MVGS3: Use Your Retro Gaming Controllers On Your Smartphone or Tablet

27/07/2014 By ausretrogamer

1-Mvgs3-AusretrogamerAttention retro gamers! Do not throw out your much loved old joysticks (or gamepads)!

Patrice Daubaire’s new invention, the MVGS3 (Multi Video Games System Three), allows up to 95 different retro gaming controllers to be used to navigate and also play games on your new smartphone and tablet! With the patent still pending, let’s all hope this awesome creation gets a commercial release soon (Ed: Perhaps Kickstarter could help?)

Just in case you were not aware of Patrice’s inventing pedigree, his previous creation, the MVGS2-Dream-Station made jaws drop all around the world a year ago (Ed: I am still picking up mine off the floor.)!

We will be keeping a close eye on this one and will hopefully be getting our grubby mits on it very soon!

Make-A-Wish and Lenovo Power Up Mobile Retro Games Arcade

27/06/2014 By ausretrogamer

Lenovo_MAW_retroarcade_truck_kids

This is truly heart warming – Lenovo and Make-A-Wish (MAW) Foundation Australia came together to build a mobile retro gaming arcade as part of a campaign to bring joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions.

The mobile arcade, containing arcade cabinets loaded on a truck, was parked at The Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park (NSW) on June 21st. It was open to MAW-supported kids (and their parents) as well as the general public in a bid to raise awareness for the MAW Foundation and what they do for children with life-threatening conditions.

The games in the mobile retro arcade truck were selected so that parents could also reminisce on some of the old classics (including Street Fighter II, Metal Slug, Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, Galaga, Donkey Kong, and Space Invaders, to name a few) with their kids.

As a memento of the event, all MAW-supported kids attending the event received a Lenovo Yoga Tablet. Well done Lenovo and MAW Foundation for putting smiles on kids faces. A great day out for all!

The Thrill Of The Chase: Gone Hunting

23/06/2014 By ausretrogamer

There was only one thing to do on a cold and miserable Sunday – go hunting! No guns or ammunition were required for this hunting trip. We armed ourselves with warm clothing and a keen eye to find some retro gaming gear and other vintage items.

Once the target was found, we went in to prowl. It was clear from the outset that this hunting trip was not going to disappoint. Once we got past the usual household kitsch items, we found precious arcade machines from the 1970s, lots of comics, vinyl records and a number of classic video gaming systems and games.

The selection of retro gaming systems and games did get the nostalgic nerve quite excited. There was no way we were going to leave empty handed on this hunt. Sorry wallet.

Didn’t know where to focus on this collection of action figures. Daytona USA lurked in the background

Blast From the Past: Nintendo Interactive Store Displays

10/06/2014 By ausretrogamer

Nintendo_Retail_Title

Ah, the Nintendo of old. How I miss thee, when times were simpler and there was no Microsoft nor Sony. There is always room in my heart for Nintendo, as they have endured through thick and thin in this video gaming business that is now on par with Hollywood.

So let’s take a trip down memory lane, some 22 years ago and see how Nintendo presented their wares to the retail fraternity. Golly gosh those interactive display units were awesome!

Atari: 42 Years Of Fun

09/06/2014 By ausretrogamer

Atari_42

Atari. Can you believe that they have been rocking our video gaming world in one shape or another since 1972! The video gaming industry would never be the same once Atari entered the fray some 42 years ago. Nolan and Ted’s little enterprise baby grew into an arcade and home gaming entertainment Goliath.

Much has been written (and rewritten) about the history of Atari, but rather than recite every sordid detail, just gaze upon this Atari timeline. A lot has happened since June 1972!

The Thrill Of The Chase: A Saucy Red

06/06/2014 By ausretrogamer

NG_trailer

There is something about the colour red. It invokes very raw emotions. As other thrill of the chase have come and gone, this latest chase was quite special. On one hand, I had found the exact Neo Geo MVS cabinet I had been lusting after (Ed: red = lust), and more importantly, I had my mum and dad in tow while I was criss-crossing the suburbs of Melbourne to pickup this red beauty.

NG_pride_of_place

The sun was searing, I was sweaty as hell and upon arrival, the seller was nowhere to be found! Alas, one phone call later, and things were sorted – the seller had gone out to the shops. The 4-slot MVS cabinet was easy to manoeuvre and get onto the trailer. I would have to say, it was the easiest cabinet I had transported.  The saucy red is now sitting pride of place in the yet-to-be-transformed-into-a-games-room garage (more on that another time). Let me just say, anyone that plays on her, they are instantly smitten.

NG_internals

This chase was personal for me. Not only did my parents provide me with company, they provided memories, not just for being there on this occasion, but on plenty other countless occasions. My parents aren’t young like they used to be, so any occasion where I can spend time with them to create a memory, I cherish it. This chase is dedicated to you, mum and dad.

Now let’s play some NAM-1975!

Retro Gaming: Home Redecorating

22/05/2014 By ausretrogamer

Do you think your hobby can be all consuming? Take retro gaming for instance – if you deck out your home furnishings with your favourite video game, is that going too far or not far enough?

Looking at some of the below items, I reckon I could go crazy redecorating our house. Perhaps I draw the line at putting Super Mario on the toilet seat. How far would you go?

Retro Gaming Wall Art For Your Home

11/05/2014 By ausretrogamer

If seeing arcade, Commodore 64, and console retro game classics like Frogger, Asteroids, Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. immediately bring you back to great times, then wall art would really rock for incorporating those gaming themes into a modern home.

People often ask me about the best way to incorporate retro gaming art for kids’ rooms, so I thought it’d be great to provide a few of the sources that I’ve come across.

Do It Yourself
The first and obvious option is the do-it-yourself route which includes;

  • Getting a friend with access to a vinyl cutter to cut out designs;
  • Putting together your favourite retro artwork on Zazzle; or
  • Printing out designs on transparencies.

Let’s face it, making your own ‘classic’ design may not always really be, classic.

Decals or paint?
Back in the day, I knew a great guy who would airbrush some fine art on whatever you gave him; doors, walls, cupboards, or even clothing. However, if you’re not ready to pay high rates for such masterpieces, or want to be able to upgrade the kids’ rooms when they eventually tire of your endless ranting about your childhood fascination with Yie Ar Kung Fu, decals are probably a more cost-effective, and easily-modified solution. This is especially true if you just happen to have bought 20 arcade cabinets while renting a place.

Something that occurred to me after putting up my retro gaming wall art, is that it would have been awesome to plan out a history series, starting with say Pong, and progressing through to later games. Luckily, they are re-usable, so this may some day become a reality for me.

Wall decal suppliers
You may or may not remember the Space Invaders decals on the set of the TV show, The IT Crowd. I certainly did, and eventually found that these were available from online stores such as Blik, Wallstickershop, and Amazon. These are mostly purposely pixel-styled images, which are accurate and licensed.

A number of people online have mentioned Blik, who seem to have varied their range over the years, but still have a nice selection of the classics:

Wallstickershop also have some licensed designs, but also offer the non-pixelart versions; which can sometimes work well, especially if your place is on the cozy side where you’ll view them from a closer distance:

As most retro gamers are keen to find those elusive items that aren’t immediately obvious, I also managed to dig up a few more:

Finally, here’s one that seems to be no longer available, but looks fantastic and hopefully will become available again at some stage:

As usual, make sure you get permission from your family before embarking on redecorating your walls.

Retro Nostalgia and Collectables Fair

09/05/2014 By ausretrogamer

ARG_Fair_4

On this past rainy and cold Sunday there was some nostalgic warmness emanating  from the Flemington Racecourse. This hallowed turf, usually reserved for the sport of kings, was transformed into a nostalgists haven – the Retro Nostalgia and Collectables Fair.

ARG_Fair_7

The Fair had everything from football cards to video games and lots of Star Wars memorabilia – perfect timing with the ‘May The 4th Be With You’ Star Wars celebration day. With a $5 entry fee (for adults), you were greeted with tables full of the happy stuff – items from a bygone era, an era that gave us lots of happy memories. The stall holders were open to discussion about their items and collecting in general. Their enthusiasm was genuine and infectious. There was the usual haggling on price, but that is your god given right to do at such gatherings.

The Fair atmosphere was pleasant and the crowd numbers were just about right – there was no pushing or shoving. Luckily the Fair was held indoors, as Melbourne turned on its charm with some typical crap weather! Bring on the next Retro Nostalgia and Collectables Fair!
