A 1972 Magnavox Odyssey Promo: I Like Them Cheesy

January 2, 2015 By ausretrogamer

magnavoxPrior to super-slick marketing videos, there was cheesy (and endearing) promotional films, just like this rare 1972 footage telling you all about the ground breaking Magnavox Odyssey video game system – the electronic game of the future!

Since there was no YouTube back then, this super-8 film was distributed to TV dealers in the very obscure Magi-Cartridge film-loop format, which could be viewed on special display devices in the dealer showroom. Would this video have got your attention? I know this promo would have sucked me in to getting Mr. Baer’s Odyssey, but that’s because I like my promotional videos to be big and cheesy.

1-SuFami

2-SuFamiThere aren’t too many stores you can walk into and find whole cabinets full of 20+ year-old video games for sale. It’s fun to search through second hand stores and op shops to find hidden treasures, but if you want a guaranteed treasure trove of retro gaming goodies, then you better hit your local Cash Converters store.

3-Gameboy

4-Gameboy

5-GameCubeThe variation of retro gaming items you find in a Cash Converters store creates a lot of excitement and sets the nostalgic juices flowing. While you have made a bee-line towards that old Atari 2600 game that has taken your fancy, another one, a Sega Master System case, catches your attention to the left of it. This kind of a visual sensory overload is quite welcome when you are on the hunt.

7-AtariSMS

8-MonkeyIslandAs you allow the nostalgia to wash over you, you realise that you need to take a step back and take your time to take it all in – from that Atari CX-40 controller and Nintendo 64 console, to those Game Boy games tucked away behind the bigger cartridges, you want to make sure you don’t miss a thing!

9-SNES_various

10-SNESChatting to the staff about classic video games, you sense their enthusiasm of the products and the memories they bring back for them. I tell you, that nostalgic feeling is super addictive. We were deep in conversation about Super Mario and Game & Watch games with one of the staff members, when one of their colleagues enthusiastically produced a few choice Japanese GameCube titles that had arrived earlier that day. Talk about great timing – our retro gaming senses were now well and truly hitting overdrive!

11-Atari

12-AtariCX40The thrill of hunting old video gaming items you cherished from the 70s, 80s or 90s does become addictive. Luckily, there are Cash Converters stores nearby to provide you your much needed retro gaming fix. For those that are comfortable shopping from the comfort of their own home, don’t fret, the Cash Converters Webshop is full of items to browse and provide you with that nostalgic fix all from the comfort of your armchair.

14-N64With our Christmas shopping all done and our wish list completed, we’ll put out the milk and biscuits for Santa, hoping that he will reward us for being good for another year. Have a retro gaming and safe Christmas!

Retro Games with Modern Themes: Retro Games and Movies Mashup

September 29, 2014 By ausretrogamer

As featured in the French art book, Geek-Art: An Anthology: Art, Design, Illustration & Pop Culture, we have found these very cool illustrations of fictional classic video game boxes adapted for films and TV shows.

We love the hand-written notes on the packaging – a very nice touch. With so much awesomeness to look at, we can’t pick a favourite. Can you?

MVGS3: Use Your Retro Gaming Controllers On Your Smartphone or Tablet

July 27, 2014 By ausretrogamer

1-Mvgs3-AusretrogamerAttention retro gamers! Do not throw out your much loved old joysticks (or gamepads)!

Patrice Daubaire’s new invention, the MVGS3 (Multi Video Games System Three), allows up to 95 different retro gaming controllers to be used to navigate and also play games on your new smartphone and tablet! With the patent still pending, let’s all hope this awesome creation gets a commercial release soon (Ed: Perhaps Kickstarter could help?)

Just in case you were not aware of Patrice’s inventing pedigree, his previous creation, the MVGS2-Dream-Station made jaws drop all around the world a year ago (Ed: I am still picking up mine off the floor.)!

We will be keeping a close eye on this one and will hopefully be getting our grubby mits on it very soon!

Make-A-Wish and Lenovo Power Up Mobile Retro Games Arcade

June 27, 2014 By ausretrogamer

Lenovo_MAW_retroarcade_truck_kids

This is truly heart warming – Lenovo and Make-A-Wish (MAW) Foundation Australia came together to build a mobile retro gaming arcade as part of a campaign to bring joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions.

The mobile arcade, containing arcade cabinets loaded on a truck, was parked at The Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park (NSW) on June 21st. It was open to MAW-supported kids (and their parents) as well as the general public in a bid to raise awareness for the MAW Foundation and what they do for children with life-threatening conditions.

Lenovo_MAW_retroarcades

The games in the mobile retro arcade truck were selected so that parents could also reminisce on some of the old classics (including Street Fighter II, Metal Slug, Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, Galaga, Donkey Kong, and Space Invaders, to name a few) with their kids.

As a memento of the event, all MAW-supported kids attending the event received a Lenovo Yoga Tablet. Well done Lenovo and MAW Foundation for putting smiles on kids faces. A great day out for all!

The Thrill Of The Chase: Gone Hunting

June 23, 2014 By ausretrogamer

There was only one thing to do on a cold and miserable Sunday – go hunting! No guns or ammunition were required for this hunting trip. We armed ourselves with warm clothing and a keen eye to find some retro gaming gear and other vintage items.

Once the target was found, we went in to prowl. It was clear from the outset that this hunting trip was not going to disappoint. Once we got past the usual household kitsch items, we found precious arcade machines from the 1970s, lots of comics, vinyl records and a number of classic video gaming systems and games.

The selection of retro gaming systems and games did get the nostalgic nerve quite excited. There was no way we were going to leave empty handed on this hunt. Sorry wallet.

Didn’t know where to focus on this collection of action figures. Daytona USA lurked in the background

Blast From the Past: Nintendo Interactive Store Displays

June 10, 2014 By ausretrogamer

Nintendo_Retail_Title

Ah, the Nintendo of old. How I miss thee, when times were simpler and there was no Microsoft nor Sony. There is always room in my heart for Nintendo, as they have endured through thick and thin in this video gaming business that is now on par with Hollywood.

So let’s take a trip down memory lane, some 22 years ago and see how Nintendo presented their wares to the retail fraternity. Golly gosh those interactive display units were awesome!
