  • Genre: Overhead shooter/Twin Stick Shooter

Indie publisher Ratalaika Games and Meridian4 join forces with Indie developer R_Games to announce the forthcoming release of Replikator, a challenging, eventful and addictive overhead shooter. Launching on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch on May 26th 2023, this roguelite presentation combines fast gameplay in an ongoing experience of discovering a mystery of a deadly saga of what occurred at a research complex.

Death Walks Beside you

Replikator offers shooter fans a sci-fi setting where gameplay centres around exploring the intricate labyrinths of space stations and fighting with hordes of enemies. Dozens of weapons and implants (passive skills) help the player but a sharp eye and evasive movement are also required to avoid hail of bullets and monsters that lurk. If the player’s character dies, then he will be reborn at the very beginning, but thanks to the resources found, he will be able to buy permanent improvements that will help him move forward in the next run.

Disaster Strikes

It appears that an accident occurred at the classified research complex, which led to the death of all personnel but all is not quite clear. A group of mercenaries led by the smuggler Khan will have to find out the reason for what happened.

To keep explosive action ‘unpredictably’ challenging, station mazes and items in them are generated procedurally, so each attempt is essentially unique. Gradually, the player will find blueprints of new items as well as finding entries from the crew of the complex which will reveal what happened here. At the same time, the player has the main goal – to get to the Replicator and defeat it.

Inside Information

  • Dynamic battles. You will have to constantly move and aim well to survive!
  • Danger at every turn. Many different enemies and traps will not let you get bored.
  • Dozens of upgrade items. Explore stations looking for new upgrades for your character.
  • Meta progression. In this game, each death will only make you stronger, because after death you will be able to buy permanent improvements for your character and the hub ship.
  • Procedural generation! The location of rooms, enemies and traps, as well as weapons and all items, are generated procedurally.
  • Space raccoon! and three more playable characters. All of them differ in starting characteristics, preferred weapons and special techniques.
  • Intriguing story. Explore the abandoned science complex and find out what happened here!

The player needs to complete 12 levels, including 5 bosses and as the player progresses the challenge becomes harder so many attempts may be required! Constant battles with ‘bosses’ with new attacks and moves as they become stronger will have to be faced! During the exploration of the stations, the player will find nanocubes that remain with him after death. They can be spent on the purchase of permanent improvements – for example, you can increase the maximum supply of ammunition or open access to a new workbench to improve weapons.

Replikator delivers masses of new content as the game progresses, and action is unashamedly fast, precise and deadly!. This twin stick shooter is red hot with hordes of crazy and blood thirsty enemies out to get you or one of the playable characters you select – of which there are 4! Top down action has never been so demanding, so can you win out?

‘The game is designed for one player. Approx 8-9 hours will be enough to defeat the last boss, however, it may take 30 or more hours to study all the content’ , R_Games.

Keep Moving, Shoot Straight… Survive!💀
Explore the complex & reveal what happened to its denizens!

XBHD – EON Gaming’s Revolutionary New Original Xbox Adapter

May 24, 2023 By ausretrogamer

XBHD, EON Gaming’s Revolutionary New Original Xbox Adapter Launches 20 June

World’s first plug-and-play HD adapter with multi-video output, built-in LAN party support, and more

EON Gaming, makers of the acclaimed GCHD MK-II, and Super 64, have revealed their next flagship adapter, this time for the original Xbox, called the XBHD. This full-featured, first-of-its-kind adapter unlocks the potential of the original Xbox for gamers worldwide on Tuesday, 20 June 2023 for $189.99 USD through Amazon as well as their worldwide retail partners including Castlemania Games, Retro Saga, and Games Connection.

The 2001 launch of the original Xbox sparked an unforgettable era. Microsoft entered the gaming console scene, going toe to toe with industry giants Sony and Nintendo in the 6th generation of consoles. Going on to sell more than 24 million units worldwide, Xbox offered greater processing power, internal storage, onboard LAN connectivity, and a host of exclusive titles such as the seminal Halo: Combat Evolved. Xbox was a force to be reckoned with and quickly moved from underdog to industry staple.

The XBHD pays tribute to these beloved titles with a robust set of features and the best video quality possible. Make use of dual HD video ports to host head-to-head matches or simplify streaming setups with no additional hardware or power required. Gather friends and recreate true LAN party experiences thanks to three RJ45 ethernet connectors, seamlessly enabling LAN support for up to four consoles.

Experience the original Xbox with perfectly translated visuals supporting 480i, 480p, 720p, and even 1080i resolutions. Additionally enjoy the flexibility of the MiniTOSlink 3.5mm port, providing clear audio through headphones, speaker systems, and even capture cards for streaming.

Key Features:

  • The XBHD is a plug-and-play HD adapter for the original Xbox
  • No mods required & no external power required
  • Provides the best visual signal possible on original hardware
    • Losslessly translates the component video to HD
    • 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i compatible (NTSC resolution settings required)
  • Lagless input – controller inputs appear on screen instantly
  • 2 HD video out ports for simultaneous video streaming (noiseless dual HD video output)
  • 3.5mm MiniTOSLINK jack (audio output)
  • 3 Ethernet ports for simplified LAN experience
  • Custom designed plug that matches original Xbox aesthetic

“The Xbox was home to the LAN party.” said Justin Scerbo co-founder of EON Gaming. “The magic of linking consoles together to enjoy an expanded, connected local gaming experience was something that defined us then, and something we long for now. With XBHD, we wanted to bring that possibility back. Now, it’s easier than ever, and these classic games have never looked better.”

“I remember packing up my Xbox, 4 controllers, the cables, and an old, hefty tube TV into my small Miata, driving down to my friends house, and having a Halo party that felt like it lasted for days,” said Justin Chou, co-founder, EON Gaming. “Now-a-days, although everything’s become easier with the use of online matchmaking lobbies, I can’t help but feel like I’ve lost something magical. I miss sharing a living room with my closest friends and playing games all night.”

The XBHD launches worldwide on Tuesday, 20 June 2023 and retails for $189.99 USD (approx. AU$290.00) via Castlemania Games, Retro Saga, Games Connection, and Amazon, shipping worldwide.

Atari x Artovision: 3D Collectible Artwork

May 12, 2023 By ausretrogamer

The new Atari is like a slow moving train-wreck that you can’t keep your eyes off!

We keep on their backs as it seems that they squeeze every single ounce of their IP, but some of the stuff they have come up with lately (like the shadowbox art!) isn’t too bad if we are to be honest – check it out here.

According to Atari:

These beautiful artwork features imagery from beloved games like Adventure and Asteroids. Each of these pieces appear with three-dimensional depth and rich full color prints. Available as a Shadowbox or Desktop variant

We Need a Good ‘Hitman’ Movie

April 26, 2023 By David Cutler

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” breaking records at the global box office, it makes me wonder why it took Hollywood so long to produce such a successful film based on a video game property. There have been other films based on video games that have made money (“Sonic the Hedgehog” and its sequel), but nothing like the grosses of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” It’ll easily pass the $1 billion mark worldwide.

I caught the “Hitman” films on cable recently, and as someone who loves the games, one thought raced through my mind: How did they screw this up? The 2007 “Hitman” film, starring Timothy Olyphant as the assassin, had no redeemable value whatsoever…it’s a violent mess that gets mindbogglingly boring by the third act. And the villains were cartoons. When I saw it in the movie theater, I was peering at my watch, waiting for the credits to roll. Olyphant is an immensely talented actor; he couldn’t even save the film.

The 2007 Hitman film starring Timothy Olyphant was a violent mess

The “Hitman” world from the games is so rich and sprawling. Producers and Hollywood executives had enough material from the iconic game for five movies. Or they could’ve taken all the great parts of the games and put them in one film.

When I heard the news that Rupert Friend was set to star in “Hitman: Agent 47,” I had hoped that the film could be exceptional. I was a fan of Rupert Friend’s performance on the Showtime series “Homeland.” He was terrific as CIA operative Peter Quinn. The British actor was miscast as the assassin. I remember being confused by the muddled opening credits that had clips that were more interesting than most of the action sequences in the film. It didn’t help that every actor and actress in the movie seemed extremely wooden.

“Hitman 2: Silent Assassin” is one of my favorite video games. The IO Interactive developed, stealth video game had the best storyline of any “Hitman.” Back in the early 2000s, I played “Silent Assassin” on my GameCube. The story of Codename 47 who comes out of retirement when his friend, Reverend Emilio Vittorio, is kidnapped by unknown assailants, could make a great plot for a “Hitman” film. It’s not an origin story, but it could be an excellent spine for a screenplay. 47 resumes work for the ICA in hopes of finding his close friend.

I doubt a studio will finance another “Hitman” film after the dismal box office returns of the previous two. However, the “Hitman” games are so iconic, there must be a filmmaker who can put their own imaginative spin on the vast property.

Taycan PONG Arcade Battle: Porsche X Atari

April 4, 2023 By ausretrogamer

Ready, Player One? Porsche Taycan Arcade Is Here!

Now here is a collaboration we never saw coming – Porsche and Atari! Say what?!

Porsche Cars Australia recently released a campaign featuring two Porsche Taycan electric sportscars playing an intense, high-speed, real-life version of Pong. In this life-sized adaptation of the 1970’s Atari classic, the paddles are two Porsche Taycan sportscars while the ball is a fast moving high-tech drone.

Along with the video, Porsche Cars Australia have also created Taycan Arcade, an interactive web-based game inspired by Pong. Players can use their keyboard or mobile device to move their Taycan up and down on their side of the screen trying to deflect a fast moving ball towards their opponent. Get the ball past your opponents Taycan, and players score a point.

Porsche fans and PONG video game lovers can play Taycan Arcade here.

Jirard Bought EVERY Nintendo Wii U & 3DS Game Before the Nintendo eShop Closes

March 23, 2023 By ausretrogamer

Jirard “The Completionist” Khalil has spent a smidgen under US$23,000 (~ AU$34,300) buying EVERY available Wii U and 3DS game before Nintendo shutters these respective eShops at the end of this month (March 2023).

This is definitely one way to preserve games, but let’s face it, we don’t all have tens of thousands of extra dollars sitting around, waiting to be used to buy up every game for these now deprecated Nintendo systems. We can’t even imagine the storage required to save and store all of these games – that’s a lot of microSD cards and solid-state drives!

Jirard should be commended, as he could have easily chosen the dark path, piracy, to achieve a similar result.

Completionist by name, completionist by nature, we salute you Jirard!

PS: When you are done watching the vid, read Kelsey Lewin’s Twitter thread on how this could solve the whole “preservation of games” puzzle.

My ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Weekend

March 9, 2023 By David Cutler

By: D.C. Cutler, U.S.A.

Here is a little secret about entertainment: if something is good, people are usually going to find it and make it a success.

I’ve stayed away from buying a “Sonic the Hedgehog” game for all my life, but one recent weekend, I decided to purchase “Sonic Forces” and “Sonic Mania” for Nintendo Switch.

I’ve always played “Sonic” in a friend’s dorm room or at an arcade when I was younger, but I never bought a “Sonic” game; and I had a Sega when I was a teenager. All weekend long, I went back-and-forth playing the two Sonic games. I played “Sonic Mania” a little more because I like the retro look and feel to it.

The main thing that I’ve always enjoyed about “Sonic” games is the speed. I’m not the greatest at collecting tokens, however, I’ll get through each stage in a speedy fashion. When I land on some spikes and lose all my tokens, I’m never fazed by it. My focus is always trying to get to the end of the stage. I’m always trying to break my previous record; my time is my focus.

Before buying the games, my last interaction with “Sonic the Hedgehog” was the first film, back in 2020. I tried watching “Sonic the Hedgehog” with Jim Carrey; I got about an hour in, and said to myself, “This movie wasn’t made for me.” I hear kids love the film franchise. Worldwide, both films made $725 million combined. A third film is in the works for 2024.

When I went into my Sonic cave for the weekend, I couldn’t stop playing, I was enjoying myself so much. Yes, the game is hugely popular and iconic, but the game play, like the original “Super Mario Bros.,” is still thrilling and engaging.

And, like “Mario,” there are many iterations of “Sonic” to come. In the future, I may buy a third “Sonic” game.

This Is The Way: Microsoft & Lucasfilm Launch ‘The Mandalorian’ themed Xbox Gaming Gear

March 6, 2023 By ausretrogamer

This Is The Way

Celebrating the start of The Mandalorian season 3 on Disney+, Microsoft/Xbox and Lucasfilm have teamed up to launch ‘The Mandalorian’-themed gaming gear, including cool Xbox Series X|S Mando livery!

The third season of The Mandalorian follows Grogu as he reunites with Din Djarin, so what better way to celebrate this much-loved Star Wars series than to have a colour-coordinated controller, a hoodie and best of all, a human-sized armoured floating pram (Pram XL), which doesn’t really float, but would still be cool to win.

The comp/sweepstajes for The Mando-themed Xbox Series X|S is open to everyone on the planet, with the only entry requirement being a retweet of this tweet!

PS: For more news and how to enter the sweepstakes to win the Pram XL, head over to the Xbox News site right now.
